  • what happened to the original singer? they made it big without him< but i really loved his voice anyway.

  • @wildbill259 Terry Luttrell is still around he's currently in a local band around the Champaign, IL area called the Tons O' Fun band...they do a lot of covers with a horn section...basically Chicago, Huey Lewis, and other stuff like that

  • great host

  • LOVE these guys-saw them many times in Chicago in the late 60's.

    BUT

When this vid started,I actually thought the guy introducing them was Richard Pryor doing one of his bits!!

  • @roylflush well either way u should be hangin w/ the host.....so when did they get the fag? singer?

  • great song

  • That presenter must have been sponsored by Valium.

  • WoW,,

  • Litrell is good for a blues style singer and its a excellent song but i wonder how much further this band would have gone if Kevin Cronin didnt come along./but one thing for sure, Gary Richrath on lead guitar is excellent he can jam. and i notice not much came out new that hit the charts after he left.

  • My God, this guy makes Tad "No Soul" Simmons look like George Clinton!

  • The host looks & sounds like Richard Pryor!

  • Found their first album in a Utica NY radiostation throw-out pile in 1971...what a treat! Richrath is unbelievable in several of the songs...I don't disrespect the Kevin Cronin Speedwagon...but they were never this edgy again! Love bar bands...these guys blow the doors off all the Top40 bands of today....and Rap???? Forget it (everyone will in a few years, and this stuff will still be revered.

  • Wow...that's really Terry Lutrell? When after this did he morph into "Jon Anderson"? And how?

  • What a gem. Great find!

  • Very cool old school REO,refreshing to see the roots.

  • This if AWESOME!!! I totally forgot about Terry doing vocals@!

  • Wow ist der Ansager Scheiße ...

  • wow, this is how I remember REO! As a musician in the midwest I made friends with Gary and Kevin since we were their backup band a number of times. Awesome to see this classic archive.

  • GOOD GOD, The Host just took a bottle of Valium! TOO FUNNY!

  • I like the Host, he was so professionally calm and composed with attitude...thats how it shud be!

  • The first album reminds me of Bloodrock--same type of blue-collar guitar and organ sound

  • if the host said that they had a second album already recorded with lutrell then........... this is confusing

  • Did he effin say "Cary" Richrath?

  • @bigtmilano12 No ,he said Gary

  • Reo Speedwagon with Terry Lutrell as lead vocalist there sound was more soul than rock.

  • Fantastic piece of nostalgia! It is a shame that REO didn't continue in this vain. By the 80's they had sold out to the almighty $. Thanks for the post!

  • @MrGregmac yeah. damn those musicians who want to make a decent living doing what they do...they should just do it for free for all of us fans, fuck the fact that they have kids and mortgages like the rest of us. they are there to serve our own version of what rock and roll is supposed to be, not their own!!!

  • What a trip I never knew?

  • Rumors of the host's death were NOT over-exaggerated. One of my favorite REO tunes and a singular album in many ways.

  • the host died and somebody forgot to tell him

  • Man, I grew up with Speedwagon, and I haven't even seen this one! Nice digging!

  • Terry sounds better than Kevin. Kevin just has more spunk.

  • The host needs to do Soul Train

  • 157 Riverside Avenue.

  • ..did they know that there it was a guitarist, too?????

  • Champaign Illinois baby

  • terry is a truck driver now no shit!

  • Terry left after this record to sing for STARCASTLE not agood move

  • The first REO Sw really stuck with me all these years! Hard rocking blues!

  • Thank You for the reo vids. Love me any kind of reo with Gary! God Bless and here is 2 an awesome new year!

  • Who is that singing? I enjoyed this!

REO WAS a great band. They sold their soul when they released that cheesy "High Infidelity" album

  • I don't know about this REO Speedwagon! I know the "I can't fight this feeling anymore" one.

  • Noone believes me that at one time they were a great band. Thanks for this!

  • @wileydoc yes, I can attest to that. That 80s pop fluff they made destroyed the band.

  • @TheFearlessFreep Commercialism killed creativity. 30 years later, music is no longer an 'art', but a copycat, scared to promote creativity, bland imitation of what music once was.

-Yeah, thats harsh, I studied music business and management, creativity has no place in music business anymore.

  • @TheFearlessFreep I agree,. I didn't start listening to them until the 80's because I was 13 yrs old then and their pop song album Hi Infedility was VERY popular however when I got older I went back and listened to their old stuff and thats why I say I agree!!

