(spoiler alert)!!!!! here's a fun fact every one sephiroth did and did not kill aerith should i explain? okay sephiroth was killed(well mortally wounded) right after he burn down clouds home and was thrown into the life stream but instead of fading into it he learns form it and starts making a new body inside a crystal and does not get waken up till cloud gives him the black materia the sephiroth we see till then is jonova's headless body being controlled by sephiroth sheer will power!

I like how people keep on claiming that Phoenix Downs won't work on Aeris just because she was killed was far different from being "KOed" in a battle, completely forgetting all about the SPELLS OF DEATH anyone can use.

Unless you're assuming that getting your spirit taken from your body and having it banished simply knocks it out, is far less severe than a sword to your gut.

@kaihedgie I imagine it was more that she died so instantaneously. It's generally implied death spells put you in what was essentially near-death state... okay let me put it in D&D terms. When your HP gets to below 0 (0 being unconscious), you're dying. Every round (six seconds), you lose a hit point until you get to -10, at which point you're *dead.* Imagine, then, if something hit you so hard you went from 0 HP straight to -10 and beyond -- instant death. That is what Sephiroth did to Aerith.

I've always thought FF7 was an overrated game in terms of how its quality was perceived (it was a decent game at best, definitely not good, great, or legendary) although it is one of the most important/impactful games of the 90s. That being said, this specific scene remains to date the best in all of video game history, as far as I'm concerned. I remember when I originally saw it, as a 16 year old, getting legitmately angry over this. If entertainment is to inspire emotion, Square won.
