  • what lame 11 people dislike this!

  • Fish into Cardboard is not a closed loop.

  • I'm studying chemistry and THIS is the reason why

  • Please dont only focus on solar power

    Nuclear is the way

  • i have so much respect to architects who work with nature. Green architecture for building sustainability...very informative video. thank you.

  • one of the best vids on youtube for sure.

  • Inspiring and worth watching for. Thanks for having this video clip posted.

  • Inspiring!

  • Does anyone know where that animation of earth's photosynthetic activity came from? Is it available somewhere?

  • Comment removed

  • Fascinating info here. Sad though that hundreds of thousands to millions of people watch the garbage that is on YouTube and so relatively few are seeing this. Share this with your peeps. Get the word out as far as you can.

  • PLEASE, you lost me with use of Arabian Gulf, I love you ideas, but why do you destroy the name Persian Gulf?

  • @faab99 the gulf is Arabian you stinking persian

  • @hmoodali2 Really? And the Gulf of Mexico is the Gulf of Texas you morons?

  • Architecture would be a whole new thing if every thought about it like he does!

  • Eloquent, direct to the point, simple yet fool of wisdom, the guy is spectacular and thanks so much for mentioning my Country Bolivia with such a great connotation, because is humiliating and unfair that my Country is referenced only as fine cocaine producer, my Country is a normal one.

  • If only our government had a closed loop model.

  • Excellent, best yet! Realize a reason this type of innovation is not explored is due to a global economic system based upon consumption driving profit margins. Corporate controlled government want to continue their hegemony via margin maximization and control over the economy and political control models are based upon tax revenues. If existing consumptive based models diminish due to innovative efficiency they would lose their hegemony. The failure to adopt is an economic command control issue.

  • loooooooovvve it

  • Truly brilliant. Would be good if people actually took such action...

  • Check out GENI. Global Energy Network Institute. Practical application of optimizing efficiency. Awesome lecture.

  • One of the best TED talks that I have seen. This stuff is the future. For anybody that is interested in this kind of thing, look into permaculture

  • @NerdFangs You can find good starting info on wikipedia, along with videos on youtube

  • I like how he's talking about being humble and obtaining wisdom from nature.

  • This talk almost gave me hope in humanity. Quite an achievement. Thanks! Also, I am fully appreciating the irony that after all of our "progress", we find ourselves going back to nature for lessons in living intelligently and sustainably.

  • Now, this guy has a point. Awesome ideas, great spokesperson.

    Loved it.

  • this guy needs a glass of water

  • how much energy do you need to produce those mirrors? Where do we get the power for those?

  • @MatsMinds They could be made of Mylar. Much like the inflated plastic film roof of the biodome.

also: concentrated-solar furnaces can melt glass to make mirrors.

  • @roidroid But you need to make those in the first place, and get more energy out of them than you put in; is that feasible? Genuine question here. Plastic is made from oil as well, no oil, no plastic roof by the way.

  • @MatsMinds plastic can be made from various renewables as well.

i don't think he said anywhere in the video that he's going to be dropped in the desert naked, and he needs to build all his own tools, harvest all of his energy (starting with nothing!) and then create these things from scratch. He didn't say that. We CAN use already existing tools to create these things to reach our goals.

It will take energy to create. They won't break-even instantly, no investment does that.

  • @roidroid No he didn't say that, I ám saying that I'm highly skeptical of this very optimistic world view where we could somehow become sustainable while still basing ourselves on depleting resources. If we can make these type of things from chitin and mirrors I'd be a lot happier (I like the video overall by the way thought). But our dependency on oil for.. well, everything (fertilizers not being least of all) leads me to believe that we shouldn't be so confident about this.

  • @MatsMinds ah i see. So it's more that... we should have ways of creating these structures and buildings that doesn't deplete resources. It looks like it's mostly created of steel, concrete and plastic.

yeah i suppose it's a valid point. It'd take a lot more planning to make it absolutely zero impact, it may even be worth doing. But i'd hate to see the project procrastinated into oblivion while striving after such perfection. I'd rather see something built now, and treat it as a step.

  • @MatsMinds It's the need to make money (from oil for example) that holds back the wide use of sustainable systems. The technology is there, it's just not being used to it's full potential.

  • So beautiful. So important. (But I could say that about any TED talk.)

  • b-b-b-braingasim!!!! gigitty gigitty

  • A TED Talk a day keeps hopelessness away.

