  • I clicked on this video thinking some old man was gonna be teaching. But when he looked up I was like "whoa" ! He's gorgeous lol.

  • It's because by making the chord, you are changing the harmonic hotspot.

  • thank youuu man!

  • Grazie Justin!

    Great "lesson"

  • Fuck the third string.

  • 4:28 Please don't ever f*ck the third string.

  • cool technique, dude! thx 4 it.

  • Do you use glue on fingernails ?? If so does it feel the same on your fingertips

  • @dwbluesband try getting acrylics, they take a little getting used to. But when you do it's awesome

  • @dwbluesband

It feels weird at first, I get acrylic nails put on, I can vouch that once you're used to them they're awesome.

  • Why not just play the Harp instead?

  • @dirtydonki

    1) Because you already own a guitar and know how to play it

    2) An average harp costs $2000

  • @tomghzel Touche. LMFAO!

  • @dirtydonki ;-P

  • this is a very helpful tutorial. good job.

  • Never forget Ted Greene while discussing Harp Harmonics. He's the man : D

  • Thumbs up if 4:10 sounds like "fucking" and 4:28 "fuck". =D hahaha

  • @cyphol makes ya wanna practise eh? :)

  • @CashmereMocha Wow? That really sucks!. Sounds like "Ed" needs a tune up to do business the right way? And so typical in the world nowdays and its excepted!. People like that need to be kicked in the head till it straightens their shitty way out of them..Hopefully you have time to deal with this matter and are able to do something about it? For me, just getting that together would be another headache..I hope 'Ed' eats shit for this.

  • I have been trying to figure out how Tommy Emmanuel did this and I found your channel. Great lesson, thank you for really explaining this.

  • An excellent explanation and demonstration of harp technique.

    Thanks!

    JR

  • Good tutorial, what kind of acoustic are you playing?

  • This is a real lesson.

  • the 17 people who disliked this.. dislike practice

  • @guitarcrts 18 thanks to me

  • I've never heard of this type of technique before I watched this video. But thanks to this nice tutorial I learned this in only a couple of minutes. Thanks!

  • just wanted to say, thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! I really appreciate it, keep the videos coming.

  • nice hat

  • i knew he had an accent before he even started talking lol

  • Can't wait to get this down!

  • what strings do you use?

  • I had the luck I've learned it by myself... It really makes songs sound better! I have been just searching for the cooler way to play. Thanks God there is a person who's teaching people really useful tricks :))

  • Man...I shouldn't have flunked at math :(

  • @diemutha666 Math sucks... Gatorade's better... :D

  • DONT PRACTICE WITH A CAPO you need it off to build up decent endurence practice it properly

  • the person who actually invented harp harmonics was lenny breau

  • Fascinating I just learned how to do harmonics on my harp. The title of your video caught my eye.

  • i dont understand it

  • this is cool i can see doing this in nasvill high strum tunning mix with iris king music

  • ive never heard of this technique...

  • 2:25 - That's what she said.

  • @1treyton1 roflmao!! This is a kinky guitar lesson isn't it?

  • how is this different from classical harmonics

  • @lucadepu Actually, it is not different, but the technique is to strum the strings with no harmonics alternatively to have some kind of harp effect

  • @simpro145 i thought it was KFC

  • Thank you so much for showing this! I've always been curious how to perform these.

  • 0:00

  • So beautiful, but I can't play it =\

  • @cbproducktions Practice!

  • Great lesson! Thanks!

  • thanks for share it!

  • How do you know which string to pick when you play the harmonic, and why?

  • oh, dude! I thought that I know everything about harmonics, but this is something new for me. thanks for the great lesson! keep up the good work!

  • i discovered this quite by accident i.e just being really weird. thanks for making sense of it.

  • lol in the begining it looks like your flicking us off on the fret board :P

  • you do a great job of explaining this. Thanks a lot for posting... This'll keep me practicing for awhile!

  • it is the same as tapped harmonics only you pluck with your thumb as well

  • so if it were an electric guitar, this technique is somewhat similar to tapped harmonics?

  • Thanks a bunch. That was very helpful

  • великолепно!!!

  • thank u thank u thank...never could quite figure out this due to lack of close up.

  • thnx a million !! i learned it pretty fast !!:DD

  • wow... best explanation of this that ive found so far. Nice work man :)

  • Cool lesson

  • I like harmonics a lot. It's like magic on your guitar, and it sounds beautiful. But it's quite hard to get the hang of it for me. Well keep practicing. The thing with Justin is that he NEVER leaves any details unnoticed. His lessons are complete and upmost detailed.

  • Great video and thanks.

I thought every note Tommy was hitting was a harmonic. It's half the notes.

    I feel better now.

  • @punishr36

I just had a panic attack and feel worse cause I dont even know what you are talking about.

  • excellent teacher ...!

  • great lesson thanks

  • reminds me of zelda!! haha

  • Is it possible to play this without pluging in your acoustic guitar?

  • yup!

  • Yes, of course. Now if you want 200 people to hear your harp harmonics, then you'll need to plug it in. :)

  • Yes, definitely.

You need a good guitar with good acoustics.

