Lyrically he writes from emotion; what he's felling at that time. Hole in the Earth is written at a time he was unsatisfied with his relationships. He does talk about and explain the meaning of a few of his songs in interviews: you'll have to look for them...

@starrkwolf718 He added so much depth to their sound and pushed them in all sorts of directions. Their sound was only half as good without Delgado, If I were to make a personal "best of" Deftones mix of like 18-20 songs only three or four pre-Delgado tracks (Adrenaline and around the fur) would make it; lifter, fireal, MX, can't even breathe.

I wish Chino was less hit or miss on his live performances. Only thing I've ever disliked about this band. Otherwise, I love the absolute shit out of nearly everything they've done.
look at chino and the bassist at the end. he reacts to the end of the song by clapping.... then chino gives a look out to the bassist and the bassist looks forward ignoring chinos glance. I interpret this as a confirmation that were aware they preformed poorly on a broadcast of NBC's squid like tentacles - which is a huge part of promoting ones album these days. I still love this performance as a testament of how genius they were in their prime.
Finally after 11 years of waiting.. they r finally coming to SINGAPORE!!! CANT FUCKING WAIT!! The Deftones are too underratedman. they deserve better...

umm so im a fiarly big deftones fan, and chino is by no means the worst live vocalist...but ive never seen him give a performance as well as he does on record. thats something most truly amazing musicians CAN do, just sayin.

@weathervanesmusic I agree 100% and Deftones are my second favorite band. They're by no means bad live but Chino seems to lack effort most nights. This is pretty damn good though. They're great overall though love em forever.

Do you sing???? If you actually do know how to sing properly you would know how hard this is to do for so long, especially in his range he sings in between intervals at times something which no other (American) popular recording artist has ever done.
@jahkoz internet arguing 101: dont assume. i know how to sing. i also know that singing in between intervals (which is improper terminology, he sings "off key" but in a desired way, similar to jazz musicians being offkey) does not ruin your vocal chords, that would be the screaming. but screaming ruins ur vocal strength, not necessarily your ability to hit the correct note. nothing you said justifies chinos bad vocal performances, where he cant come close to hitting notes he does on cd.

god, listening to this live version i wasn't sure if he was gonna be able to hit that note but he did pretty well. it sounds amazing to the point of "vocal godliness" on the recording

@soullessking Well even the weight not withstanding. I don't mind a heavy guitar so long as it sustains well and sounds good which the SGs and the LesPauls for that matter DO NOT. If you play any remotely heavy music, all they fucking do is feedback live. Why someone would pay several thousand dollars for one of those pieces of shit is beyond me.

i was just nick picking on the small stuff... but yeah...I played my friends once... and... honestly...only thing i liked was the feel of the frets and the wood they used for it... thats it... it sounds like complete shit to me... and another friend was just playing around... didn't change any settings... and just started picking up feed back... which I like feed back... just not annoying, constant feedback...

You have to take into consideration that Chino is also playing guitar (w/o messing that up) while trying to sing those high notes.

There is a large group of people who refuse to believe that Chino is not very good live. I love Deftones but anyone with any objectivity can watch a few videos as say "yikes!"

umm so im a fiarly big deftones fan, and chino is by no means the worst live vocalist...but ive never seen him give a performance as well as he does on record. thats something most truly amazing musicians CAN do, just sayin.
this song would have to be my fav off white pony though.

@weathervanesmusic look up stuff they performed at bizarre fest 98 on here his vocals are awsome...you have to remember chino suffered a strep throat which caused a lot of problems for a long time on that tour

@weathervanesmusic I agree 100% and Deftones are my second favorite band. They're by no means bad live but Chino seems to lack effort most nights. This is pretty damn good though. They're great overall though love em forever.

@blues3531 i know right? great band. not bad live at all, but chinos not great. to these guys giving me videos to look at, ive seen vids where chinos good, but ive seen alot of videos where hes bad, more often than not. great live bands are great because their ALWAYS great, deftones are not ALWAYS great live... dont let your love for a band turn u into a fanboy and blind u of any weaknesses, because chino clearly isnt a standout live vocalist.

Do you sing???? If you actually do know how to sing properly you would know how hard this is to do for so long, especially in his range he sings in between intervals at times something which no other (American) popular recording artist has ever done.

@jahkoz internet arguing 101: dont assume. i know how to sing. i also know that singing in between intervals (which is improper terminology, he sings "off key" but in a desired way, similar to jazz musicians being offkey) does not ruin your vocal chords, that would be the screaming. but screaming ruins ur vocal strength, not necessarily your ability to hit the correct note. nothing you said justifies chinos bad vocal performances, where he cant come close to hitting notes he does on cd.

@weathervanesmusic in the studio. It is nearly impossible to recreate a performance to a perfect T pitch, melody, timbre, and overall tonal wise, not to mention over 10 years of live singing. If you can name an artist that can duplicate that live ver batum every night let me know cause that is not humanly possible. I watched your videos, who the fuck are you to criticize somebody who dedicated their entire life to music and are now a rock star.

@jahkoz when did i say theres artists that sing absolutely perfectly every night? i didnt. so stop being bad at argument. but there are lots of bands who perform much better live than the deftones, particularly singers to chino. and id rather be a high horse critic who views things objectively to find truth than a fanboy. most music lovers would.

You would have to research every performance live of an artist to make a conclusion as to their overall performance which is impossible so you will not be able to view that mattter objectively to find truth.

Journalism, and scientific method have absolutely nothing to do at ALL with music and the frequencies which are emitted to create a tangable recorded product which is called music.
