Richard Jordan was perfect for Pitt in the early books in terms of appearance and in acting terms made a decent fist of a lousy script and lacklustre directing. In fact up until "Dragon", I still mentally pictured Pitt as looking very much like Richard Jordan. The later books made Pitt more of a "superman", not to mention a Mary Sue - a part which I couldn't see Jordan readily accepting. A much better actor than given credit for, and a sad loss much too young.
In my Raise The Titanic novel adaption, Dirk Pitt is 100% much like Richard Jordan but a few years younger. His looks and voice are pretty much the same except that his beard is not as thick as Jordon's.
Excellent. I used to watch this film a lot as a kid because of how interested I was in Titanic. In a way that got me into the Pitt books. Recently I read Sahara and pictured Jordan's Pitt. Seeing these pictures actually made me wish there had been films based on Vixen 03 and others (done a lot better or at least as faithfully) with Jordan as Pitt and perhaps, featuring Al Giordino unlike RTT.
Also made me wish Jordan was still around. A great actor sorely missed.
Jordon was the man who got me into the Dirk Pitt novels.
Thanks to the film and novel, I've become more interested in the Titanic than ever before. I also describe Jordan's Pitt in novels Vixen 03 and Night Probe and somewhere in between Iceberg since that novel leads up the Titanic events.
I miss Jordon just like you. I'm making an Titanic novel adaption, dedicated to him.
I thought Jordan was fine as Pitt, that the problem was with the script. It was like they spent so much time on the techie stuff that they forgot they were supposed to be telling a story. Jordan was always electric with a good script. I often pass by the spot he filmed his last scenes in Gettysburg, a few miles from my house. Hard not to think about what a good actor he was when you see that spot as often as I do. Thanks for the photos.
Unfortunately at the time, the film was released, crittics felt that Jordon should have not played Pitt at all, and one of the reasons the film sank at the box office (no pun intended). Clive Cussler actually wanted Steve McQueen or James Garner for the role of Dirk Pitt. McQueen turned it down after he felt the script wasn't good.
Though I have seen his parts in the film (including your crossover Kanefan701) and Jordan's acting is not bad at all.
In fact when I read the RTT novel a few years ago, I imaged him as Dirk Pitt as I was reading, including scenes in the novel that never made it into the movie. If Jordan was still alive, I would have love to hear what had to say about the film and his reaction to its outcome at the box office.
It would be interesting to hear what he thought of the film, because he apparently was not a man to mince words. If you asked him what he thought of something, you'd better be ready for an honest answer.
I've seen people write on the internet that critics didn't like Jordan in the part, but I have yet to see a review that said that. The ones I read all said basically the same thing - the film had a lousy script. Jordan was fine IMO but boy the script needed help.
The producers should've brought in another writer (or more) to polish the script. But I guess they were in a hurry to get the movie out to theatres that they didn't even bother to check to see any errors in the script. In fact it went through about ten rewrites, before they ended with the final version. While some versions of the script has been located, the first draft itself has yet to be found.
I've heard about the ten rewrites - one of them after the Pentagon got through with it, which had to doom the whole thing. Too bad the first draft isn't around - it would be an interesting subject for a script writing class to track the evolution (or de-evolution) of it.
It was all down to money. With a dozen re-writes to the films script, they had to draw the line somewhere. The films budget was only ever going to be £7, but by the time they had finished, it was a staggering £25million. Not even 12 drafts of the script could save it.
@RaiseTheTitanic1980 There you go - the money went into the techie stuff, which was fantastic, and I'll take it over CGI every time. But you have to have at least a remotely coherent story. Tech alone can't carry a film. The only part of the story that got to me was when Pitt raises the flag on the Titanic and smiles at it. Simple action, very moving. AND I'll bet the first draft of the script was A TON better than what they ended up with.
Sorry to the fans of these videos. I have turned these coloured images into black & white due to people taking screen caps from them and turning them into images and selling them on eBay. There are 3 of my RTT images on eBay already where someone has adapted them (badly) and trying to pass them off as originals.
I dont want to say anything Bad about the Actor but his Role in the Movie!
Dirk Pitt was such an Arse!

Richard Jordan was the best actor in the Titanic film.
I miss him very much.

So would I. I miss him so much. I too read the novel and I always imaged him as Dirk Pitt. Sometimes I even hear his voice when reading.
If Jordan was still alive, I would have love to hear what he had to say about playing as Pitt, the film and his reaction when the film came out.
God bless Jordon. RIP.

Richard jordan was a goodd dirk pitt and was Matthew Mcconoughey.
Jordan's pitt was more of a thinker and Mcconoughey's Pitt was more a man of action... two diffrent sides of the pitt characher.

The iTunes pop-up advert says this is music from the RTT Suite . . . . . . . . It is not.
