Some violin concertos are airy fairy pretty, many are attractively deep, few, besides Bach's amazing double concerto - a dose of upliftment - are as sweet and disturbing as Beethoven's only violin concerto. Thus, for me, this is the yardstick against which all are measured. Few encompass the empathy, sympathy and depth; the pain and panacea; the emptiness and the rich tapestry of complex emotions... the fullness of brilliant and sensitive mastery - but everyone who loves B's music knows that;)
