You are all wrong. Season 4's musical score was probably the worst in the series. The hands down winner was season 2 and I'm baffled why you cant find it on YouTube.
Love this song, but one thing I don't understand: why did they pick a song about jesus and the devil for The Wire?
I'm just starting season 4 now, and so far religion doesn't really play a big part in the series...or am I missing something huge?? (i'm european so, I guess that might be it)
@Serpico69, it makes a lot of sense when you stop and think about the musical genre being used and the gritty, urban feel of the show along with the themese of the show. It's actually perfect for the show.
Great show, to really understand it, I think I'll have to watch it again and catch up on the bits I missed or slipped through my concentration and lack thereof.
Being from Australia, I will say that at times I had to have the subtitles on to keep up with the strong accents. I believe they touched on the strong Baltimore accents in early commentary tracks. Like the Sopranos, the more I watched it, the more I loved it. Seen all 86 episodes 4 times so far, in a few months I'll be up to 5.
@miles2057 Can anyone here tell me about other great HBO TV shows or shows in general. I'm from Australia & find HBO make great shows. My favorites,so far are,The Sopranos, 6 Feet Under, Oz,The Wire.
What are Rome and deadwood like? Oh, I also love Curb Your Enthusiasm. A huge Seinfeld fan, seen every episode countless times over the years.
I'd appreciate if anyone can point me into the direction of some great American TV shows, on HBO or in general.
@miles2057, What I saw of Rome I liked, but I only saw like the first three episodes. Deadwood is good, it's just slower paced than shows like Sopranos or The Wire. I am a fan of True Blood and Bored to Death. I absolutely loved Boardwalk Empire, which was their newest one. Great American TV is a huge topic, but a few shows I am into right now, in no particular order: -Justified -Mad Men -Modern Family -Breaking Bad -Archer -Burn Notice -Psych -White Collar -The Killing
@jdlund Cool as ,I asked those questions 4 months ago, thanks heaps. I appreciate it.
I am currently watching, Oz for the 3rd time, man, that show started a lot of actors off on tv and film. I'm up to season 2 of Deadwood, which is good, you are right that it's a little slower than other HBO shows.
I am also watching Curb Your Enthusiasm for the countless number of time. I'm a Seinfeld fan and it's great to see Larry David in action. It is a hilarious show. I heard Boardwalk Empire is great.
The deepest, most complicated, most beautifully-written show of all-time. It explains nothing, makes you think, and stresses you out. It's written like a great novel and should be considered as one of the greatest artist works of the 21st century (in TV, film, and literature).
@intheburgh3 You know you're watching a hell of a show, and one of humanity's greatest artistic achievements, when a Nobel laureate (Mario Vargas Llosa, literature) has called it "devilishly entertaining" and said it's up there with Dickens' and Dumas' greatest works.
@1Telllan This is but a pale imitation of the great Waits. Decent cover I guess, but that's all it is, a cover, a copy. The live version off Big Time is my personal favourite. Captures that fiery televangelist fervor.
When you go and purchase ANYTHING....YOU KEEP IT GOING....WHEN YOU watch TV you keep it going..when you go to school, you keep it going...when you VoTE you keep it going. THESE ARE THINGS NONE OF US CAN ESCAPE so it keeps on GOING AND GOING AND GOING.....
our lives are lies. we live in denial and lies. Things in which we all cannot escape. The wire shows you why its impossible to escape and how everybody living plays their part in keeping it going.
The 4th season of The Wire was hands down the best season of the entire series but the intro for this season was the worst one! the intros to Seasons 1.2,3,5 were masterful!
@Irobinson86 I like the opening for season 4 because its gritty and shows the effect this so called war on drugs have on children FORCED to deal with it...too young inexperienced and poor to escape it.....omg! If you guys only knew who's behind alla this corruption ( and its even worse outside the states because most countries can't afford to start programs to help this group). To end corruption and greed you have to destroy these elements: POLITICS, FINANCE AND COMMERCE. nobody wants to
@tenparab Believe it or not, the singers are not women...the reason their voices sound like that is because it's a middle school band, which the creators of the Wire chose to fit in with the theme of the school system and the middle schoolers being the protagonists of Season 4. The name of the band is DoMaJe. That's all I know, peace out.
There are comments on all 5 openings saying how this series had the best opening track. I think that goes to show that they were all good, just all different. Different people have different tastes. I enjoyed them all.
I know it's cliche for me to say this but.... Best.Opening.Ever! Season 4s opening credits are the best of the series.
By the way, I'm INSANELY jealous of those who are just now starting to watch or have not yet seen the series. Oh to be in their shoes again, a true Wire virgin, untouched and unaware (yet) of it's greatness.
@urbanr0cker i was lil wen my moma wus watchin dis (like 5 wen it came out) i used to watch lil snipets wen my mom would watch it but now dat direct tv i showin it from season 1 i can really understand it now.
@alanjohnpeel -- But in Season 5 opener, there's another kid who throws at the light and misses. Feels like a "they don't make 'em like Bodie any more" thing to me.
Love the way this Season's opening montage basically tells the story: that generations in these types of environments are doomed to struggle with the same problems of prior generations & it all turns into one big vicious, unforgiving cycle. it's sad b/c u know in real life, some kids really don't get even a basic fair boost 2 a good life that others do. like Nas said, "life is like a dice game."
