In slo mo you can see the hammer drop three times but you only hear two shots,so I think Hollywood cheated and sped up the draw.Look very closely at the hammer. It drops three times and only two shots are heard. In regular speed you can't tell it but slo mo shows the truth.
@profsat5 actually i watch more carefully you will see/hear that the sound of the shots, the reason being that like many shows back then the sound of the real shots were replaced the another in editing.
It is actually three shots fired as the mozambique drill.
Jim Zubiena was actually an accomplished IPSC shooter back then.
@profsat5 look at other quick draw videos theres one i watched called the quickest draw in the world you hear 2 shots yet 3 targets are shot then in slow mo its shown that its so fast that you cant hear the last shot
The thing I don't get about the Mozambique drill is when you should use the drill. See if you think about it the two shots to the sternum may cause the armed target to twitch his fingers and shoot you back. Sure I would Mozambique a target that didn't have a gun pointed directly at me or at a farther distance than this video. If he was five to 15 feet from me like in this video I'd shoot him as many times in the head as possible to disable his brain stem.
@IMFDB I've been a Navy security policeman for half my career and you can bet we did a lot of practical pistol, shotgun and rifle work.
In a stressful and fast-moving shooting you're doing pretty well to hit the bad guy at all. Look at all these officer-involved shootings where 30-40 rounds are fired and the BG gets hit, maybe 5-10 times.
The head is way too small and mobile a target to go for at first. 'Anchor' the BG with 2 center of mass shots then go for the head if necessary.
The pelvis structurally supports the body. Damage to the pelvic bone is likely to destroy a BG's ability to stand or move, preventing any meaningful resistance,
This guy is definitely a PRO. Notice how he jerks the shotgun sharply forward with each shot to get that extra little projectile velocity to ensure a kill. :-)
Jim Zubiena was a real champion practical competition shooter in the 1980's. Story was, they intended to film him and speed it up. Zubiena, as with all high-level competition shooters, was good enough that camera tricks were not needed.
@flasher555 Was "Stingray" (1978) a Michael Mann film? It starred the lovely & talented Sherry Jackson as a female vigilante/hitwoman. Was Mann even directing films back in those days?
@TonySmallz That might explain why the flick was hardly noticed. Kind of a cheesy movie although Sherry shines above everybody else. If MM directed it that film would've been a cult classic for sure.
Really? MM has been directing films since the 60's? Didn't know that one. Thanks.
@mikeyjsc You're absolutely hilarious. The static mafia stereotype stops and looks at him, "kinda shades ah doze??", and the argentinian just gives him that loopy grin. I fell back right along with that cop<{-D
Not necessarily. If you put on earplugs deep enough into the canal and they are not a color that will grab attention, other people may not immediately notice you are wearing them.
The other factor: the hair of the hitman may have been long enough to conceal enough of the ear to hide the plugs.
As for the glasses, that can be explained by the fact that it was the 80s.
People in that time did wear glasses with lenses and frames of unusual colors, including yellow. However, yellow and orange lens sunglasses are still available.
@Watcher3223 Well have it your way. But even in the '80's if my limo driver opened my door wearing ear plugs and shooting glasses, I'm thinking something aint right.
Maybe. But again, it's possible for the earplugs to not have been noticed.
As for the glasses, again, yellow lenses on aviator frames do not necessarily mean they're safety glasses.
And, some actual sunglasses can double as safety glasses, such as the Gargoyles Classic worn by Arnold Schwarzenegger in "The Terminator," which are ANSI rated as safety glasses.
I believe you were being serious, rather than facetious, in trying to point out inconsistencies in a fictional scenario that was more realistic than typical of movies and television and has more plausibility than trying to make bullets curve against the laws of physics ala "Wanted" or a porcelain Glock ala "Die Hard 2."
@Watcher3223 You believed wrong. But Other than Zubiena's draw, there is not a whole lot that is realistic about this scenario. It's still just a tv show.
@BTeamHooligan "You believed wrong. But Other than Zubiena's draw, there is not a whole lot that is realistic about this scenario. It's still just a tv show."