  • do you think the host knew one dam thing about this band or any other band. i think he was doing the weather report before he got this gig...Geez

  • At 5:45 (on wall, behind lead guitar).it looks like the new windows logo

  • At 5:45 (on wall, behind lead guitar).it looks like the new windows logo

  • GREAT. i believe this style of music with organ and guitar/bass kranken simialar to boston, came from freddie king.check his vids out on utube.

  • Cary Richrath. hahah man, dude can't read.

  • yeah...thats really cool.........first class band

  • Luttrell just doesn't have the voice or the stage presence of Cronin. They sound a little like the Blasters here.

  • 714 Qualudes

  • Estimated friend, if you want to listen again to this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - it looks for his direction URL for Google (scribe Musica para Mimos in Google)-. The best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is going to please you, is very good ...!!!

  • wow this is some good old stuff. yay!

  • cool

  • Terry Luttrell's mustache frightens me. I think it is possessed by the devil.

  • I hate when they let cokeheads host a show!

  • London says they just played "Gypsy Woman's Passion" so where is it? can u post it?

  • London Branch...Ladies' Man

  • This is cool, the original REO, but c'mon. This was before they made the necessary changes to hit the big time. The bass player is bald and the singer sings with his eyes closed. Cronin sings this song and Ridin' The Storm Out better.

  • This is the REO I remember from Champaign Illinois, the Red Lion Inn. 50 Cent cover charge when they were playing and the place was ALWAYS packed!

  • @cyberties Yeah, I grew up in Decatur, about 45 miles south of Champaign and they were real legends even then. Went to Champaign once trying to get in those places and I looked much younger than my 16 or 17 years and so I had little luck getting served.

  • Wow I didn't know this band was around that long and also I didn't know they had a different lead singer. They sounded awesome by the way, they rocked!! Anyhow it looks like I'm still a newbie to classic rock.

  • @RussX5Z Original vocalist Terry Luttrell formed the band Starcastle. The self titled debut album is fantastic. Many people say they sound like Yes.

  • Quaaludes

  • This was new when I was growing up

    .Rock-n-Roll

    why are people quoting VH1?

  • Yeah, it's good to see some vintage REO before they turned into a pussy pop hit machine (just like Styx and Journey). All were great bands before they went commercial, although I'm sure they made a hell of a lot more money once they did!

  • ORIGINAL REO.....nice to not see Cronin for a change....... Great post! The "Host" was a bit too "hyper" for me though! l.o.l.

  • This is definitely better than Kevin Cronin. Mike Murphy was the best, though.

  • the host, must been on some good drugs

  • Valium and Tele Prompters don't mix Mr. host :)

  • First let me say I LOVE REO! My first concert was REO opening for Joe Walsh back in 1974 in Buffalo, NY. but the host and the whole early 70's vibe makes this thing hysterical! LMAO. Thanks for unburying this little gem. The original first album lineup with Terry on lead vocals. Gary had mad chops even back then!

  • If he isn't reading a cue card, then wow...

  • REO "157 Riverside Ave" 1967-2010

  • Some says "rock group" others "rock band". For me a band is a large group of people playing and here they are just 5 persons rocking like no future.

  • Orale loco! esta rola esta chida real rock'nblues me gusto ,I like good song!

  • this is it. damn !

  • Right?? VenusBlue4U?? Praise God! lol!!

  • thank god for kevin cronin

  • I thought his singing was great!

  • I think this guy is perhaps an even worse TV presenter than Don Kirshner!

  • Early signs of Gary's talent!

  • Major overhaul was done to make REO famous. Fired lead singer..replaced by Kevin Cronin, fired balding bass player..replaced by Bruce Hall.

  • The Don Kirchner clips with Mike Murphy were pulled last year. --Murphy's version of "157" was among them. He was a great frontman. You can see him on keys in a vid of Steve Pierson Blues band-check it out.

  • This dude is on some good mexican mud.....

  • nice host, great entertainer.

  • Can this dude get any more excited???

  • before cronin f/d it up

  • I gave it five stars just for the vintage! (agreeing with Kpd222) Great find.

  • god, that host needs to calm down!!

  • @Dylanfanh61 I fell asleep during the intro!!!

  • What happened to all the videos that had Mike Murphy singing with them? I think they were DK Rock concert or one of those shows. Those were also good.

  • nice post man where the heck did you dig this up?

  • An absolute Rock and Roll band!!

  • love the hair.

  • this is great! very rare. thanks for the post. Ritchrath was playing the blues great even back then.

  • This guy is high, far out man.

  • The into guy is funny LMAO

  • love 'em!

