Ben is worlds better than his teacher in echolocation, but that little stick and a few tricks would open his navigation skills up a whole lot, but to Ben, that stick means dependence, and Ben cannot accept being something less than excellent.

He's too smart, but everyone, even those with sight, need a little help.

That kid is (was, sadly) a genius. I think the teacher needed to also learn from Ben and respect Ben's remarkable ability, then Ben would've responded in kind.