This is by far the best intro out of all the intros and the best season out of all the seasons. The lyrics are sung beautifully, the child actors are unbelievably good, and the story told in this season is the most important one told.
I can't believe people think season 2 is the best - but I know its just mostly white people saying that since they can only relate to other white people.
I don't know how anyone, black or white, could watch season 2 and not feel some connection to the Sobotkas, any more than you could watch season 4 and not have a connection with the kids.
@chowfun18 Season 2 wasn't my favorite but it was probably the most important b/c it establishes the fact the problems being experienced by the underclass in Season 1 weren't based on race. the white working class in Season 2 was starting 2 get hit by the same problems as the poor blacks b/c the system was broken & their problems weren't being addressed.
That's why this show was so good. The star can disappear for an entire season and the show remains amazing. Imagine the sopranos if Tony disappeared for an entire season
I have to disagree with you on this one. This is by far my least-favorite version of the theme song. Waits' is easily the best (and it's his original version), followed by the versions from seasons five and one.
When walk thru the garden, Watch your back,Well I beg your pardon Walk the straight and narrow track If you walk with Jesus Save your soul Got to keep the DEVIL down in the hole He's got fire and the fury at his command No, you don't got to worry Hold onto Jesus hand Will be safe from SATAN When the thunder ROLLS Cut,you got to keep the devil down in the hole, Will be safe from SATAN
no, they stopped at five (2002-2008). though i'd argue with Johns Hopkins becoming the city's No. 1 employer, they probably could've told the story of the "middle class" using Season 6 2 explain more of the life of the average professional/college-educated adult & how they experience BMore.
Season 4's opening credits are the only ones that I never, ever fast forwarded through, although I love season 1's as well. The part when it shows Snoop's silhouette at the playground with that guitar chord playing in the background still gives me chills.
@LSBS777: The first 3 Seasons were okay but Season 4 was the Shit because it was a Deep Vocal and I know I felt a Shiver when I watched and heard DoMaje sing this because it brought back memories from Bmore. Season 5's was okay but it was weak compared to Season 4
season 4 was the best. but season 1 and 3 are right up there too.. season's 2 and 5 lags behind.. i aint really like the whole newspaper angle in season 5 or the Port angle in season 2.. but u gotta watch all of it from beginning to end to see how great of a show the wire was
Oh man, David Simon and co were NEVER going to top season 4. Absolutely heartbreaking season and The Wire at it's best. That's no exaggeration. The only one that challenges it is season 1, but even then..man...season 4 = Vintage Wire.
i occasionally watched the Wire in previous seasons and in seasons 5 and 6 but i was truly hooked when i saw the first episode of season 4 [[season 4 was truly the best season -- i hope they bring it back to tell the continuation of the kids stories]]
Why thank you. I ain't seen season 5 yet so know very little about it, but i've heard it's a good if not one of the weakest seasons of the series. But it's The Wire so i'm sure its still miles ahead of anything that contemporary television has the offer. :)
Season four was my favorite season and this is my favorite opening theme. The beginning right before the main title comes on screen throws a chill up my spine every time.
The time when avon and string were on top, the themes had old school feels, but s4 theme is hiphop and r&b-like with marlo on top. just shows things were going to be different, for the worse.
When i listen to this theme, i become a lil down cuz i immediately think of the end of the avon/stringer era, and the beginning of the terror of marlo.
agreed. i think it was an intended metaphor. when u listen 2 the song lyrics, and they're talking about "keeping the devil down in the hole" just as the circle image comes on screen ... i took it like they were emphasizing in this kinda environment, it's an ongoing, never-ending challenge 2 keep the devil down in the hole.
Fantastic observation, yo. Love the opening theme of this season the most. It's just very fitting considering the themes of season 4. Still ain't seen season 5 yet, and can't wait.
This season is the grimest... cuz i think this SE4 really gave insight on how it is to grow up in that part of Baltimore... All the focus on the kids truly fascinated me... real issues... real people... real quality TV... The Wire will live on for ages on DVD no doubt...
by far the best version! the only season where i wouldnt fast forward through the intro song. my favorite character hands down was bubz...he was a junkie but he had a good heart. i was always so afraid something bad was going to happen to him...i was so happy when the series ended with him being sober
Best bit in season four when Bodie get's shot. Class set up! Brilliant programme, all season are so well written and acted. Watch out for Generation Kill
The song fits this season perfectly, has quite an eerie and foreboding sound; I still get a tingle of excitement when I hear it - followed by disappointment when I remember there is no episode of The Wire starting :-(
In my opinion the order of best is 1- Series 4 2- Series 2 3- Series 1 4- Series 3 5- Series 5 My order of the best series though is 1-Series 1 2- Series 4 3- Series 2 4-Series 3 5- series 5
for jd williams its like the song fit the mood, like a symbol for the end of an era for bodie, and michael k too, as this was the beginnin of his demise.
Best season ever and this is all the best opening music. Gives me chills whenever it comes on.

