Id rather have a super quiet slow submarine with fantastic sonar and firecontrol then a fast sub. And the 688s, especially the 688i variants, are definitely better then most here.

Believe it or not, the Seawolf Submarine is the most advance machine ever created by man. That includes anything ever sent into space, ie. spy satellites, spacecraft, etc. It was too expensive to build the number the Navy wanted. That is why the Virginian Class subs were created. In another life I served in the US Navy as an OTA (submarine tracker), and I learned a lot of useless knowledge concerning nuclear/diesel submarines. Hands down the US makes the quietest, deadliest subs in the world. The Seawolf class was just coming online when I chose to leave but if it was better than the 688 class as touted then it was the killing machine it was designed to be. The Russian Alpha class was the fastest but thats useless when all of the N. Atlantic fleet knew your position!!

Weapons - different torpedoes can do different things. Yes, they all eventually do damage when armed - but their systems are different. Astute is a good submarine though!

Astute class is by far the most advanced submarine in the world today,its not about speed nor is it about how deep a sub can go,it's about the technology on board that can detect other subs and the ability to remain quiet and undetected. Astute class leads the world on this. That said build quality of Astute (built at Barrow-in-Furness) is extremely high, attention to detail is second to none. So sorry Astute leads the way in my opinion and experience.
