My first bike was a 1953 D1. I bought it in 1963 for three quid with no second gear..it was interesting riding it like that! I eventually took it apart with a screwdriver, a couple of spanners and a hammer, it was that easy to fix. Splitting the crankcases was a pain though. Thanks for the memories!
It cost 6 shillings (30p) for a gallon of 2 stroke at the nearest garage just over a mile away. I carried a can on my push-bike. Can you imagine doing that today? A boy of 11 being served petrol in a can! Those were the days when you could go and do most things without restrictions or worries about what you were up to. The garage got used to me and my friend going for 'bike' petrol, great times, shame how its all gone....
Thanks for the posting Steve, great bike, it looks very well restored, well done! I bought a D1 when I was 11 years old in 1964 from a boy at school. It cost me £1.50 and needed a new primary drive sprocket as he had rounded the teeth off with a stretched chain! My Dad got it fixed at Lloyd Goff in Wokingham for £2.00. I ran that bike all over the farm for over 6 years, it was a great bike and I learnt so much about mechanics.
how do you stop it? cus mine has been race tuned at some point and to stop it i have to stall it. horrible thing to ride, put it into a corner and it feels as if the forks are about to bend. been riding and enfield 500 since i was 17, and thats a tank!
roars like a tiger,though.....
beauty.

how easy are those to keep and insure?
thanks

they're really simple bikes... I'm 18 and just bought one as a first bike.
They're cheaper on the insurance compared to modern 125's for me, but not sure if that's always the case.
