Thanks for the Bass drum lesson. It is right on time as it seems the bass drum is one of my weaker areas. I will be practicing the slide technique with enthusiasm.
Hey Max! This video is insightful! I tried playing grooves on my kit combining both the "press" and the "instant release" of the batter. the "press" sounds a bit boxy, but, in my subjective terms, it is advantageous in giving other instruments room for the spotlight. Thank you so much for teaching well, I hope you keep inspiring drummers, specially the young ones! God bless you!
Thanks for the technique Max. Here is a heel toe technique if you care to check it out. "Art Cruz how to heel toe and Chest And Horns!!!!" What can i do to improve my groove playing?
Very helpfull. Sounds ridiculous: Talk about the shoes you use. What sort of sole you are using? Some play barefooted some with socks. some with boxing shoes...
Your videos always turn out great, Max. Loved the technique for getting 3 and 4 hits in a row. I'm totally going to practice that now! It's funny, it's such a simple thing, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone address before in any videos I've seen. Thanks, again. Very helpful.
Hi Max. Thanks for posting. I'm a fan of your smooth, relaxed approach to teaching. It's interesting how our bodies figure out how to handle the task at hand, or at foot in this case. :) Cheers!
Great video Max! Helpful as always. I have a question; it's something I rarely see addressed in drum videos: What are some of your techniques for setting up the bass drum pedal itself? I always feel like i'm wasting energy trying to play faster doubles and I often wonder if it has anything to do with how I have the tension on my pedal set-up. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you.
@RichB1979 Good question. Start with a very loose tension and play a little bit and keep tightening the tension in small increments all the while playing between every time you tighten the tension. See where it's the most comfortable and effortless for you to play. Also try the same thing with different bass drum beater heights, angle of the bass drum , head tension. Experiment.
And I forgot to ask, because I have problems with controlling the beater's rebound at faster tempos, what did you practice for that? It's hard not to press beater to the head while playing faster double strokes.
@LOLE1991KOVIN Ya, I know what you mean. I dig the beater into the head when playing fast double strokes all in a row.Though only on the second double. The first note is a rebound and the second has no choice but to be dug into the head.Your foot doesn't have time to rest in between 1 set of doubles to the next.
@LOLE1991KOVIN Hey There, I don't think it causes any problems for me. It feels comfortable . I was surprised too when I saw the angle while watching the vid but it feels natural when I play it.
Hey Max, how come you have the beater attachment back to front? Just curious as your beater strikes the drum at quite an extreme angle compared to a more conventional set up.
@JackPollitt I have the felt part of the beater facing the head. It's just that it's almost all used up. Ya, the angle does look extreme when I saw it on the video . But it feels comfortable to me. Always try different set ups to see what feels the best to you. We all have our preferences and our bodies are all made differently.
thanx Max, you're a good teacher. Down to earth and straight to the point ;-) Thankx!
Love, Misha

Cool video! Do you have any problems playing the bass drum at this angle, it's a little strange angle for a bass drum?

@dimsunk That's cool, it wasn't a criticism, I just wondered if there was a technical reason why? You play great man.
