I just saw him do this role at the Vienna State Opera and this aria probably got more than 3 minutes of applause from the audience. He obviously didn't have the same energy he did 30 years ago but it was still great singing.
Scusate.
Is that Katia Ricciarelli in the beginning? Beautiful and with a great voice. I didn't know she sang this role.
Nucci is amazing. I think he could have been a great dramatic tenor if he had sung as tenor and not baritone. But this is the classic Verdi baritone: great legato and spectacular high notes.
There are bass singers with the natural capability of reaching baritone high tones (eg a flat), and baritones with great easiness to produce tenor tones. However, the number of harmonics (high and low) of any voice defines whether or not a person has a higher or lower classification. That is to say that the same note sang by a baritone sounds lower than the same one sang by a tenor. Also, please find the barytenors in the internet (and intermediate voice). Best regards and enjoy singing, Aurel53
I remember that Ricciarelli sang 'Ballo' at Covent Garden circa 1975, I believe with Domingo, and done with the Swedish names for the characters. In fact it was broadcast on the BBC - I can even remember we snotty undergrads at U. of Lancaster rolling our eyes when the audience in the broadcast started clapping before the little instrumental coda to 'Eri Tu' came to an end.
I agree..Usually he barks a bit much 4 me. But here, just right:) I love his sound! But sometimes I do have 2 look away because he makes those ridiculous, I think unnecessary(did I spell that right?)faces:( Especially when he sings his Fs & Gs. It's distracting. Plus, I think it's creating tension in the jaw area:( He's like a modern day Bechi. They both bark the heck outta these arias. Leo's definitely 1 of the last Verdi baritones we have left! Can some1 please stop Hampson from singing these!

oh my goodness...Nucci sounds fantastic in this performance. His Verdi rarely disappoints. He really eases into his top. Its amazing. And he is still able to achieve alot of vocal success on the stage. I think he is in his mid 60's and still sounds really good.
He's 67 and just made history in the opera world with his Rigoletto--for the first time ever in the history of Teatro Real-Madrid, a singer was asked to sing an encore!
I think this video is an amazing "modern day" performance. He usually barks WAY too much for my taste, but here he really sings this aria! He's an amazingly strong and dependable singer, but who cares about that?
he is also what the companys love. very dependable and reliable and the big high notes are always there.... he just did not long ago a concert from the stage of scala and sang about every big aria in one night and brought the house down. so he must be doing something right. i like his barber a whole bunch... :--)
leo has much more squillo than dimitri on the top who i also like for some stuff and a much more italian sound especially for verdi. he is close to a tenor but chose to sing verdi baritone for longevity. actually a verdi baritone and a dramatic tenor are similar. one more open throated but both high. he does bark a little in the italian tradition but some people actually love that. for the big verdi roles he is still at the top of his game considering his age.

no no no!
I am sorry but I HATE absolutely Hate Leo Nucci. Every time he sings i can only think: is he barking or what? There's a true lack of baritones if he's considered to be one of the best....where are Taddei, Capuccili, Bastianini, Herlea, Warren?
I mean Gobbi didn;t have the best voice, completely lacked the top notes, but had an amazing intelligence to carry out his roles...a superb actor and technician..nucci has plain voice and no stage presence what so ever
Wow, this is really fantastic singing. Nucci definitely has been underestimated and overlooked. Perhaps history will look fondly at him. I think he is the last of the Verdi baritone tradition. Who is left? And don't tell me Hvorostovsky or Hampson.
I would say both Juan Pons and Vladimir Chernov were good for a time, and around at the moment I like Carlos Alvarez very much. But yes we are certainly struggling when Carlo Guelfi and Bruno Caproni are among the world's leading Verdi baritones.
I think what happened was at the beggining of his career, there was a generation of Verdi Bartiones who were wrapping up, Milnes, Cappucilli, Merrill, and MacNeil... along with the recent memories of Warren, Bastiannini ect... which caused him to be poo-pooed if you will as often happens to the generation after a truly great one. Until the 90's when he was sort of the only Verdi Baritone left. He will never be underestimated by me... I adore his singing

Dopo l'anno 1986 siamo rimasti quasi tutti sordi...

You're totally wrong. Pure ignorance on your part. Leo Nucci is brilliant, and this is not an isolated opinion, it's a proven fact.
vilabreze 2 years ago 2
This baritone was a tenor ,he is dramatic and powerfull enough for Verdi operas.Dimitri H. has a lower resonance , very good for Verdi.
.Hampson ...lyrical , more musicall style(Broadw...style), good for songs , Mozart ,Rossini etc but no Verdi .