  • wouldn't a black shell trap heat? I'm confused

  • @PVanderston black both absorbs and radiates heat faster than any other colour.

at night there is no sunlight to absorb, so the black just radiates heat away from itself very efficiently.

  • absolutely brilliant, we need more people working on things like these

that's why i subscribed to TED, thx for the video!!!

  • brb, gotta go jump in 35,800 feet into the ocean. But that's ok. I have my RolexDeepSea Special!

Also, this restored alot interest in urban design/planning and architecture.

"This is not just possible, it's CRITICAL!"

  • Best talk in a while. Perhaps I see my own career

  • "Restorative design". That's amazing.

  • Now I want a Rolex

  • Examples from biology used in structures is fascinating. The Chinese Olympics swimming pool building was made to look like bubbles and I wondered if this was also environmentally a resource saving? Plant cells as a design tool - interesting.

  • Harvesting solar is expensive and if degrades over time creating waste products. Where gravity seems to be endless. We can harvest the difference between the gravitational pull of the moon, as gravity is the most powerful force in the universe, using exsisting technology. How much would you pay for free power for the rest of your life? $100, $1000, $5000. Projects like these are hard to fund because of BP, Mobil, caltex etc. It will take power of the people to get this one up and running.

  • @geza96 that's not true; gravitational force is actually one of the weaker forces in the universe. watch Brian Greene's NOVA special, he does a good job explaining all the different forces and their hierarchy.

  • @geza96 that's not true at all; gravity is by far the weakest of all the forces in the universe. look up fundamental interaction on Wiki.

  • @geza96

"gravity is the most powerful force in the universe"

Actually, gravity is the weakest of the interactive forces. The strong nuclear force is many magnitudes stronger, but of course you need nuclear plants that harvest even a tiny fraction of that.

  • Desertification is a scary thought. Dessertification sounds delicious.

  • Best Ted I've seen in a long time. Let's get back to these type of discussions.

  • @HashDylan Agreed.

  • one of the shortest presentation of ideas on TedTalks. I believe in nature as does he, as we all should. Reconnect and we shall live prosperously. Really inspiring!!! thumbs up

  • Inspiring!!! :)

  • These are great ideas, but how do we make it happen?

In an old TED speech given by Bjorn Lomborg, he spoke about how to prioritize our focuses in saving the world. He made so much sense, but once again it's not as easy as just talking about it. How can people contribute to such a cause? Where would they look?

  • check out THE VENUS PROJECT!

  • !) Radical increases in resource efficiency.

    2) Closed-loop system.

    3) Solar economy.

    Lets get to it!

  • You have added to my reasoning to going to engineering.

  • Thank you, TED, for finally providing us with an interesting speaker. Loved this one.

  • Would a place like Iceland be a good place to start implementing some of these elements of The Sustainability Revolution ? I think so because of the presence of geothermal-energy there.

  • @DlABL0GlCAL A good place to start is everywhere :)

  • Great TED talk!

  • Lex Luthor!? We meet again

  • dope concepts here, but were the last 3 minutes on Rolex's self-indulgence really necessary?

  • Wow, fucking impressive. Sign me up.

  • Lex Luthor always has great ideas!

  • @thockoro Professor X

  • @thockoro hahaha, I actually searched for the video from youtube, so I could drop a comment about Lex Luthor here. :D

  • Smart, very smart

  • Amazing talk !!!!

  • Boooooo, we want Al Gore!

  • Brilliant! Iove these types of talks!

  • Ahh... now I remember why I subscribed to this channel. This talk was awesome.

  • Straight up, this was a great talk

  • I am a big free market fan who is skeptical of environmentalism, but this is really quite brilliant stuff.

  • Way to go, Lex Luthor! Nice video, inspiring and full of hope.

  • This started out with so much promise but then it just went off in an looney environmentalist tangent. I would rather listen to the women talks than this nonsense.

  • Jehovah God did it first. Man mimicked animals in making every vestige of technology advantages today.

  • This guy reminds me of Gunter Pauli (ZERI) meets Permaculture. :)

  • this is exactly why I love and study biology , we can learn so much from nature

  • Good talk, it has become a tidbit feminist-heavy lately.

Am i the only one that get the feeling that less talk more action would benefit the cause for equality more than putting blame on all and nothing?

