  • Tim, once again great tune, brilliant fiddle playing, but how in the world do you reach the G string?

  • fuckin brillant

    sounds so dark

  • Fine performance but don't forget Dock Boggs from the late 1920's.

  • As always, incredible.

  • What an exceptional artist he is...

  • Great tune! Do you remember how your fiddle was tuned?

  • How did you film this?

  • Damn dont mean to sound weird but you sound so much like my papaw but he was a dobro player. I listen to you on a bout daily basis. Sorry im prtty damn piss drunk thanks

  • Am i crazy but did you just play that song up in a tree? Sounded real good by the way. Liked it better than Ralph Stanley

  • @blueridger28 Yeah, I was a good ways up in a beech tree (where I spent most of my youth when I wasn't plugged in). I'm always humbled to be heard in the company of Dr. Stanley- I don't know that he's ever pretended to play a fiddle as I do but, dang, you should see his pink Caddy. One of these days...

  • fawkin brilliance!

  • That's lovely. The fiddle definitely adds a whole new dimension to this song, and it's wonderful.

  • Dude, I can't stop watching this. The fiddle adds a creepy vibe to an already creepy song. Also your voice and the scenery in the background adds a very nice touch. I had only heard this song on a promo for this show called Supernatural and you topped it with

    this performance, it was awesome!

  • I love country music, your performance of this song beats all I've seen. Including, Ralph Stanley.

  • So much better than Ralph Stanley. This isn't some fake money-making scheme that Stanley became over the years. Eriksen has some real heart.

  • you. are. awesome.

  • Sweet!

  • Fantastic stuff. I love the outdoor setting and the almost disonant tones of the fiddle.

  • Camper Van beethoven did an AWESOME version back in 1988

  • big change from grudge music

  • awesome, awesome!!!!!!

  • good job. gave me goosebumps. but its not as good as ralph stanley

  • Better than outstanding fiddle playing (in the genre). Good job on the tune, vocals and fiddle powerfully integrated.

    Thank you from Canada.

  • great version .. ive only heard it sung by ralph stanley

  • wow

  • Wow! I am speechless! Fantastic!

  • Do you have your bridge shaved?

  • I think it's lower than usual- I tried a different fiddle last summer and it seemed high.

  • fantastic.

  • Really nice! Thank you.

  • all your tunes are epic haha its a good narrative and it carries through

  • that was amazing well done

  • I love this very much!!!!

  • i like the version from The Songcatcher better

  • This is absolutely great. I live in WV on the southernmost tip, 'tween KY, VA, and the rest of this state. I think you'd dig the mix of traditions 'round here, 'specially the primitive baptist stuff. You have a good chop on the fiddle btw. Keep At it. Johnny

p.s. you oughtta record sugar baby with vocals next time and put it on, you know you could sing it :)

  • i rememer seeing you at a couple of sacred harp singing and at camp fasola

  • A true musician, thank you for posting up your performances up. It's great that you take the time out reply to your comments too. I want to buy some of your music. What should you recommend I start off with?

  • Thanks. I have a couple of solo CDs- the closest thing to the youtube stuff. That's about it for now, though I have a ton of stuff on the way...

  • awesome tim. Love your version and the Ralph Stanley one too!

  • whoaaaa. gives me the shivers, equal to the ralph stanley version if not better (and that really IS a compliment!) one of my favourite singers ever, shame cordelias dad arn't still going.

  • dude, do you have an album out yet?!!!!

  • God gifted talent! Just wondering how you "convert" a normal song, esp. my fav. "Go Rest High On That Mountain" (Vince Gill), how do you do that in the "shape note" fashion & would it still sound similiar?

  • that's an interesting question. Depending on the tune it might work with shape note style harmony. beyond that it's just a way of singing I guess.

  • Is that Arthur Rimbaud on yr shirt? Or some woman?

    --Curious in Oregon

  • Some woman ca. 1880. It's a band t-shirt I designed using a striking photo I found in a junk shop.

  • This is absolutely briljant!!

  • Thanks, that was gorgeous. I caught the Mountain Tour in NYC, but you are right, the venue was too big (Hammerstein or something like that). The evening before though, a bunch of the younger cats (Riley Baugus, Ollabelle, and some others; IIRC you were there, Tim) played that music at a small club called the Living Room, for about 20 of us. THAT was the right size venue!

  • Yeah, that was our "night off-" it was a great time though. Not long after that some friends started a Sacred Harp singing at the Living Room- check it out if you haven't already.

  • Thank you.

  • I always loved this song -- and I like your version better than Ralph Stanley's. :-)

  • fantastic!

  • Just had to post a another comment,I have been listening to this all day.

  • So you and Ralph Stanley were on tour together and I MISSED IT?!?!

  • It was a fun tour. The venues were mostly too big though- stadiums and things. The big exception was Red Rocks in CO, which is so pretty that the size doesn't matter.

  • Im from Kentucky, I've traveled quite a bit but I havent been west of the Mississippi. I've been to the Northeast, but only to NYC - which was nice but there's a lot more up there I'd like to check out.

Whats your ideal concert size? Big, small or somewhere in between?

  • Good one,you could probably start charging for these videos as they are super.

  • it was such a surprise/treat for me and my kids to hear you play Friendship that day . what a wonderful day on the mountain. did your friend hand you your fiddle after you climbed the tree? cool video thank you.

  • Excellent! Yeah, Ralph Stanley has an amazing voice too. "Nothing will satisfy me but your soul"--great line. Have you heard The Incredible String Band song "My Name Is Death"? And wow, you look high up at the end there.

  • Loved it.Great ending!