  • So cool to see the REAL REO before Kevin Kronin castrated the band.

  • Kevin "Schlock" Cronin!

  • the dudes were like so fine when I was in high school...always loved them and never had an "alka-seltzer" moment...except maybe after too many suds, bit too much smoke and a little too much sex...LOL....

  • you must be joking

  • Kevin Crowin is REO Speedwagon

  • As much as I like Kevin (and Terry and Mike, for that matter), I fail to see how any one person can be a full band, barring the "one-man-band" acts scattered around the globe

  • kevin is> IMO and millions of others. This is not real REO, this is the original. The original couldn't cut it until Kevin.

  • take it on the run is a hard rock song...not Pop

Keep on lovin you is Pop

  • Greg Philbin looked like he was about 60-years old an all those album covers, and here, too!

  • Somehow, this announcer's dry, intellectual PBS-style introduction is supposed to "legitmize" this "glorified" redneck bar band as "serious' musicians

  • glorified redneck bar band?

The wildest ride in Hard rock is from Champaign,Il !

    ..

And champaign isn't southern Il, you dimwit !

  • sorry,i didnt fast forward or try to hear the song.the drool lifeless talking at the start ruined it.wasnt worth the time to watch when the start done messed it up.this goes to show you the thought process of the people trying to be cool and hip but still have thier control over the show.

  • Whats up with the "HIP" black dude

kickin back in the goofy 70s swivel

chair like hes some intellectual art

or music afficianado? I bet he doesn't

who the fuck REO is or doesn't even

give a shit! All he wants to do is get the

show over with and get back to his "pad"

lube up and stick his wank in the ole'lady!!

    LOLOLOLOL! :D

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah..I live in East Peoria,so I agree..

  • No, Gary Richrath did!

  • Real REO my ass!!! This turkey sucks, Kevin put them on the map and they sold millions of albulms because of him !!!

  • AT the time, I remember record store dudes telling me that Journey was better before Steve Perry, but it seems impossible considering what a great singer he was. Then again, when he went solo, it was horrid. I remember liking REO until they went commercial, but now a few of those songs sound good. This is pretty standard bar blues.

  • Saw these fellas in Des Moines Iowa circa '74 with BOC and Focus. We all rode the storm out. They were a great band for a few albums and then went (album label) syrupy ballad junk. REO II is an incredible rock album.

  • KEVIN CRONIN DID NOT RUIN REO SPEEDWAGON HE MADE IT BETTER, I'LL TAKE HIM ANY DAY OVER THIS TURKEY.........

    whatever

  • I agree.

  • the decline of american culture ~ sigh ~

  • right back to the good times, who is fuzzylilhippiechic...VERY KOOL NAME

  • This is Awesome! Takes me back to the good old days when Rock & Roll wasn't generic. \m/

  • Journey started thiz way also. Playing fusion rock was what they started with and I heard an old demo of it acouple weeks back. It was great.

  • Agreed! REO WAS great at onetime. Journey was WAY better without Perry. Fusion rock was the way these bands started just like the original Kansas.

  • Yes, all those bands started out in fusion, but after, they put out some of the best , memorable music of all time. Steve Perry was a singing God, Keep on running and take it on the run are still in my top 50 favorite songs, and Kansas , "Carry onward wayward son" and Dust in the wind, are both classics. Learn to like them for their pre and post careers.

  • This was the REO that got me hooked. After about the first 4 albums, they turned into a crappy ballad band. I met them when Murphy was with them, and the rest of the band seemed to dislike him. Rumor has it that Richrath won't quit drinking to go back on the road with them. What a shame.

  • REO ROCKED !!! Too bad Kevin Cronin had to ruin a good band..The album they did with Michael Murphy on vocals(lost in a dream) was one of their best.

  • It's interesting to see them so early on in their career and with their first singer. People can say what they want about Kevin. He may not have been the best singer, but he had his own style, and he wrote hit songs, some cheesy, some rockin'. I finally got a chance to see them at Six Flags in 1990 and was really excited because I wanted to see Gary. I was so disappointed to find out at the show that he wasn't with them. The show was good, but would have been better with Gary.

  • that guitar solo was insane!

  • WoW olook at the hair...

  • Is that Freddie Mercury??

  • REO Speedwagon? More like REO SpeedFAGon. Am I rite???

  • wtf is your problem man. reo kicks balls.

they'd kick ur balls to, if u had any.