  • I don't think he's heard of Methane or Carbon dioxide.

  • this was a fantastic talk...just like watching young Jacque Fresco:) great ideas!

  • What is the evidence that the beetle can dettect a forest fire at 80 km?

  • @RickeyRamone the beetle flies towards forrest fires, from upto 80kms away. I think fire is necessary for it to breed or something.

  • I like this talk. Using evolution to further innovate architecture is a great idea. The potential of solar panels is being shown in Spain and its annoying to know its just brushed under the carpet as an alternative fuel source. I look at the rooftops of London and see thousands of acres of potential energy conversion space. Not the best country of course but the idea is sound.

  • Concerning the ad at the video's end: How many people wearing Rolex's take them swimming at 12 thousand feet below sea level?

  • lex luthor

  • Nice "timing" for the rolex watch commercial.

  • this is what we soo much need in these times.

  • A Good TED Talk after a loooong time..

  • Finally - a TED video where I understood the time line of the Rolex Watch.

  • This is the kind of video I turn to TED for. Too bad many of the presentations are pure drivel.

  • If someone told me this guy is really Professor X, I would totally believe it !!

  • possibly my favorite TED talk of all time

  • I'm trying to find a second like button because this is an amazing TED talk

  • Fantastic!

  • very interesting, more talks like that, TED

  • I have to say, this advertising they do at the end actually got me to listen to all of it. I just spent the entire time reading comments and talking to a friend about the video while this commercial was on.

  • 2 higest rated comments are so true, at last someone stand up to say the truth , that recent videos were feminist bull**** and theists should be very confused.

On topic : Great talk, really worth to spread, at least it was intresting idea, and well presented indeed.

  • "Ingenuity, if you can call it that"

    you can.

  • I would want to contribute to this. Where to begin? Does anyone know?

  • why would you strap a Rolex to a submarine..... for crying out loud, 2m waterproof is far enough for a filthy fat rich snob to swim to

  • Dear TED, please invite Architect/Painter Paul Laffoley to present some of his mind expanding designs in the near future. His deal not only with optimizing the physical environment, but also the sensibilities and conditions inherent within consciousness as optimized coherent forms emerge internally and externally. As society evolves, so do the sensibilities. And today, it's evident there are many individuals who would welcome new forms of perception and coherence. (thx for all the illuminations)

  • If money wasn't an barrier, we could be doing this right now, on a global scale. But no, we will continue cyclical consumption to the point of near extinction and destroy the environment as we do that. All thanks to the monetary system.

  • brilliant! finally.

  • this sounds like the venus project

  • great talk

  • great talk!!!

  • About to watch this video, but if you like bioarchitecture, check out the work of Michael Rice. Pretty amazing stuff.

  • Evolution has given mastery to living beings and we should try to learn it from them.

  • I think this is just what we need.

Unfortunately, technology costs money (to build, maintain, even repair) and most corporations and goverments (with their 4 year terms) don't think long term (10, 20, even 30 years) they want their buck now.

  • What a fine talk.

  • best one in a while, this is why i watch.

  • A proper ted talk, with radical ideas and 'plug and play' suggestions for how to make things better. This is what I watch for :)

  • @JmkLcAeJsm

    Well said.

  • @JmkLcAeJsm what if ideas like this were planted into kids heads like this instead of rehashed and regurgitated stuff. . send their minds spinning.with possibityes . . this what school ought be about. . .there would no be a bored kid in class

  • Reminiscent of the old Ted Talks

  • finally - a TED video which is not some boring feminist bullshit. bravo.

  • @dootzky richard dawkins was on TED talks xd...even dan dannett

  • @dootzky your comment translated - i'm scared of women and i don't feel like a man but i'm gunna wing it

  • @twistedbass I'm sure you jumped to the wrong conclusion. I too noticed the females on TED are in a completely different league than this guy and a lot of innovators before him on TED.

Women don't make me nervous but damn those on TEd sure lack quality and that's frustrating.

  • @ratje67 Quality is a perception, there is no reality. I am a human being. I don't judge someone by their gender, All i see is a human being talking about what matters to him or her. Humanity first gender second. A cat is a cat if its black or white. men are men if they are black or white. Humans are humans male or female. Does a racist prefer white dogs to black dogs ? Does your gender come before your humanity ??

