In fact, there are still christian cultures on earth that stone people and there are "barbaric" cultures that are Jewish based too. We don't hear about them as much simply because islam and their various cultures are in the news regularly due to wars. People could hear reports from some christian cultures and draw the same conclusions as yourself with islam.

To (most) atheists, it's a book that represents oppression, threats of eternal damnation and lack of progress. As is the Bible. I understand we need to be empathetic, but why is it always the religious, and specifically Muslims of late, that we talk about understanding or respecting?

Although this particular pastor is just burning it based on angry tribalism, and I do not support him, I do think there are valid reasons to burn religious books. It is not like burning academic books or taboo novels to me. I'd never support a total removal of any book from being read, but I do think religious books need to be less respected (and believed, but that's another topic)
Burning the Koran is only going to add fuel to the tension that already exists, it is not going to help in any way, shape or form, it's ridiculous to think that anything positive will come out of it.
