  • Valid, schmalid....whatever! Thanks for posting! This helped me "get it" and feel less intimidated to begin learning this gorgeous instrument!

  • fingerhorn4 reveiw all 138000 of them

  • Once again, another Expert Village video with bad information.

  • when im dead i want to play rock, cant do that with a harp

  • You're cute. . . I like your hair.

  • Арфы Сamac в России

  • why is it that all expert village videos are crappy, uneducated videos?

  • i learnt so much from this, thanks.

  • i believe Flute and Harp is the first instrument on the worldddddd !

  • OMFG!! to tune must be a bitch xD

  • @Koolikoo Lawl... i was about to comment the same exact thing xD

  • those who state that this man is wrong for sharing his wisom of the harp may need to stop playing their own harp not everyone can afford private lesson and most people who are called to play the harp is connected to elements in some way dont hate give thanks i like what he said each to the own haters

  • Thanks alot... it really is useful :)

  • Carol Mukhalian changed the way I play guitar.

  • And I may not know much aboot harps, but he's got some rocking facial hair. Just saying.

  • That must be such a bitch to string....

  • this harp sounds flat...is it just the recording?

  • This will take like 2 years to tune..

  • mediocrevillage

  • step 1:

    buy a $ 1,000 instrument.

  • BBBBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

  • are you john lennon?

  • um i think i'll be off by saying that but.. a guy playing the harp .. isn't a little gay!

  • @3M00RI No, it isn't :). Yeah, the basic idea when people think of it is Greek or Northern women playing the harp for entertainment of lords or at festivals, but...for example, look at Apollo, and maybe Pan! You can find guys playing the harp in even ancient stuff.

  • i dunno, from what i hear in comments of this channel's videos, these expert village 'experts' don't really teach things that are considered to be standard in their respective fields. same for the concert/irish flute video

  • @chansherly212 You're right, I've seen some about crafting, cross-stitch and Wicca, and while they're not necessarily wrong all the time, they're just really mediocre.

  • Through everyones comments or corrections I haven't read the single person mention the most important detail a harp is capable of...

    Harps can summon Unicorns.

  • @danvancool

Hehehe! That really made me smile

  • i saw another guy from the same channel TRYING to teach cello, both are shitty

  • I like the harp it is interesting but I also love piano

  • i could teach myself how to play this.i just need a harp

  • I am a piano player, is the harp anything like it? could I pick it up easier?

  • @sirchristian12 its like the piano if you know notes, so it should be easy for you

  • @sirchristian12 Once you know where the strings are, I'm sure it would be relatively straight forward. There would be a few techniques to learn, as with any instrument but I wouldn't expect it to be difficult.

  • this is retarded son of a bitch

  • Hi welcome to expert village. Today I'm gunna teach you the harp. Ok the first step is eating eggs lots of eggs imported from my farm. Next watch me waste your time telling you more uninteresting, uninformative, and inaccurate things so you will give up. Also the current president in bill clinton. I like men. (Lesson ends...)

  • Im happy my Coach didnt teach me this way or I would of never learned...

  • You look like John Lennon's son. I hate that copy cat fucker.

  • lol people don't know how to turn off the cc.

  • how am i supposed to learn if i cant even see you play?

  • OH Forget it!!

I'll go elsewhere to find this stuff out!

There are plenty of other vids out there that'll explain this stuff without obscuring it with cruddy narration of what is being said!!!

I see you've posted other vids! ... I wont even bother with trying them out!!!

  • Yep! It'd be really nice to see what you're talking about rather than just a transcription of what you're saying ( Hmmm! I can already hear what you're saying!!! )

I MAY AS WELL BE LISTENING TO THIS ON THE RADIO!!! ... It really is that useful!!!

  • this is a video for all the people that just randomly go out and buy a harp and wanna learn how to play it lol

  • Is he retarded?

  • gay

  • Expertvillage sucks bawlz.... bawwhhhhhllllzzz.....

Sure, whatever, they can play instruments.

They can't teach though, and that's what their youtube channel is supposed to be for.

  • he kinda looks like john lennon (:

  • @MrRedneck12345 He does o.o

  • expert village has NEVER put out a decent video, what were you dumbasses expecting when you came here. i knew it was gonna be shit.

  • @ibanezxiphos700 I honestly don't understand why they even try. Why teach if you're teaching the wrong things??

  • He took 3 minutes to say that this red string... is half the length of this red string... *face palm*

  • If there was a social services equivalent for harps, I would report this man to them.

  • fail... fuck expert village!

  • good fr the beginners,thanks,useful

  • dumbass village much

  • I dont mean to sound like a smartass, but I think everyone knows the strings get shorter towards the top.

  • 100% percent WRONG!

  • the harp makes me get a huge boner!

  • Great... Had to know that... Really.

  • this is exactly what i was looking for, i totally wanted to know the lengths of strings THANKS.

  • I tell my students that it's the mass of the vibrating object, along with the amount of tension, that determines pitch. Mass and frequency being somewhat inversely proportional, all other factors being equal. Only when you have a string of the same width, material and tension, will the "half-the-length-twice-the-frequency" rule work. Thus harmonics. Any questions?

