But He continued to tell us to pray for each other, to pray for our enemies, to love thy neighbor, turn the other cheek. So feed samwisegingy what we should, the Word of Truth! We are asked to "seek and save" the lost, to carry out what Jesus started. AMEN

"I speak in parables so that though seeing they will not see, and hearing they will not hear". Truth is revealed to those who have a heart to receive it. Societies that reject science tend to go backward while societies that embrace science tend to go forward. In order to subordinate your reason to faith you have to shrink your reason, thus Christians become unreasonable people.

@SamWiseGingy Let me explain this passage for you :-) the Psalms are what? simple, MAN speaking to God and expressing to God both worship/praise and prayer. This verse is by who? King David, so it is through the eyes of King David. Why was he wrong? Because he didn't know much about the sun. why didn't God correct it? Because it's David's song to God, not God's song for David.
Lastly does David believe God has made a "tent" for the sun? Don't be silly, it's a literary tool
You say the Psalmist knew more about the nature of the sun then he let on. You have studied other ancient literature and you know that to be a fact or do you just suppose because of you bias toward the Bible?
What you need is something from the Bible that expresses some more advanced understanding of cosmology. But as far as I know there is nothing.

Well Nan it may come as surprise to you but most people in that day did believe exactly that. Geocentricism was the common view and the idea that the earth a sphere suspended in space by gravity/inertia was not part of their cosmology.
Why do you presume that the authors of the Bible had the same cosmology as you do?

@SamWiseGingy This verse is complex because it is in the most complex book of the Bible. To understand Revelation you need to know the other 65 books of the Bible to a very high degree. In particular the books of the OT. It is deliberate so that people like you who hate Christians can't understand.
when it was written John was exiled, he wrote this for the believers, who knew their scriptures and doctrine of Christ, so that they would understand and those who were opposed to them would not.
The point is that this is a false representation of the physical universe. For this metaphor to word the stars have to be small and the earth has to be big. That was the view in ancient times and Bible is written with in that view. Now if you has a Bible verse that express knowledge of the stars relative to earth that would help your case but I know of none.

They are angels, they are not stars so why would they need to be a representation of the universe??? Actually the passage has a double impact, it relates to the tempting of 1/3rd of the Angels specifically, but to John it showed the power of the Dragon (Lucifer) as he observed the vision. Why are you literally stating it?
The word stars doesn't mean stars. Okay if you say so. Words have no meaning in the Bible.
The problem with this is you are not considering the ancient cosmologies commonly held at the year 100 ce.
You are reluctant to accept the word stars as stars because you have a better understanding of the relative size of stars and distances relative to earth, they didn't.

It is not a 21st century take it is the same understanding of the passage for the last 1,900 years. Look, the Bible has been understood for thousands of years, if you took the time to study using resources by scholars who have studied individual words in their original meaning and setting for decades. looking at the original purpose of writing for decades, you will see where you have eared.
The Bible has been whatever the Church wanted the Bible to be from the beginning of the faith.
It means whatever the person reading it wants it to mean. It is impossible to have a reasoned discourse about the Bible because there is no agreement on how to interpret it.
That is in part the reason why Christians are so irrational because they are obligated in some way to an ancient holy book.
The Book of Revelation SAYS the woman, the dragon and the stars are symbolic. There is plenty of STATED symbolism in the Bible. The "Beast" comes from the book of Daniel where it is stated he is symbolic. You shouldn't discuss things you don't know about.

What are you talking about? Look, the bottom line here is that taking Revelation literally simply means to believe that John was shown a vision, because that is all the Bible states happened. There are various interpretations of what that vision could mean, just as there are various interpretations of visions in Daniel, Ezekiel etc. What it means to read Ezekiel literally is to believe that he was taken to Heaven and shown things, not that those things must mean this or that .
Every work of literature has the marks of its time. The Bible is no exception. Therefore the cosmology of ancient time is included in the text. This passage is a prime example. Now if the Bible actually had some decent science in it that would lend credibility to its claims of divine inspiration/origin, but as it is the Bible is just another ancient book of superstitions and myths.
@SamWiseGingy Dragons = enemy of God's people. In this occasion Lucifer, not a dragon but a fallen angel. 7 heads is a symbol of universal wisdom (7 is important in the bible) 10 horns is a symbol of great power. So Lucifer is an enemy of God's people with great wisdom and power.
But to summerise this secction it is the same as the Gospels, Mt, Mk, Lk, Jn. The giving of a Messiah, the deliverence of His people and the defeat of the enemy of God and His people.

Hey everyone, let's not argue. Jesus taught in the sinagogues for a reason, cause people were hungry for a saviour. If people are content just being and one day dying, let it be. Know when they start question, than god can move.
Pray for all the negative coments, and if god is faithful, he will reveal himself to them (just as he did it to me) not by bible bashing.Bottom line, if god/jesus are NOT real we are all going to rotten in a few years, but if they are real, well...

Sometimes the author John expresses confusion or ignorance about what he is seeing, other times he asks God about things and God tells him it is not for him to know. Other things God informs him are symbolic. The book is intentionally mysterious.

Kant, Hegel, Nietzche, Freud, Mahiavelli, Marx, Engels, Darwin, and many more. I always tried to find the best arguments to deny GOD.. I doubt that SamWise is like this. Most of these guys are everyday pseudo-intellectuals, bitter people who just use these videos as an outlet. Genuine intellectuals are on other types of videos (and forums) where they can actually face a formidable challenge, instead of debating the average 17 year old Christian kid which is the profile of the person who usually frequents these type of videos.
He could be on a vid with Dan Dennet, but I think it's over his head.