  • This is the band I remember from the late 60's, early 70's. Best bar band I ever heard. Would like to see or hear a recording of them playing "Johnny Be Good" or "Sympathy for the Devil"

  • Kevin may or may not be gay. Reo is

Gary and Neal. REo is crap without them.

  • Wow, I've read about the original line-up, but never seen it until now. Very cool old vid!

  • this is the REAL Speedwagon. Totally old school, before Cronin came in and started writing his housewife rock BS.

  • I went to truck driving school with Terry really awesome guy he became a born-again Christian decided he wanted to settle down.

  • I saw them play at a bar in Cedarburg Wi (nowhere) in the summer of 71. They kicked ass

  • Not too small of a town anymore. Sounds like it was fun!

  • ok guys..they got Kevin in and then kicked him out and THEN realized what they did and said "we gotta get Kevin back"..he a hit machine and no he is not gay...and if the original singer is soooo good...where is he?..nowhere cuz he aint done a damn thing since he got kicked out

  • Actually THIS is the ONLY real REO!!

  • plain and simple....no Kevin Cronin=no REO this is gay as hell

  • ...and Kevin Cronin isn't gay? "Take it on the run... I'm goin' to keep on lovin' you...In your letter"?

  • Gary Richrath-where are you? I phoned the number on the back of my live 'you get what you play for' album I have been waiting for you to call since 1977 ;-D

Richrath,He is so gifted with his hands!

  • ekgr212...the 1971 album would be called"REO SPEEDWAGON" mighty fine rock-n-roll.... : ) .......livingabovethe12th rock on bro....peace

  • what is the name of a cd with these members in the band?

  • it is there first 2 albums

  • My first rock concert -1971 Marshalltown,Iowa REO Speedwagon and some no name opening act...Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes..$3 at the door...OMG!

  • This is Great!

  • Drummer-Alan Gratzer was the heartBeat of REO!!!

  • When u push ppl hard, and/or they push themselves, ppl are capable of great things. When there is a tough love outcome, ppl will think about the risk of their actions, and ususally make good decisions. America has become a society of "everyone deserves everything", whether they earn it or not. And that "PUSSY" way of thinking, is bringing our great country down! If you want it, EARN IT!

  • this country was founded on the principle of if you want it take it

  • I don't totally disagree with you though. If I put on "Since I've Been", or "Achilles Last Stand", I am blown away. I cant say the same for "Fool In The Rain". peace!

  • Listen crissy, 1st of all, my ass isn't fat. Hot chicks have bounced quarters off of it. 2nd, Many a rock fan would argue with you on Zep turning pop. The music changed quite a bit from even 77', to 79/80. more keyboards/synthesisers etc, but I'd hardly call In Through pop. I have been a hard core Zep fan since In through came out. B4 that, Kiss, Aerosmith, Steve Miller, etc. In through is my least favourite album, along with CODA, but I wouldn't rate the music as bad or too poppy, maybe all of"

  • you must understand.

I was into Zep when they first came out,

Saw em' at The Grand Ballroom in Detroit in 69' and i've been into em ever since.

    That is real zep.

    Not "In through"

    i understand your point.

    believe me i do.

    but you must get mine...

    I-Physical Graffitti is real zep.

  • PeterCris, I understand but still think that album was just in line with the music of the time. Groups like Zep, had caught a lot of shit from the likes of Billy Idol, & Jonny Rotten, for being hippy dinasaurs. Also, Page and Bonham were messing with heroin. The album was put together mostly by Plant & Jones.

  • If you were a REAL musician, you wouldn't refer to the tracks on "In through the outdoor" as "Shit songs". There is a reason that Led Zeppelin is probably the greatest band of all time, and that reason is Unbelievable Talent, from all 4 members! You must be under 30

  • Okay,

compare "All My Love" to "Since I've Been Loving You"

    or how about

    "The Lemon Song"?

    or anything from 1-Physical Graffitti...

    there is no comparison.

because they turned into shitty pop song writers.

you must not be a musician.

  • Younger people Just do not know good songs/Bands & how to really party. They do not know how to really listen to a band like Led Zeppelin.

  • I liked Mike Murphy on vocal

    Cronin sucks

  • Comment removed

  • THESE GUYS are just Loaded..........with TALENT!!!

  • btw, this is my first time to see their orginal vocalist. He is awesome!

  • He reminds me a little of Soundgarden/Audioslave's Chris Cornell.

  • Keven is great a vocalist but, w/OUT Gary? C'mon the band is a joke. I'm

glad to see Gary gere. Gary RULES!

  • i loved them growing up, i liked them less after" keep on loving you" flying turkey trot, long version, i really liked
