ok but the original is so much better. little effort goes into making these tracks. the instrumentals are simple loops, made in a few minutes or so. the rest is sampled. nonetheless, billie makes the track good. she has a great voice. listen to her originals, the music complements her vocals much better.
This is a nice song, kinda sounds like dub, little bit of classical, 50's maybe? With a smathering of classy breakbeat/ trance. Pretty sad though though.

It's fun...The really original gloomy sunday (which has been made by Rezső Seress) is on youtube, like a fucking parody. Like: The hungaryan suicide song. ( its because a lot of hungarian people commited suicide hearing that.) Youtubers make a fucking joke out of hungarians. But without this country, there would be no version of this song, neither this whole album, by venetian snares. I like this version too by the way.
@keddenator Hungarians besides their current politics are one of the best nations that I've met and their culture is so great. I've been cycling cross Budapest and around Balaton for 17 day last year and it's been my best summer ever. I think I completely understand Venetian Snares about how he felt there.
RIP original artist, committing suicide in 1968 this track was banned from radio stations all over the world, people felt at the time of this release that it was the cause of a flood of suicides and suicide attempts. Beautiful song though, it's on my all time top favorites list.
So weird how the two pieces of music just mix so well. I love the violin or whatever it is (I'm not an instrumental genius obviously). And Billie Holiday's voice seems really ghostly and perfect for the whole mood.
Pure insult to a great artist like Billy Holiday...you can`t do justice to the African-american experience, which Billy`s music is so incredibly bound by...did you come from an unfathomable and unspeakable racist oppression...I don`t think so and your overdub just proves it. Please leave Billy alone!!!!!
I don't think he was trying to sound racist. He chose Gloomy Sunday to add to the mood of the album itself, (What works more for a melancholy album than a song famous for causing suicides?) most likely picking Holiday's version for the vocals because it was the English version he liked best. Whether he butchered a song as an excuse to show off or made it enjoyable to a different audience is up for debate, but this is not.
Although seriously, how did you reach that conclusion?
@anibax oh no. damn i found this pearl on a sunday and spent the whole day listening to this on replay... hadn't slept in 3 days and was in a pretty dark mood but on monday morning i felt like i was born again (maybe it was because i finally slept)

@nechillo Aaron Funk was paid by his record label to go travelling and find inspiration for a new album, so he basically got shit faced for 6 months, when he was in hungary he just chanced upon this hungarian composer and thought "fuck it that'll do" turns out that was a genius decision because this album is a master peice

@nechillo