"More realistic than typical" doesn't imply complete realism, but you must admit that it is more realistic than the typical overdrawn Hollywood gun battle.
@Watcher3223 And for the time, Miami Vice was "more" realistic than other cop/crime shows before it, but still nowhere near the realm of reality. Michael Mann is known for his more realistic portrayals of gun fights in his movies. But there is still a great deal of theatrics involved in them. He definitely loves the 2-3 ft. muzzle flashes.
That is NOT the Weaver stance! This is not Jeff Cooper's "Modern Technique" either. Finally, this is not a Mozambique drill either. This is a controlled pair from an isosceles stance. It's what professional shooters and serious tactical pistol shooters have been doing for years. Weaver and Cooper are good but it's time to move on.
i remember this episode back in the day as a teen. i didn't know anything about tactics at that time but thought how the hell did he draw his weapon so fast!
When I first saw this episode in 1985, I was impressed with the rapidity in which "The Argentinian" hitman drew his weapon and popped that third guy. One of my favorite scenes in Miami Vice!
What the hell is Switech doing with his pants down on the stakeout. He could have backed his buddy up if he wasn't playing with himself. Now he has to watch the video where his partner gets get schooled in the quick draw in slow motion, over and over again.
I've never seen anyone fire a shotgun like that. His form with that 1911 is impeccable, but the way he fires that SPAS-12 looks so...impractical? I don't know. Considering he seems to be a professional shooter, I'd assume there is some method to his madness. Anyone care to explain?
Well the SPAS-12 is autoloading, so need to have a hand in the pump position. The reason why he does it like that is probably just because he needs to withdrawal the gun from the car without it being seen and thats just how he ended up holding it. At that distance, accuracy wasn't a concern, so no need to adopt a new stance. It isn't practical, but under the situation was efficient.
if you'll look closely, the shotgun never fires. it's just him acting as if it did (and the window exploding with some sfx). i suspect the gun is a non-firing replica.
The Shotgun scene is just some of producer Michael Mann's visual hollywood fluff(was the 1980's) ..The Pistol scene is really why Zubiena(an IPSC Pistol Champion) was cast ;)
This Scene has also been used in police academies and firearms training..to show recruits/newbies how fast things can happen if they take their eye off the ball ..err so to speak :)
Isn't "efficient under the situation" pretty much the definition of practical? The method may not have been "orthodox", but the result proved it practical nevertheless.
I recall in an interview Jim said that he just wanted to figure out some way to utilize the folding hook, because it was otherwise useless.
I read somewhere that the reason he did this was because the SPAS12 is really painful to shoot with the stock down. It is also used to prevent the muzzle of the shotgun from climbing.
It seems believeable because the folding stock is all metal with no cushioning at all.
There were some folks that talked to him about that, seems that he was doing the standard rack and show clear that is post ipsc habit and Mann liked it and left it in the take. Least thats what I heard several years ago. Mann usually picked from the best to show a particular skill in a guest start or one time actor.
looks like the third shot was a malfunc. maybe that's why he removed the mag and racked the slide in the end. there were only two muzzle flashes. but that guy's got skill.
the third shot simply appeared between frames, when the camera shutter was closed. You can see some sparks. About the removing of the clip and emptying the chamber, I guess PointyShinyBurning has a point. He doesn't want to be shot in the back with it by someone. Though the other guy's revolver was there too...
I had watched this video a few times before but never noticed the cable they use to yank the stunt guy backwards when he gets shot. Look at the line coming out of his pants leg!
That cable isn't a jerk rig line -- it's probably for triggering the squibs that simulate the gunshot hits. You can see a similar cable in Heat (also a Michael Mann work), when McAuley (DeNiro) shoots Van Zant (the money launderer).
the soundtrack of the double tap Zubiana did wasn't even close to the actual speed of the two shots. normally a double tap like that is around 0.25 second at the fastest. The sound was nowhere near 0.25.
I'm sure out of a tuned 1911, he gets closer to .1 seconds between shots. I'm no GM, and I get .16s out of an M&P. You're right though, the sound was off.

Matter of fact if you really want to drop a BG you might want to go for the pelvic area.
