@dragnarxx I have seen amazing pictures coming out of the d40. MOST photographers would consider my d200 to be an 'amateur' camera... and you, comparing the d40 to the d200 are just doing the same! :-) The skill is your hand and eye... the hardware just helps make up for any lack of it!
That said, I have *also* seen really great work coming out of D90's. What you need depends on what you're shooting. Do you need fps? hight iso? full-frame? bit-depth? RAW recovery? GPS? old-lense compat?