  • My mistake!

a string of the same pitch one octave above is not strictly half of the length of the string an octave below. I did not mention string diameter in my account, and my understanding of how string diameter compensates for what i guess is utilised for instrument design convenience and playability is rudimentary at best. Anyone have the answers on this?

    myspace,com/jessesparhawk

And I'm down for some raw vegan apple pie...

  • Very interesting thank you so much for the info make sure you post up more...i might end up buying a harp LOL

  • Having taken lessons for three years, about seven years ago, I had hoped to find something to help me get back into it. Unfortunately, the top response for "harp" seems to be misinformed at best, and utterly wrong at worst. I suggest you research some, and try again.

    Best regards,

    Elizabeth

  • I also like pie. Apple is the best :-P

  • Comment removed

  • OMG yes, mmm Applepie...

  • @redrubberyboots Hi, who doesn't?

  • thanks im56 male wantig to play saving few pennies now and agian towards harp like yourcamac how much would they run cashcool9

  • I'm sure your intentions are sincere but you really shouldn't be teaching things which are plainly wrong. An octave string on a harp is NOT exactly, or anywhere near, half the length. Relative pitch is dependent on length AND tension and gauge of the string. Your other videos are also dubious as to the techniques you are putting across. Unsound tuition can promote bad habits. I think you need to review all of your videos and examine whether your lessons are valid.

  • Well, actually, all other things being equal, (string diameter, string material, etc. ) the octave string would be exactly half the length. Actually, this whole discussion of length vs. pitch is more suited to the pipe organ than it is to the harp.

  • I'm more worried by his curled fingers... not good for the sound or the hand!

  • It is not so bad as you think. I am a harpist for 11 years. And in Moscow all harpists play C-C with curled 2-d and 3-d fingers. it does not metter. I am sorry for my English.

  • It is seriously bad for the tension in the hand, and usually makes a bad sound.. I am spaking of curling the fingers high when playing 1-4.. nor keeping the finger round into the hand

  • Yes, anyone with only an average ability to measure by sight can see that he is telling nonsense.

  • No, that's physically how strings work. When you cut a string to half the length, you get an octave. He's telling the truth.

  • No, because he is talking about a harp. The strings of a harp do not have the same diameter. The lowest string is thicker than the top most treble.

Take a monochord and you get an octave by 1:2, a fifth by 2:3 &c.

  • My mistake. I wasn't aware that their diameters varied.

  • The diameter is not so easy to see in the video, but you can also tell from the actual lengths of strings an octave apart.

  • do you even know how to measure pitch... didn't think so by you're unintelligent comment... sonof444

  • [to: JoeEllis1026] Did you read the tread?

And can you explain what you think to be unintelligent?

  • it is unintelligent to make assumptions about pitch... i happen to know that pitch is measurred by vibrations per second, maybe if you knew that it would all make sense

  • Pitch IS measured in vibrations per second (Hertz). But length, tension & diameter cause the amplitude & frequency of vibration, resulting in pitch.

Take a string & keep the tension steady. By means of shortening it you cause different pitches. Put a bridge under the string at half its length, the remaining part produces the octave to the original string-length.

This is how guitars, violins &c. work. This fact has been known to Pythagoras and is still valid in the modern science of accoustics.

  • @fingerhorn4 I've noticed that nearly ALL the expertvillage videos I have seen- the people have NO clue what they are doing XD

  • @fingerhorn4 woooowww u are SMART lol + good in describing the correct posture and way of the harp. DOUBLE THUMBS UP !!! [ if i coud ] haha(=

  • @fingerhorn4 It's EV, they never get it right.

  • @fingerhorn4 Yes i play a lot of instruments, and i understand what your saying here, but this is mostly for people who dont really understand anything about music.. they might learn the wrong way at first but they will catch on.. no need to be hating XD

  • @fingerhorn4 You think because you used a lot of fancy words there, that you are right? Idiot. This man is teaching one of the many types of ways to play the harp, there are also many different types of harps, each with a different playing style. Do not critisize on something you don't know, therefore, shutup.

  • @GloryRave1 no I didn't use fancy words and there is no difference in basic technique between different harps. I do know what I'm talking about so I'm afraid I won't shut up. Harps have the same principle of relative tuning no matter what type. I know the poster is trying to be helpful but he is not giving information that is reliable.

  • @fingerhorn4 Just leave the man in peace. Whoever choses to take his lessons can. If you don't want to then that's fine. Do you play the harp? [:

  • @xXblackXbutterflyXxx Happy to leave the man in peace. I'm sure he is sincere. For example of how to play the harp properly, see videos of Xavier de Maistre and a host of really good, professional players who know how to do it!

  • @fingerhorn4 OKAY mister scientist!!!

  • @fingerhorn4 better idea...anyone who thinks that they can learn harp by watching a youtube video needs to review their life and examine whether or not they might want to pay for an actual lesson!

  • @fingerhorn4 lol not trying to hate or anything but why are u here???xDDD i find it funny that in a tutorial video people that come to see them end up saying the tutes are wrong ahaha

  • shame he's wrong about the length of the strings

  • What kind of Harp is that?? I want that exact harp. Please tell me. Thanks!

  • This harp is a Camac Korrigan.

  • dubble amaaaazing!
