But neither is sneaking up on someone and slitting their throat badass. Yet ninjas did it all the time. The blackjack makes less noise and less of a mess. But the REAL joy of thief is simply sneaking past everyone like a ghost... THAT is what makes Garrett badass, his ability to remain UTTERLY undetectable. That's what the game was designed for. If your average ninja went around and got tagged by 3 samurai, he'd be dead too.

The mechanics are there - the guards attack at normal speed and if you have a good eye you can block and then counterattack. If you want to go cool, then the game DOES give you the option of going round butchering every living thing. I certainly cleared levels that way.

Half-baked reasons sadly. As someone already pointed out, he lives in a small flat in a Medieval/Victorian apartment building, so he's not rich; good reasons are that he's stern and overflows with confidence, he's "bad" and a rebel, his voice (which is a bit of a no brainer), he's charismatic and I'm sure a woman's mind goes wild when thinking about the capabilities of those thief's hands.
@MedlarGW He has a lot of money, he just needs to keep a low profile. I think his plan is to eventually go straight and retire but he needs even more money to pay people off in order to do this and he keeps getting sucked into plots to destroy the world because of all the awkward jobs he's called to do.
I suspect he has that sort of intention too. But I don't think he really has that much money. His little apartment isn't stocked with anything even remotely valuable, there's no safe or hiding place where we find the occassional bit of loot he's stashed... I don't think he wants the money really, it's safe to say he probably steals for the challenge and the rush.

I played all 3 series. it is all about shadows I love the creepy atmosphere and you control him to run/walk/creep and sneak ..all this + his sexy voice.

In Theif 2 in the 6th or 7th (forgot) misson, Garrett is about to be arrested by the city but he escapes. Later on you hear 2 women talking about how quick cool and swift he was and how impressed they were.

Heheh, and on, and on, and on... there are a lot more female gamers out there than most people would guess, but some use a gender-neutral name to avoid being hit on or insulted by sexists who think gaming has to be a boys' club. Fortunately, more girls these days are learning that there are mature guys who play games, too.

I like this. To be honest, I think everyone, young, old, male or female is missing out if they don't play games, but unfortunately I think alot dismiss it. In the same way it makes me sad to think there are people missing out because they refuse to read books, it makes me sad when people dismiss gaming as something childish and only for male adolescents, because good games (Such as Thief or Deus Ex) are as artistic bits of storytelling as any film or book .
Anyway I'm just rambling now ^^

I'm sure I am quite stealthy. I sometimes use a blackjack (no jokes about that please). I don't normally have the sexy voice, but I can do it. I'm not much of a thief, but I can be quite sarcastic and mostly and above all... I have a fake eye (actually two, they're called glasses)

You must not be aware of TTLG, sister forum to Eidos, there is a huge fan community for Thief, system shock and other games. Lots of women play Thief, myself included. I've been playing Thief since the beginning, and I'm heavily involved in the community as well as helping with Fan missions, and helping on the dark mod.

I think 1. it´s because of the mystery and 2. because it plays in the middle age. The same reason girls play games like Final Fantasy or similar a lot. Even if Batman comes out at night he´s too "modern" :-)
