if you earned the penny, it should be yours, but here's the thing. It takes about 2 cents to coin every penny. It's due to inflation that the melt value of a penny is greater than the face value. But the gov wants to keep minting pennies to keep up the illusion that our money hasn't lost its value. And the gov doesn't want anyone to profit from this practice.

it is, but i doubt they would go after someone for 1 penny. It would cost lot more for the police wages and the facility.
And you probably used more money in fuel that you would get from the penny anyway

zinc melts at around 780 degrees F not 1000
if its a pure copper penny its 1900 degrees