  • @twistedbass15 yeah, very PC of you. I wouldn't judge by gender, an idea is an idea. But if TED divides by gender we can judge gender, that's excactly the intent of having TED-women. They organise all female meetings and that's where the gender judging began. Quality in technology is NOT just a perception, even in art and music there's difference in quality. Bad songs and bad talks exist.

Compared to the gender neutral talks (where men dominate, I agree) The female equivalent is painfully lame.

  • @ratje67 Again, there is no reality !! Bad taste is a perception, bad music is a perception. I do agree that Ted women makes us judge gender, but sexist comments are retarded.

All music is good its just a matter of taste.

There is no such thing as bad weather.

Most humans lack a broad view

Most people moan when it rains but the essence of life falls free from the sky.

    fReE YoUr MiNd

    Zeitgeist Moving Forward !!

    Peace

  • @twistedbass15 I think you need to work on your perception if you deny the existence of reality and can't distinguish difference in quality. ( I never mentioned taste)

And first of all I want you to point out where I was being sexist

  • @ratje67 Go beat ya guide dog with ya white stick man

    :-/

  • @twistedbass15 That's a strange advice, makes no sense and doesn't answer anything

  • @ratje67 its ok man, go back to sleep, everything is ok, don't worry, pay your taxes, go to work, don't think too much, the sun rises and sets, democracy is real, america is the greatest country in the world, armies fight for peace, weather is good and bad, television is a great source of knowledge, cures for cancer don't exist, our governments care for us, all religious people are sane, vote, have sex , buy a big screen tv, relax, everything is ok, cuppa tea ??

  • @dootzky TED videos are about the universal in-built intrinsic value of humanity (men and women and everything in between is counted as human) and IMHO you have clearly missed the point of the TED talks you label as boring feminist bullshit.. trying to bring us closer together might be boring to you, but you can always not watch it. peace to u.

  • @dootzky I think I've been watching some alternate universe version of TED where most talks are pretty interesting.

  • @dootzky These comments are worse than TED Women.

  • @dootzky I think if you look closer this is feminist too.

  • @dootzky Obviously you do not watch TED Talks much! And neither does the 62 who gave your comment a thumbs up! LOL!

  • @dootzky it did seem like for a while that TED was being overrun with feminism, it's a legit argument tho, but in moderation ;)

  • @dootzky You said shit, I'm telling mom! Mooooooom!!!

  • @dootzky ditto. I am not proud of a gender, nationality, *race*, ethnicity, and so on. No-one ever did anything to earn those, they were just born into it. Its brilliant ideas like this that matter.

  • @OldSchoolSkill the internet is in grave danger - see accessnow org "Stop the Switch!"

  • Sounds great. Now to destroy the political class.

  • brilliant and exciting ideas

  • I request Jaque Fresco be invited to do TED talk. thumbs up.

  • @armarjaleo Great idea. Imagine if all the information for example in this talk were used to further develop the Venus Project...

  • Take a drink! My god man your mouth sounds dry.

  • Truly inspired. Amazing.

  • wow that was awesome... i need a watch..

    lol

  • Yep! Zeitgeist FTW :))

  • I tried to do a closed loop myself but I'm not flexible enough.

  • Wow... this guy is genius. If only people didn't suck so much we could actually go ahead with this...

  • make failure history :). Go intellectual richness!

  • I cried halfway watching this

  • @OldSchoolSkill too late, the democrats didn't wake up for the November 2010 elections and now we have to fight stupidity every other day from the republicans. Forget about less killing, etc - they will slash public education so that people are more ignorant than they already are. (The republicans are not aware that they are dangerously coming close to the situation in Egypt ...)

  • So when can I buy I my giant dome with a custom ecosystem. I tired of living in my house I want to live in a giant dome where I can sleep in a hammock and eat off the land.

  • Who in their right mind 'dislikes' a TED talk!?

  • @GreatSmeagola Oil executives?

  • @TheBlindGeek

    Bahahaa, nice

  • @OldSchoolSkill There is pretty much no such thing as terrorism. It's a fabricated threat. Just saying.

  • this was one of the best TED videos in a while... WOW

  • We need to put this effect into planning. Right now.

  • I was going to say that using carbon nanotubes, like the Japanese plan on doing with the pyramid(shimizu), but I think this is much more cost-efficient. Great work!

  • I really like the idea of a closed loop system

  • one of the best talks ever.

  • I ASKED MYSELF THE SAME THING

  • Can i mirror this video?
