  • whats that little stack?

  • @ longroadpro My condolinces to you and the Dr's family. I didnt know he passed away when I posted my previous comments, I didnt watch pt.1 until now and saw his born/died dates.I appologize if I opened any wounds.

  • R.I.P. Doctor... Well what happened his truck ??

  • @tutkal2010 Dr. Bill's trucks were sold in 2005 to a member of the American Truck Historical Society I believe.

  • @longroadpro thanks for your info ...greetings from Istanbul

  • So he has a 15 Speed (5 speed main box with a three speed auxiliary) but he is shifting it like a 9 speed. Is that correct?

  • @bulldog0046 It was a long time ago that I shot this footage, but there wasn't much weight on the trailer that day, so he might have been starting out in second in the main and first in the splitter, or the other way around.

He might also be skipping a combination that only gains a couple of hundred rpm's.

Bill did a video with me some years later on Trucks with 2 Sticks.

  • Just curious, what is he a doctor of? Medical, science? Just wondering- But that man should have a doctorite in driving!!!! Id sell my soul to see him (or any of the Old Pros) take that truck to any DMV for a road test w/ some punk-ass instructor- just to see if they have the gaul to tell him- "You did this wrong, you did that wrong..." God bless the Old Pros- We miss them, and we need them back!

  • @lugger2010 Dr. Bill was a dentist in Aspen Colorado. He put himself through medical school in the 50's driving tractor trailers. He passed away in 2005 from cancer.

I was proud to call Bill my friend.

  • the shot of the truck with the snow coverd mountins in back is a beautiful picture.

  • @MrJackalbot

Thanks for the kind words. I saw that scene on our way out through Hotchkiss and made sure I had the shot framed up on our way back.

  • nicely done..awesome docucomentary of the ol girl

  • He is a damn good driver!!!

  • Man God bless this man!!! he had an excellent talent driving that truck!! just thinking about shifting 2 handles gives me the jitters, yet this man does it like its child's play!! did u saw what that suv driver did in front of the truck??? what a brainless idiot!!!

  • Beautiful video and commentary by "Doc". I just wish he checked his drag-link or steering box adjustments. Something is either worn or way out of adjustment. His steering wheel is all over the place...he works more with the steering wheel than the sticks. I've driven a few like that...no fun...not to mention unsafe. Bless him...what a great hobby he had!

  • Superb truck!

What does Dr. Bill mean at 2:12 with "You can visit"?

Am I right in thinking that the range of the brownie box overlaps a gear step of the main box, if you understand what I mean?

  • I am happy to see that people are looking at Dr. Bill as the trucker and out there trucking. Becase as you see at the begining of Part 2, the year he was born and the year he passed away. These are the real trucks. Trucks today with sleepers are more like motorhomes pulling a trailer.

  • What a nice truck ,a great restoration .

  • Dr. Bill is a real trucker.

  • Man trucking has sure died or at least not the way it used to be. Now days you drive plastic hot wheels compared to these hot rods! :)

  • Nice work, Dr. Bill. I only saw you scratch one and I think that was at 7:40 or there about. I remember riding with my father years ago when he was driving the old B model with the 5x3 and next to you, he was one of the best I've seen...go through them all and never scratch a one. I drove trailer for 29 years and had just a few miles on a 5x4 and was just getting used to it when I had to go back to a 5spd. Was 5th in the main box, up or back in this truck?

    God Bless,

    Jeff

  • Great vid!!! Dr. Bill is awesome!! He the kinda guy who you learn something new from every time you talk. Beautiful truck too, sounds great!

  • Dr. Bill is a great guy. He died of heart failure though. What the viewers are seeing with those splits are called "Slap shifts". They are good for when you are traveling upgrade, but as he said you only get 200 RPM out of it.

  • The portion 'round 5.48 cracks me up!

I would fail miserably with those gear changes, and I've been driving for years.

  • @mickflyuk The guy in my '55 W71 Mack part 2 on YouTube said he kept watching that video of Dr.Bill until he got it down.

  • Believe me, I don't think I could learn even if I watched either guy for a month!

I've only just come across your clips and your website, the youtube videos are amazing and a great taster for your full DVD's.

I may buy some at a later date, but they do seem excellent value.

  • @mickflyuk Another ATHS member, Ed Kite, states that one thing that is simple to remember when splitting. Upshifts are always first, and downshifts are always second. Dr. Bill stated in ths movie "Trucks with 2 Sticks" the reason why you don't shift into 5th gear with your axle in low range that you are really going into a lower gear rather than a higher gear.
