shares the spirit of sister ray. it was the infinity concept on the vinyl that blew us all away, which i imagine some of the younger fans never experienced.
@gab136 Thanks for uploading this song, but Jim O'Rourke was only in the band for like, 3/4 years, and certainly not when this song came out. And also, look how short he is! Fuck that guy.
But, LOVE THIS BAND, AND THIS SONG!
ps, how does that bass just keep getting lower and lower?
@thrillho while he's playing he's just strumming that low string, he turns the tuning key lower and lower. Obviously he is not tuning it out of control, because you can't even get a sound when a string is really loose, he just goes from one key to a lower key, slowly...Or he might have tuned his entire bass down from the get go. I don't know if he used a four or 5 (or 7) string bass, but he might have down tuned the whole darn bass before hand. But I like to imagine the first way.
One of my top 20 songs of all time. So unique and colorful. Sonic Youth rules! "We're gonna find the beauty of feeling good, and we're gonna stay there as long as we think we should." Hell yeah.
only sonic youth could do something like this - it starts off like a normal song and then descends into semiconscious madness. the best band out there?
Based on my experiences I would have to say yes. Based on length of time in existence, and total quality throughout, and also, the radness factor, then yes, I would agree. The best band out there.
@0nlyReaLGOth Tool and Sonic Youth are very different bands...And judging by your first paragraph I doubt that the people here will listen to your plea to listen to tool, they'll just die instead.
Maybe if some nicer Tool fan asked...(before you flame me I really like 46 and 2 by Tool so don't tell me I'm a hater)
On the original vinyl version of "Evol", the ambient tone in the last 3 minutes of the song looped in the runout groove. I don't have it, but I surely know that it does that.
When it comes to this song, I'm right there with Neil Young !

Awesome stuff! Definitely one of Sonic Youth's best songs right up there with Teenage Riot, The Diamond Sea, Sugar Kane and Schizophrenia.
