if you look at other  clonning videos here on youtube ull come across ways to do it on vista or xp. some videos may differ and the pc program you have may be out of date, watch videos for more detail, just a suggestion

He's using Final Cut Pro. It is one of the best, if not the best, editing softwares out there. It is used to make Hollywood feature films. It is only available for Mac.

Actually After Effects isnt the best for this kind of thing because its just a simple layer effect and it involves syncing things up. You would be better off using Adobe Premiere if you are on a PC.

Steve uses Final Cut Pro within the film...most editing softwares will allow you to layer video though...windows movie maker won't but i don't know any other that won't

But how... how do you get the interaction between the two characters to align just right?

There are two pretty good ways -- you could have someone reading the script off-camera, and then just mute the clip, or you could just guess and slow down/speed up the clips as needed -- Elements has a feature (Time-Stretch Command) that you can change the speed of a clip to anything so it fit the space perfectly (that's what I did). People focus on the talking people so they don't notice if the others are moving slower than normal.
