The tender, pained soft vocals and uitar plucking drift the song along and yes it's very pleasant, but then what makes the song is the final section beginning around 1min 58. Epic drums, piano and shoegaze type introspective guitar with the wonderful poem recite
@superjuce As far as I'm aware, they are on a break right now, although I hear they're performing at a Scottish festival in Aberdeen sometime this summer. Apart from that I don't think they have anything else planned. Roddy Woomble, lead singer however, has just released a new (2nd) solo album which is absolutely brilliant and I saw him a few months ago. Seriously recommend. Played a couple of Idlewild classics which was such a treat!
i think everyone here can identify or can at least understand the lyric "even if the breath between us smells of alcohol call it confusion in the bes way possible"
It's a really good song, but the integration with Edwin Morgan's poem undoubtedly excels. It gives me the shivers and I don't have English as my native language.
As a long fan of idlewild and an addict to their fast paced numbers i must say i think this is a compelling and utterly beautiful song and is one of their very finest works
this resonates with anyone that has travelled in The Far North of Scotland - 'Stopped in every passing place to watch the world move faster than we do'. thus evoking a Scotland I knew and loved 40 years ago.
@malcolmcog I as 14 when I brought this album in 2002, This song even then made me want to visit Northern Scotland, way up in the Highlands. I always got the image of the band writing this song in a country pub way up north sitting beside a log fire with me watching them from outside a window.
Idlewild have always promoted great imagery in there music for me, more so than any other band I listen too.
@GeordieLord yo dude just noticed your comment,i'm from fort william in the highlands, its nice enough up here, but if you can check out ullapool, its an amazing place, stunning scenery, great people

I still treasure my signed copy of Captain anyway.

No, its Edwin Morgan reading it, Idlewild asked him to write a piece for the song.

Is that Ken Stott reciting "Scottish Fiction"? It sounds like him.
scottishbigcats 2 years ago
It is the LEGENDERY poet Edwin Morgan reading his own poem Scottish Fiction.
I still cant believe that they got him to not only write a poem for their album but persuade the great man to read it for them.
The world is a better place for having Edwin Morgan's poetry.
It dosent sound anything like Ken Stott
He is from the East coast Edwin is from Glasgow.
