2. No superpower has stood without an economic base to back up its military. The US likes to boast they "beat" the USSR... in fact oil prices dropped and the USSR simply went bankrupt.

1) Nukes actually have a relatively short shelf-life. They need to be maintained, overhauled, and have its parts replaced due to age and decay. We haven't built a new nuke in over 10 years, and we do all testing these days via computers (which is nothing like a real test out in the middle of an empty desert).

2) That, and Reagan's surge in military growth forced the USSR to try and keep up...and they couldn't. So yes, I think our capitalist system 'beating' their communist system is accurate.

The US keeps 3.000 warheads on hair-trigger alert, with another 2.000 on reserve in case there are spare parts needed. The older nuclear weapons may need to be refurbished, hence the reserve (if a warhead is taken in for refurbishment, another is moved to a higher state of readiness).
