Today would have been opening day of the fair. Had to watch this video to get my "fix".... Thanks, Dave, for letting us have a glimpse back. Love it.!
I miss the old faor . It ran from 1869 util 1981, endedn I was 8. John Leahy didn''t leave a clause in his will for the fair to continue. It closed forever in 1981 six years after he died. But, I still have memores of the food and the statues and everything
OMG this was fantastic! Zarcone's grinders - we used to eat there because my Dad knew Mr. Zarcone! The year after my Dad died, Mr. Zarcone wouldn't let my mom pay. And Dutch Village - my grandparents would come up every year for the fair and the first place my grandmother always hit was the gingerbread booth there (and she'd ask for extra whipped cream). During high school we'd go to the races there on Saturday nights - Flyin' Freddy Foshay & Chick Stockwell! Thank you for wonderful memories!!
I love it! Have been in Florida for 28 years now but grew up 15 minutes from the Danbury Fair grounds....Saturday nights at the stock car races rooting for Don LaJoie or Dick Barlow....and we never missed the fair when it came around! I was so sad years ago when I heard they were replacing the fairgrounds with a new mall :(
I'm posting this on my FB as well for all my old high school friends! Great song!
Great song & video, but I couldn't help but notice that you pronounced Danbury "Dan-burry" which is the way many people new to the area pronounce it. Are you a native? Native Danburians pronounce it "Dan-berry."
@fiftyolives You're right. Many people do pronounce it Dan-berry. But I "think" the correct pronunciation is Dan-bury as I did in the song. I guess it's like po-tay-to or po-tah-to. I'm not native to the Danbury area, but have lived here a LONG time. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Great video footage.I remember going to the Danbury Fair as far back as 1970 when I was 6 years old. Lots of fun and the races too! Miss those days alot. Thank you for posting this, it sure brings me back to my youth.Love the song too.
I was so surprised to see the Great Danbury State Fair preserved in this video. My aunt and uncle and their country band used to play at the fair every year. I miss the racing there too. It was a lot of fun back then.
What can I say? Kenny Chesney can only sing, " I Go Back". You have really taken us back. We are going to have to start you a fan club. Can we request this on the radio? Love the video. I am AMAZED!!
Excellent video. Every year I would march in the weekend parades at the fair with the Danbury Drum Corps. I loved and I miss the fair. Your video brought back many nice memories.
