  • WOw That is most be some rare footage of Master Shinjo. I have enjoyed reading your copy of BUBISHI and keep close by always in case my Sensei has a quiz or ask a question/subject from your book!

  • Hi Jim san,

  • Great Performance of a Master Kata.

Youngsters should perceive many of the hidden techniques within the Kata. Prime example is the emphasis on the Stomp to the body just thrown, not the double punch strike.

Excellent. I loved his performance of the little known Advanced Kata Ryuko

  • @IOGKFmadrid Check Glimmerman108. I believe that they are posted there

  • Truly inspiring!

  • Shinjo Sensei = Badass!

  • Thanks Sensei McCarthy lots of amazing applications and from a master you spoil us thanks again.

  • OH MAN! Everyone knows my favourite Goju-Ryu Master of all time. THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! AND please...if you got anymore, PM Sensei...indulge me?

  • I notice that all of his kata he kicks by pushing the heel into the target rather than the ball of the foot many use today.

  • This is how Toguchi Seikichi did it. Considering Shinjo was his student at one time, this may have been where he picked it up.

  • That's what I prefer doing when throwing a front kick, I always push with the heel. Originally I've been taught to kick with the ball of the foot, but I don't find it that effective and I'm more likely going to jam my toes while sparring.

  • i agree. I also feel like i have more power, like a thrust kick rather than a front snap kick.

I found also that he didnt use a lot of muchimi or hip movement, but that could be just the way he was taught.

  • Yes, same for many of the other kata in Shobukan.

My understanding is that was pre WWII way of kicking in goju.

When you see all the application variations off the heel kick, you can understand why he preferred kicking that way.

  • that is call kakato mae geri. I never thought of it as pre-WWII, but just as kakato mae geri.

  • Nice video, thank you for sharing this amazing pice of footage, McCarthy Sensei.

  • Wonderful. Thank you for sharing.

  • Thank you for sharing