Just letting you know that, disbelief is sin. Sin does not please God. Remember sin is what separates us from God. It is the curse of “nothingness”, “emptiness”, “desolation”; “isolation” which man subjected himself to in the beginning. In fact God hates sin, He despises it. Faith is the substance (the underlying basis) of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Do you have faith? Do you believe Jesus died for you? Hebrews 11:1. Believing in God is not about reasoning it’s about simply believing that He exists, it’s about faith, belief in the unseen, not unknown but unseen.

@susieQ128 Here's the problem. Almost every statement the Bible makes about the earth and the heavens is wrong in a scientific sense. Therefore Christians generally reject science. Societies that reject science tend to go backward while societies that embrace science tend to go forward. In order to subordinate your reason to faith you have to shrink your reason, thus Christians become unreasonable people.

My thesis is that Christians are not rational. If I find a rational Christian that is a Christian that hold their faith/religion without compromising their reason then my thesis is wrong.
So I am doing my due diligence and looking for a rational Christian. Haven't found one yet, but I'll keep looking.

@SamWiseGingy Let me explain this passage for you :-) the Psalms are what? simple, MAN speaking to God and expressing to God both worship/praise and prayer. This verse is by who? King David, so it is through the eyes of King David. Why was he wrong? Because he didn't know much about the sun. why didn't God correct it? Because it's David's song to God, not God's song for David.
Lastly does David believe God has made a "tent" for the sun? Don't be silly, it's a literary tool

You say the Psalmist knew more about the nature of the sun then he let on. You have studied other ancient literature and you know that to be a fact or do you just suppose because of you bias toward the Bible?
What you need is something from the Bible that expresses some more advanced understanding of cosmology. But as far as I know there is nothing.
Thus my original statement that nearly all representation of the physical world are just plain wrong.

Well Nan it may come as surprise to you but most people in that day did believe exactly that. Geocentricism was the common view and the idea that the earth a sphere suspended in space by gravity/inertia was not part of their cosmology.
Why do you presume that the authors of the Bible had the same cosmology as you do?

Even if it allowed that this dragon is metaphorical how could anyone with a modern understanding of the relative distance and size of stars make such a metaphor.

@SamWiseGingy This verse is complex because it is in the most complex book of the Bible. To understand Revelation you need to know the other 65 books of the Bible to a very high degree. In particular the books of the OT. It is deliberate so that people like you who hate Christians can't understand.
when it was written John was exiled, he wrote this for the believers, who knew their scriptures and doctrine of Christ, so that they would understand and those who were opposed to them would not.

The point is that this is a false representation of the physical universe. For this metaphor to word the stars have to be small and the earth has to be big. That was the view in ancient times and Bible is written with in that view. Now if you has a Bible verse that express knowledge of the stars relative to earth that would help your case but I know of none.

@SamWiseGingy Sorry, word limits inhibit the impartation of the verse. It is not trying to represent the physical universe, in fact the "stars" are not stars at all! They are angels, they are not stars so why would they need to be a representation of the universe??? Actually the passage has a double impact, it relates to the tempting of 1/3rd of the Angels specifically, but to John it showed the power of the Dragon (Lucifer) as he observed the vision. Why are you literally stating it?

The problem with this is you are not considering the ancient cosmologies commonly held at the year 100 ce.
You are reluctant to accept the word stars as stars because you have a better understanding of the relative size of stars and distances relative to earth, they didn't.

It is not a 21st century take it is the same understanding of the passage for the last 1,900 years. The dragon was never a dragon, the woman wasn't even a woman, the horns are not horns, the heads are not heads. It isn't a poem, it isn't a historical account but it is an apocalyptic letter. why read it any different than how it was written?

The Bible has been whatever the Church wanted the Bible to be from the beginning of the faith.
It means whatever the person reading it wants it to mean. It is impossible to have a reasoned discourse about the Bible because there is no agreement on how to interpret it.
That is in part the reason why Christians are so irrational because they are obligated in some way to an ancient holy book.

The Book of Revelation SAYS the woman, the dragon and the stars are symbolic. There is plenty of STATED symbolism in the Bible. The "Beast" comes from the book of Daniel where it is stated he is symbolic. You shouldn't discuss things you don't know about.
You should also get a life. I have seen your comments everywhere, from Amy Grant videos from 25 years ago, to these modern Jesus Culture videos.

What are you talking about? Look, the bottom line here is that taking Revelation literally simply means to believe that John was shown a vision, because that is all the Bible states happened. There are various interpretations of what that vision could mean, just as there are various interpretations of visions in Daniel, Ezekiel etc. What it means to read Ezekiel literally is to believe that he was taken to Heaven and shown things, not that those things must mean this or that .

Every work of literature has the marks of its time. The Bible is no exception. Therefore the cosmology of ancient time is included in the text. This passage is a prime example. Now if the Bible actually had some decent science in it that would lend credibility to its claims of divine inspiration/origin, but as it is the Bible is just another ancient book of superstitions and myths.

@SamWiseGingy Dragons = enemy of God's people. In this occasion Lucifer, not a dragon but a fallen angel. 7 heads is a symbol of universal wisdom (7 is important in the bible) 10 horns is a symbol of great power. So Lucifer is an enemy of God's people with great wisdom and power.
But to summerise this secction it is the same as the Gospels, Mt, Mk, Lk, Jn. The giving of a Messiah, the deliverence of His people and the defeat of the enemy of God and His people.
