In 2008, I visited Hampton Court Palace and heard a ghostly moan in an empty room that I believe is in the Georgian section of the palace. At the time I heard the moan, It didn't occur to me that the noise may have been a ghost. I remember looking around the room to see where the noise may have come from but couldn't find anything that could have produced that sound. After visiting the haunted gallery, I began thinking that the sound may have been a ghost.
I'm from the USA and I LOVE English/UK history! The historical places in the UK are endless and I love it :) (don't get me wrong I still love my country!)
It always seems that those who don't believe are so dismissive of those of us who do! Almost like we're slightly mad for having such beliefs! It's an unknown quantity, pretty much like god.One can't prove the existence of god & in the same vein no-one has ever definitively proven the existence of ghosts, unless someone can prove otherwise. Surely it's a matter of personal belief! Oh,& I want Mr Packer's job! What a lucky man. HCP is on my list of 'things to do'.
@popazz1 Maybe that's because those that do cling to their beliefs in complete contradiction to the available evidence, and what makes sense. There's also a certain proportion of them who are of the opinion that that those that don't are lacking in some way, usually morally.
You make a valid point.I am actually a 'reformed catholic' and spent much of my early years following blindly the doctrine of that particular faith. We believed 'cause we were basically told that to not believe was a heinous sin.To even think about such things as 'ghosts' was anathema.I've experienced a number of inexplicable events throughout my life and, perhaps oddly, find it easier to accept these events than the existence of god! Maybe I am,indeed, immoral.
@spinmonkey4401 You don't pretend that there's a God. You either believe there is or you don't. You have made your opinion quite clear, but I really do think the Lord deserves more respect, real or not, then to be compared to such ridiculous myths.
When I went there... i walked down the walk way where one of henry's wifes walked before she was killed. as I walked down I felt someone behind me.. i looked behind me and no ones was there. then something grabbed my hand.
I'm a Tudorphile but the only way I'd every see a ghost there is if somebody donned one of Henry's bed sheets and ran past me. There are no ghosts, spirits, boogie men, gods, leprechauns, unicorns, werewolves, Dracula, chupacabra, or God. But it's fun to pretend there are.
I have to agree than this Palace is haunted! I have a picture of the staircase leading to the Tudor apartments, and when you take a closer look you can see a woman coming down the stairs.
Omg I'm so jealous, you guys are so lucky. I am in the USA, sooo far away from England. But I want to visit SO BAD. I am obsessed with the Tudors, and I believe in ghosts so.. when the day finally comes that I can visit Hampton Court Palace... Tudor history AND their ghosts.. I have no words. hahahaha
@AnneARcTiCa I'm from the US as well and I studied/interned in England (London) for the summer! It's absolutely amazing and if you're into history the possibilities and things to do are endless! Best time of my life :)
i went the other day, and one of the pictures i took of henry's portrait in the gallery has a figure of a face floating next to him, i believe its catherine howard but im not sure, i also think it could possibly be anne boleyn but the figure isnt quite clear enough to name although is clear to make out its a woman.
@saveusrecycle You definately should go, so much history, they give you an MP3 thing to give you information as you walk round. If you go there, don't forget to go around the maze!
i did work experince there when i was 15. really enjoyed it learnt facts i didnt know about, i also visited some of the rooms that are closed of to the public.
i have to admit i did get some creepy feelings in some of the rooms by this i mean the feeling of dread which i felt in the kings apartment.
Its Amazing. In 1974 as a child I visited Hampton Court and the most strangest experiance, I saw all these people walking about in out of date cloths on. Flared trousers, platform boots and many of the blokes had long hair.
I went there as a tourist some years ago now. I was leaning on a banister at the top of a staircase studying the wall paintings. It was a warm summers day but I felt really chilled when all of a sudden I heard some footsteps shuffling up behind me and I noticed a sweet smell of scent. Thinking a woman had come behind me I turned around - and found myself completely alone. It was broad daylight and the palace was bustling with tourists. Might it have been the ghost of Catherine Howard I wonder?
A few days ago i attened a ghost tour here, very atmospheric and well presented.I didnt personally see anything, but its good for tourism. They lead you round in twilight,we stood outside the fire-doors,allegedly opened by the ghost in 2003,and at the app moment,a member of staff flung them open. You can imagine how some people reacted.Iam open-minded about ghosts, but wasnt convinced.Worth a trip though.
I was at Hampton Court last October -- didn't know anything about the alleged hauntings at the time. I am definitely one of the people who felt panicked and then fainted in the gallery -- I thought that I was just overtired (it had been a busy week), but then one of the palace staff explained that I was one of many who had the exact same experience in the same location...creepy
I love animal ghost stores..its always bittersweet..I know be not scared at all to know i have ghost animals in my house pose to humans..for humans are always good and innocent..but human..not always..
My father was on guard duty there during the war. He patrolled the long gallery each night. One night he felt a breeze rush past him and he heard the sound of banging on the wall and a woman loudly wailing. The part of the wall he referred to was later found to be a covered doorway to the King's private quarters. My father always stated that his friends must have played a practical joke on him, but his friends denied this and his surviving friends still do to this day.
@davem732006 Sorry but I do not know which part of the Palace my father meant by the long gallery. I get the feeling that he was referring to a place on the ground floor of the building. I know he did not see anyhting, only hear the sounds, but he was a no nonsense Welshman and not one to tell fanciful tales.
@ladydigger The haunted gallery is on the ground fllor. It's kind of a long walkway. The Royal chapel sits in the middle of it. Thats the so called haunted gallery
@davem732006 I am getting goose bumps now! Perhaps my father was wrong in his assumption that a practical joke was played on him. Personally I do not like to believe in ghosts (being an archaeologist and having to work in some pretty spooky places) but perhaps I should have a more open mind and not try to explain away the many sounds I hear when working alone with the dead.
@ladydigger Wow what an amazing job!! What have you dug up? Ibelieve without a doubt! I had a very good experience with my Grandad it was quite amazing.
@davem732006 My latest task was in Vienna last month, helping to sort out a newly discovered medieval plague pit under the city cathedral. So sad seeing those thousands of bones stacked floor to ceiling in the underground vaults. The silence (and the smell!) was very evocative but the saddest part for me was the number of tiny skulls amongst the debris. We removed them to a better place and then a service was said for the departed.
@ladydigger Maybe your Dad might have heard the Ghost of Katherine Howard - Henry VIII's fifth wife. She screamed in the Long Gallery one the day she was arrested for treason. She's a regular ghost in Hampton Court and in June, she is joined by the ghost of Anne Bolyen who happens to be her cousin.
@pomfan07 Its an amazing place, I've been there many times and the only creepy feeling you get is the thought that so many innocent and some not so innocent people were held prisoner and executed there.
i was hampton court the other early in the morning withmy bf. we wher on are own but really strong smells and cold air was blowing on my right arm..but there was no windows or air con around.... my bf said that he kept feeling a hand on his shoulder thinking it was me kept turning around... we took pictures and mostly there are orbs right in front of us i was shocked..
I went there this last summer and near Katherine Howard's quarters felt someone run past me, although no one was there. Very spooky place, but so lovely!
