Both Solid Baby and Thinc Zinc shouldv'e been hit singles, i also like Calling All Destroyers from this period as well. He missed Visconti's production, but the songs were still good. Marc Bolan was a rock n roller, 1974 and 75 saw him desperately trying to crack America and pandering to a US audience that simply wasn't interested in a second wave of British Pop. It was their loss, Bolan returned to the UK, gave us Dandy and was ready to work with Visconti again. 1978 would've been big 4 him.
@MottTheWot Agree with you on all fronts here. I think a pairing of Chrome Sitar with Calling All Destroyers for Futuristic Dragon would have been brilliant.
It really doesnt matter if you lived through it, music is music. if you dont like it, you dont have to shout it out to everyone in the world. Marc Bolan is known for his musical genius just because someone doesnt like this or that doesnt mean its not genius.
When I first heard the Zipgun album disater, this is one of the songs that was not totally repulsive, in spite of my distain for Gloria's constant overdoing it on the "backing vocals" or whatever you want to call them. And if that if I hear cosmic soul one more time I will scream. In the past Marc used additonal vocals when needed, with Gloria around all of the sudden them became a MUST on every song. That became annoying quickly.
you actually insult Bolan's memory with your pathetic adolescent comments about Gloria Jones. By this time Bolan was writer, composer, producer etc do you think Marc didn't have control over what was happening?
Friend, I do not know if you were around when this album came out, but I was and millions of us were expecting something to compete with Electric Warrior or Slider. We got this.
Trust me and realize that at the time it was a mix of shock, disbelief & frustration. We were going...what??? And no one was thinking cosmic anything. We were bummed out.
Why were you expecting Electric Warrior or Slider?, you already had Tanx and Zinc?? Why didn't u move on... if u were that upset about the quality and direction of Zipgun? Bolan was no longering delivering what u wanted so move on. Bowie? Queen? Whatever... move on.
You can like Gloria's music, I don't mind some of her stuff for what it is. It just did not & does not mix well with Marc Bolan's/T-Rex's music for me and a few million other people. Tony V was out of the picture & Bill Legend went by the wayside eventually. Of course, Marc has creative licence on his music. If you truly think Gloria made his music "better", that would surprise me. We both know what we know from what we read and hear with our ears. He was helping her do her own stuff at the end.
why do you insist on coming on,and giving us all a "lesson" on music?? If your gonna slag his music off, write it on your fucking bedroom wall instead of on here, people wanna applaud his work on here, not piss and moan, so go back to your "musically knowledgeable" hole and leave us alone.
I am not giving you a lesson, I am commenting on my actual experience of hearing the album, when it actually came out at the time. This may not aliegn with your "18 year old" ideas or experiences. IF you may make it out of your teens alive, even with your attitude, you may realize your opinion is worth more if you speak without f-bombs and other cuss words.
Come on give the 'young' guy a break. I remember when the album came out...I had ordered it weeks in advance and I loved it (aged17). I thought Bolan had lost a lot of his 'poetry' and was struggling lyrically but musically he was well ahead of the game with his 'pop -soul' sound and the album was much under-rated.
I sort of agree with you there. I don't know if 'overdoing' is the right choice of word though. I think the problem lies in the fact that Gloria Jones is just not a 'background' singer. She's an up-the-front singer in her own right with a powerful voice. I find her singing detracts from Bolan's own vocals and has me skipping particular songs on listening, because I don't like the way she drowns him out. But ... in her defence I do have to add her version of 'Tainted Love' is by far the best.
@dreamklf -- What you are saying is represented by thousands of T-Rex fans who dropped off. Add to that the thousands who he did not gain. Gloria was a cancer to his career, without a doubt. And as for being a good singer. I do not enjoy off keey singing. I saw Bolan live with Gloria and she was a train wreck...
Thank you Honey, can't believe it that I have been playing this all week in my car and today. Went to the tree only this week and as i drove off blasted out this song. I love it one of my fav bolan songs
