yes, he plays rimshots. no you dont necessarily need to play them in studio. but it mostly sounds better if you play them when its a song lke this with the snare on the 2 and 4

a rimshot is where when u strike the head, the stick also hits the rim, it gives loads more attack.

i tend to rimshot most hits aside from rolls and stuff.

I've been playing Drums for over 30 years and this is the mold I've always worked from. Doing a whole lot while not doing much, nuance and subtlety is key. Having a deep pocket and being right on the meter. Turns out, people like playing with me. Listen well young drummers, Abe's got this one figured out.