  • Very helpful indeed, thanks a lot!

  • wow man that was one of the most beautiful thing i saw on guitar thank you so much

  • dude you are a great teacher!!

    very cool lessons..

  • Great lesson..

  • Idk why but i cant do it by pressing down lightly on the fret, i pluck with my thumb just like him, but i use my index finger on the side of the string, plus i dont move my index really i just pluck with my thumb and that causes my index to sort of bounce of the string. Dont push against the string enough to make it move just enough that you index finger is pressed against it. Hopefully that helps anyone thats having trouble.

  • tom-ai-to tom-a-to

  • Why is the sound hole covered?

  • to keep the blood inside

  • We often use sound hole covers to reduce/prevent feedback; which is a common issue with amplified acoustic guitars. It's an especially big problem with guitars such as Justin's Messiah in this video, or my own 808 Artist as they both have condenser microphones inside the sound hole to compliment the piezo pickup.

  • Thanks man very helpful.

  • Great, great lesson. I've been wanting to learn this for years but like you say, other tutorials have gone too fast and as a result right over my head! Thanks a million.

  • sound great at the beginning

  • what have you got tattooed on your arm justin?!?

  • looks like a broken arrow to me ._.

  • duude this is awsome!!! ive always wanted to learn how to do this! props :)

  • haha i love doing these.

  • great lesson, inspiring, this thing is awesome:)

  • Really great lesson - interesting technique!

    Enjoyed watching :).

    Best wishes,

    Joey @ TC

  • 7:36 Pentatonic Scale?

  • Almost

  • Very good video!

This will definitely spice up my playing :)

  • first saw Andy Summers doing this in the early 80's, it still makes my brain hurt. I have to practice this stuff, you can find all sorts of places to add this technique, no matter what genre you play.

  • For a more advanced lesson as yo said in the beginning, you should teach how to play Drifting by Andy Mckee.

  • COOL THNX A LOT

  • Thank you my friend. Very very appreciated. I do find that Tommy goes fast and his book on Solo Guitar is either impossible to find or worth a fortune.

  • why did'nt i think of using my thumb... i used to use my pinky for this technique...great video...

  • lol i tried to use a pick!

  • thx man this vid is awsome

  • Thanks a lot, that really improved my technique.

  • incredible lesson.

  • lol, sounds like zelda music to me

  • i can picture a garden with waterfalls and little fish swimming in the ponds...

haha thats what it sounds like

  • nop, thats what it sounds when you're on drugs :P

  • maestro!!!

  • you can also play harmonics 5 and 7 frets above the notes.

  • 12 gets you the base note

  • Hey Justin, I play for a pretty long time now, but I didn't know about this technique. I'd wish your excellent lessons had been around when I was a kid. Cheers.

  • @kerkvader What tuning is this? 'Standard'?

  • @kerkvader I've been playing for only four months now, so I'm sorta lucky on that part, but at least you found the guy. I mean, he's giving complete, accurate and easy to understand techniques on very tricky things, and for anybody willing to learn (including those who can't afford/don't have the time for lessons).

And to the 17 Justin Bieber fans who disliked this video... *insert mean comment here*

  • whats with the headgear justin???? :s

  • lol, its gangster...

  • haha u have a mark on ur middle finger, i guess its from a ring, ur married or engaged!

  • It's a haaaaaard technique...

  • Great!

I've always wondered how that works since I saw Andy Summers (the Police) doing it on songs like "Every Breath You Take" or "Message In A Bottle".

    Thanks!

  • until :16 i thought it was like a Final Fantasy tune

  • Can you do it with a pick and index finger? Or only fingerstyle?

  • Crystal clear. The best explanation of the technique that I've ever seen. SUPERB.

  • Wow, I've been sturggling to learn this technique! Thanks

  • Justin,Wonderful lesson!!!! I'm abit of an Old Man and I've been trying to play from 11 years old...I've never been aware of this???? You are a giant for sharing all you know so Freely!!!!! Thank You Sir,,,Gerald

i hav found some other people guitar lesson but which is not helpin at all...

the way u teach us is very easily 2 understand

  • Nicely done! Thanks for sharing with us.

  • Beautiful technique, and ASTONISHINGLY AWESOME hat!

  • Real, Real, Real ... you are so kind to share with your fellow musicians ... grateful for Justin ....

    Donnie ...

  • Amazing guy! A real human being. I like how he teaches. His lessons are free, but I had no problem donating. He definitely deserves it.

  • reminds me of lenny breau

  • Loads of thanks for your efforts Justin :) you're the best.....this technique is wonderful but it's kinda tough though...needs alot of practice....

  • why dont you just tap the frets like Van Halen?

  • because its not a tapping technique, its a harmonic technique, you know like ph, which zakk wylde uses, and squeals like dimebag use, are all because of harmonics. there are many forms of tapping as well, but that would be in a different lesson.

  • i was just saying theres an easyer way to do it

  • But this isn't tapping in the slightest.

  • i know but you do get similar effect from just tapping the fret and that's y i said what i said

  • But in tapping you're playing the note of the fret you're tapping, in harmonics the notes is usually higher than the fret it is over, for example, the harmonic on th