Totally dude.

The time when avon and string were on top, the themes had old school feels, but s4 theme is hiphop and r&b-like with marlo on top. just shows things were going to be different, for the worse.
jontray87 2 years ago 3
When i listen to this theme, i become a lil down cuz i immediately think of the end of the avon/stringer era, and the beginning of the terror of marlo.

this was my favorite season of all

Grandissima serie!
gabil45 2 years ago
agreed. i think it was an intended metaphor. when u listen 2 the song lyrics, and they're talking about "keeping the devil down in the hole" just as the circle image comes on screen ... i took it like they were emphasizing in this kinda environment, it's an ongoing, never-ending challenge 2 keep the devil down in the hole.
htownhomie06 2 years ago 3
Yo anyone notice that from 1:16 circular objects are shown, do you think something is being depected by the producers,
im guessin that are trapped in a cycle and cant get out of the horrors of street crime.
xeryms 2 years ago 7
woooow...i didnt even notice that.good point!!!

The Wire will live on for ages on DVD no doubt...

dominusi 2 years ago 4
by far the best version! the only season where i wouldnt fast forward through the intro song. my favorite character hands down was bubz...he was a junkie but he had a good heart. i was always so afraid something bad was going to happen to him...i was so happy when the series ended with him being sober
lawngirl 2 years ago
definitely best version, yo.

The song fits this season perfectly, has quite an eerie and foreboding sound; I still get a tingle of excitement when I hear it - followed by disappointment when I remember there is no episode of The Wire starting :-(

I didn't like the theme song for season 4 straight off, thought it was some trashy RnB outfit.
But how mistaken was I.
Season Four, the most powerful and influential of the seasons had for its theme a perfect partner.
A group of Baltimore teens giving a unique perspective on Tom Waits tail of redemption.
How fitting it was when observing the whole five seasons that no child from that season finds their redemption,or adult for that matter.

I get chilly on "down in tha hole" and michael k and (especially)jd williams' name come on screen at the same time.
jontray87 3 years ago
Why exactly? Are those fools dead in real life or something?
RevVic 3 years ago
for jd williams its like the song fit the mood, like a symbol for the end of an era for bodie, and michael k too, as this was the beginnin of his demise.

best openings were 1,3,4 defnitly
