Awesome song and a good performance by everyone involved. I always liked Ray's vocals on COS. Too bad the only person who really had fun on this stage was the drummer...
This is a wonderful tune - with a lot of the Genesis elements fans love. A lot of the CAS album is about separation, and there's no song that personifies this them like TMBSOW. The instrumental tells a tale of a relationship inside the song itself - of highs and lows, of love and sorrow, of together and alone. Brilliant.
Ray's voice, as nice as it sounds, falls flat. It is boring and forgettable. Even Rutherford and Banks said that he didn't have the ability to bring an intensity to the songs. Even when Ray is hitting the high notes at the end it just doesn't have it. Plus the song writing was just a little lacking. I am probably one of the biggest Genesis fans in the world. I played guitar in a well established Genesis tribute band so I can speak with some authority. I'm glad they quit while they were behind.
@steev11 As a fan who doesn't play in a band, I can speak with some authority. ;) IMO, Ray was just fine. He brought a certain edge which was needed, and it fit the music and these lyrics. Given time they would have come into their own, but Ray trying to fill Phil's shoes was worse than Phil trying to fill Peter's. Ray was taking the place of a legend, in a legendary band. The tragedy is they seemed to think they weren't as good without Phil, which is bollocks. They had this.
It's too bad that Genesis with Ray never caught on. Now, I'm as big of a mainstream Collins Genesis fan as they come, but Ray brought something new and interesting to Genesis, and I too wish they could have continued with him. I even wish he had been in the Carpet Crawlers 1999 remake like he was told he'd get to do. I love Ray Wilson, and CAS is my fav non-Collins album. I'd buy his albums if they were available in Canada. RIP what coulda been a great Genesis era, 1996-1998
If only they extended the string synth part between the two rounds of keyboard solos more on the studio version... the fact that it's slightly longer adds to the anticipation and the classic "shivers up the spine" effect. That keyboard solo is not only epic, it's on fire.
Thanks for putting this one up. CAS kind of got a bum rap, in my opinion. This track, the title track, and "One Man's Fool" (especially that one) are pretty great songs, and there are plenty of other good moments on that album.
I'd say Steve got the raw deal. He had been in the band almost from the beginning and couldn't get support for many of his songs. He left before the band turned to the method of writing albums by improvising in the studio, so he lost out there. Ray Wilson, on the other hand, got a great opportunity ... with two big sets of shoes to fill.
@HilbertSpace I say that's pure conjecture, about Steve. It sure didn't hurt him to leave the band. I think it depends on when one talks to him as to what he says about it. I don't think anyone got a raw deal myself, I think if Tony and Mike decided they shouldn't continue with Ray, then that was their call to make. I can understand why they did it. It's a shame, because this album has some brilliance to it. I'd of liked them to continue a bit longer.
LOVE THAT FILL @ 4:21-22 Nir Z does it just like the album and again @ 5:54-55...Genesis is renowned for faithful sound and song repro live. This is Tony's fault
Do appreciate the attempt to do prog again, but if you go that route, you need somebody better than Mike on guitar. Mike you're a great bass player, can't you just be happy with that?
I like this song, "If that's what you need" and the title track from CAS. Wilson's voice works for this material and the Gabriel songs on this concert. Unfortunately it did not work fo the Collins songs
True..all the stuff from CAS and Gabriel era works. Collins put so much of his own personality to the performance...no one can get even close Phil in terms of emotion. No doubt Phil is the best singer for genesis.
it could has blossomed into something great this lineup, but Tony + Mike didnt have the heart- theyd been to the top before and musical styles had changed- maybe they decided it wasnt worth it anymore- they had other goals to pursue
a great shame and loss in my opinion- song of the songs arent the greatest, but this is a good song- especially the music
I totally, utterly agree with awcindy and awesomedude, Steve wuold've given the magic of being a TRASCENDENT album, in their music and composition, although Ray made a very good job within his singing style, fans were expecting more from the two virtuosos Tony and Mike, unfortunately, the lack of musicianship in the album is quite evident, nice album though, but I definetly need mooo cowbell! I mean, I NEED MOOO HACKETT, GABRIEL AND COLLINS BABY!
Great song! But it would have been better with Phil Collins or Peter Gabriel. I have got the album: Calling all stations. Not bad but this is much better: We can't dance (with Phil). This was a great band with everyone. I miss them!
More than missing Phil or Peter, I'm missing Steve Hackett on the Calling All Stations album. We know neither Phil nor Peter wanted anything to do with the band at this point, but if you're going to give prog another shot, why not bring back Steve?
I don't think Steve would have agreed to do this album with them given the opportunity but I will agree if he did, that would only add awesomeness.I did overall enjoy this album and thought they should have went on with Ray. Maybe they should have done when Queen did and called the band Genesis+Ray Wilson.
theres no much left to say, we have said it once and say it all again. To think we should come to this, it could never be the same....(greeaat lyricss!!)
I give Tony, Mike, and Ray credit for making the effort and trying to break new artistic ground. They took a big gamble and lost, but at least they tried. It wasn't like they were trying to get rich here. They did it because they are craftsmen who enjoy playing and writing music, and they wanted to start fresh.
They played a good deal of fresh material on this tour and gave the old hits an alternate interpretation.
Man... I have such mixed feelings watching this. I'm just sad that this version of Genesis went-out with a whimper... mediocer songs and poor ticket sales. I bet they had a really good album waiting to happen. Oh well. Thanks for posting this! It does make me wanna pull out Calling All Stations again.
Thank you so much for posting this. I have never heard this song live before. I wish I have had the opportunity to see the 1998 Genesis set up live - but the cancelled Denmark due to lack of ticket sale. I love Tony's solo on this song.
I'm a GENESIS fan and I can't remember there ever being a reason for me to just play one particular part of the video over and over again except for Mr. Banks' solo...FREAKING GREATNESS!!!
They really should have done "The Dividing Line". I bet that song would have sounded fantastic live. Otherwise, this is a great song with a fantastic solo from the master, Tony Banks. =]
They actually did The Dividing Line in almost every show. There's a full concert from 1998 with Ray Wilson that is floating around on aries and limewire that you could find that has the Dividing Line in it.
They've done it in Poland a few days before. It was amazing version with guitar battle at the beginning, great drum solo and amazing guitar solo by Anthony Drennan at the end. I've posted it. Enjoy :)

Once I got past comparing Ray to Phil I
really enjoyed this album. I thought it was
better than Phil's last studio album with
Genesis in 1991.
