@richard42960 Nokie played bass with the Ventures only for the first couple of years during the early days, he was then switched to lead and played for more than 30 years, despite replaced temporary by Jerry McGee from late-60's to early-70's, he was then returned and played for a couple more decades. Most of the famous Ventures hits after 1962 were mostly played by Nokie. But I think playing bass wasn't really wasting his talent as he's always superb on both bass and lead^_^.
@richard42960 "how did he get stuck playing the bass with the ventures?"
I think Bogle & Wilson started the band, playing lead and rhythm, and Nokie was hired to take the position left over -- bass. After a few years, as I heard it, Nokie suggested, diplomatically, that they might do better if he took the lead since he was better ... and they agreed, of course. It's rare when common sense triumphs over ego in the R&R business, and it's a real credit to Bogle & WIlson.
His guitar is ideally suited for this country music. Just with he'd go back to a Fender or Mosrite when playing surf tho. This Hitch hiker although awesome, just ain't no all in one guitar. But he's still the best no matter what he plays with..
THE VENTURES are my all time favorite group in the world!! I had the blessing of seeing NOKIE EDWARDS play this song Live in Booneville, Arkansas at the Mosrite Factory. He is the best!
The man still has the best fingers in the business, at 73 years old! Every note, and there is lot of them, clean as a whistle. My favorite finger picker.
There is and will always be only ONE Nokie. His playing is ageless, innovative, and enchanting. He captures your musical soul. I am one of tens of thousands whose musical life was set in motion by Nokie's "sound" back in the '60's. He is an American icon!
