-I'm glad I watched this. I would've been very upset w/ the ending if I read it. That ending is NOT satisfactory, and I can not STAND books (OR movies) with endings like that
I was in the US last months for 5 weeks road tripping down the east coast and through the south and I meant to read this book and I totally managed to forget!
So I haven't watched your video I'm afraid Peter, but will as soon as I actually read the novel!
I read that book so I could say I had. I don't quite agree with Truman Capote's assessment that it's " ...not writing, it's typing." But I see his point. Didn't leave that much of an impression.
@wolfganggangwolfe I have not. Nor have I read any Vonnegut. And I'd like to. Is there another Vonnegut book I should start with, or will that one do?
@thepeteris I started with that one, and I really enjoyed it, but I haven't read anything else by him. I haven't read On the Road, but what you said about it's plot may also be applied to a cat's Cradle, maybe...
@thepeteris As a huge Vonnegut fan, I can confirm that Cat's Cradle is a great, great, GREAT place to start. HOWEVER. If you are more into books that are plot-heavy, I was very impressed with The Sirens of Titan. That's the second book he wrote, and it's definitely in my top three. Also in my top three is Breakfast of Champions. My top three is Cat's Cradle, Breakfast of Champions, and Sirens of Titan, but I can't pick a favorite from them.
I felt the same way about david sedraris books. Just wasn't for me. I'm not sure if you will get much out of RDPD because you are aware of most of the concepts already... but i hope you you find something out of it.
I really enjoyed the book and it heavily influenced me as a teenager. So much that I led an almost nomadic lifestyle from 1999-2004, traveling and moving all over the Continental United States and Canada.
That being said, the observations you made are all very true. I don't think that there was a point to the book, except that he wanted to share these experiences that he had. It seems more of an overly long description of living the Beat Lifestyle than it was a story with a plot and stuff.
@tiffismyname Ha, really? I want to move around/travel more, but this book made me consider that a bit. I feel like it showed that type of life in such a negative light. They were just endlessly moving, and pursuing "something" but never really getting anywhere, and he was pretty miserable whenever he wasn't drunk/high. It's made me reconsider moving to a new city, and think that maybe I ought to stay put and find other ways to spice up my life.
Yes! I ultimately disliked On The Road because I like to be engrossed and forget I'm reading a book and stuff. I do remember there were some passages I marked as really well-written, and I found them to be the only worthwhile elements of the whole thing.
I remember I read that book, but recall nothing about it. I wonder if that says more about the book or my memory. I think the beats were just like any young group that thinks the world have got everything wrong and are rebelling for its own sake.
When I read it I remember thinking that it would be a great book to analyse, but it wasn't so great to read. I was surprised it had the hype it had. Apparently it was written in a drug fuelled frenzy over only a few days and you can totally see it.
@thepeteris Read the wikipedia article about the authors life. It's absolutely amazing. He had a much more interesting life than his fictional character!
I know that throughout the way you described it you seemed uninterested, but some reason, you made me want to read it, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to like it.
you remind me of comic book buy from the simpsons

This book is of the genre of "beat" writing, meaning that, yes, is a series of train of thought rather than a plot driven story.

@IwanttoliveinParis I'm pretty sure. There were many lengthy descriptions of Jazz bands.

You should read Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin...it's really well written and the plot is really well developed.
