one of the best perfomances ever. when marie , at the end, went in that carriage to de guillotine, miss shearer has a face so desvastating...she seems "out" of the world, rather smiling to the people...and it,s one of the most terrible moments in cinema. i admire very much miss shearer for giving, us, that special perfomance. she should win an oscar..that year. carlos
marion davies wrote that norma shearer showed up at a party at san simeon in that dress. they removed a door for her to enter and she needed four chairs in order to sit.
Saw last half of this on TCM 14 July. Probably not accurate, but very dramatic, and Shearer looks great even when she is starving. MGM planned to film this in Technicolor then decided against it on budget concerns. MGM would have spent (gasp) three million dollars to film in color. To think for a mere three million we could have seen all this in color.
