i went to see this in southampton 2 time one time in the stalls and one time standing up in a standing box i also had a backstage tour 2 see the set properly because the show is so dark yet it the wings there were so many lights
Few hours ago booked my ticket for Bristol. I'm coming from Russia to see this. I've got high hopes for this new staging and so. Thanks for posting these songs, they really helped to make my mind, 'cos I had doubted whether I should book it 6 months in advance or no...
Earl seems to me more like a "book-Javert" if you know what I mean... Like, remember that episode when he shouted at Valjean in the presence of Fantine and she died of shock. He's quite wild.
I was thinking about going to Paris for this, but I'm beginning to change my mind... Is it true that the staging is completely different? And if, is it changed for the better or the worse?
You can't really compare the two; the Tour has no revolve, so it is completely different, but not explicitly 'better' or 'worse'. Personally, I prefer London - simply because of the revolving stage. But certain things - the new staging of Javert's Suicide, for example, and the use of Hugo's paintings as projections - work beautifully, whereas other things work less-well, or possibly less-visually-effectively, than in London.
(I'm completely averse to change though, so slightly biased!)
@HenriJonathan the staging is different, but still very effective. and they do a very good job, particularly with the projections. Well worth a trip to paris, even if only to see owen jones as valjean
Actually, JOJ was the main reason, why I started to consider not going... He's among the top three of my least favourite Valjeans. I find he sounds less like he's singing and more like he's complaining. Plus, most of what I've seen of him is either dreafully overacted or not acted at all. Never been able to understand why so many people like him.
I had really high hopes for this, that's why I booked two sets of tickets in prime seats for Manchester.. I am beginning to regret it. The early signs aren't good, with JOJ being off with "vocal exhaustion" after only a week, and Earl clearly not being up to it. Why is everyone shouting?
I know Les Mis inside out, and JOJ is my favourite JVJ. But this is really, really not good.
I'm the same, booking for Cardiff, Birmingham & 2xBristol.... but I'm putting it down to this only being the 2nd show, and hoping it's gonna get better.
To be fair, Earl only sounds like he's clearing his throat in this song - Stars + Suicide were phenomenal. I wasn't that impressed by JOJ - I'd heard that he's everyone's fav, but I wasn't blown away. Earl was definitely the more impressive of the two on stage.
I'm hoping it's going to get better, for the £150 I've spent on more tickets!
@itsjustonething - I appreciate your honestly actually! I've not seen Earl during his W/E run as Javert (I avoided the Dave Shannon/Earl cast like the plague!), and agree - it can only get better from here.
John Owen-Jones was phenomenal as JVJ back in 2005-2006, particularly opposite Hans-Peter Janssens, (who, also, coincidentally phones in most nights nowadays.. the recent audios seem to confirm this!).. maybe he justs needs a while to get his form back.. And for Earl to STOP SHOUTING!!!
@jcdenton08 - I'm new to Les Mis - David Shannon and Earl were my first JVJ/Javert and I loved both of them. Earl was fantastic, WE and Tour (although it took a while to warm up this night!)
My friend saw JOJ back in the day and said he was better then than he had been in Cardiff, but only marginally! I've seen H-PJ in London and I honestly prefer Earl [and Jeff Nicholson, understudy, who is simply brilliant].
The Tour reviews seem good though, so here's hoping it was an off-night! :)
When I saw thism, I also did prefere London to the Tour. I think the Tour worked brilliant, JOJ sounded much better when I saw him than he does here, to be honest he may be sick or have vocal problems at this performance, I also did adore Earl as Javert! I didnt realy like this scene with the idea of them rowing a boat, it sets a whole different scene to what London does, but it works perfectly fine. A good production to be honest.
First voice: been searching the whole internets for that one voice!!!
