Exactly there is a duality to words and that is why context matters so much, and that is why in every case what is the motive behind someone words matters as much as their words. And you're right, it is a bit circular - but I wasn't saying that they shouldn't TRUST the Church or the Bible (in fact, I didn't say anything about the Church), I was saying that they can't accept the Bible as 100% fact. They need to look at it with a critical eye and think for themselves. But, if they want to call themselves Christians, they should still listen to the message that Jesus was trying to get across, which *does* comes through in the Bible.
I know this is satire, and it's really funny, but the points about taking things in the Bible in socio-political context, not taking everything literally, and acknowledging that the book has been edited quite a lot over time are valid. @mattakudesu That's true - but you have to remember that the OT was written at a time when people's lives were short and very harsh. The idea of a vengeful God made sense to them, all things considered. I don't think that Christians should blindly accept anything in the Bible, especially the OT; they're supposed to be followers of JESUS, not the Bible, and Jesus' message was to be good to others and worship God. The Bible should be treated as a window into Christianity's history, not the truth.

The Bible (rather the NT) was written long after his death. I'm saying that Christians and non-Christians alike should look at the book objectively, as a historic, outdated but certainly poignant piece of literature. Of course they can be good people without the dogma!

Overtime, language evolved, translations/interpretations changed, texts were reassembled to fit peoples needs/motives. The full original story is not there. For example, if you try reading/understanding plays by Shakespeare in modern terms it would be difficult despite its written in modern English.

And you're right, it is a bit circular - but I wasn't saying that they shouldn't TRUST the Church or the Bible (in fact, I didn't say anything about the Church), I was saying that they can't accept the Bible as 100% fact. They need to look at it with a critical eye and think for themselves. But, if they want to call themselves Christians, they should still listen to the message that Jesus was trying to get across, which *does* comes through in the Bible.

I know this is satire, and it's really funny, but the points about taking things in the Bible in socio-political context, not taking everything literally, and acknowledging that the book has been edited quite a lot over time are valid. The core message of Christianity is to be a good person, and both Christians and non-Christians need to stop using a 2000 year old book to attack each other (I'm not Christian btw, just someone who hates intolerance in ALL forms).

@mattakudesu That's true - but you have to remember that the OT was written at a time when people's lives were short and very harsh. The idea of a vengeful God made sense to them, all things considered. I don't think that Christians should blindly accept anything in the Bible, especially the OT; they're supposed to be followers of JESUS, not the Bible, and Jesus' message was to be good to others and worship God. The Bible should be treated as a window into Christianity's history, not the truth.

The Bible (rather the NT) was written long after his death. I'm saying that Christians and non-Christians alike should look at the book objectively, as a historic, outdated but certainly poignant piece of literature. Of course they can be good people without the dogma!

Actually, the Bible says God made every man in his own likeness and image. So if someone is homosexual, is that not God's likeness and image? Homosexuals don't choose to be gay, just like you don't choose to be straight! I'm sorry. but the Bible does not ban homosexuality, especially since it is something completely out of a person's control.

I don't really like Christians who "interpret" the bible. If you can't take the bible literally, why bother with it at all? Arguing that it's a good moral code, or that only some things in the bible are valid defeats the purpose of the bible, which is meant to be followed to the word.
I don't get it. Why bother believing it if you can only believe fractions of it?

The bible was written many years after Jesus, so it was written by people who "dreamed" of what to say.. if you compare the bible copies of the guys who wrote them, u will see contradiction between them (Luka, Matta, ..). The scripts are not written by Jesus, so how come they are considered sacred? besides, I found out there are more than 70 copies of the bible: King James...confusing! have a great day

why should we even trust a book that has no proof to go with it, yes i admit that book is very old and holds a peice of this world culture. but our race was only young we belive in human sacrifice for a long while but we are now smart enough to say enought childish fantasy, this is whats real. here is the proof.

@mattakudesu I understand that though historical events/figures/groups of people are mentioned in the text, does not make it entirely truth. When the bible was assembled, texts were edited out . Overtime, language evolved, translations/interpretations changed, texts were reassembled to fit peoples needs/motives. The full original story is not there. For example, if you try reading/understanding plays by Shakespeare in modern terms it would be difficult despite its written in modern English.

@TheOrcasRule God gives free will to angles and man, Pride is what caused Satan to fall and satan took 1/3 of the angles with him; some of the 1/3 sided with satan and the others did not take sides. The fact that God dose not "get rid of satan" shows that he is always true to his word, if he took out satan or sin he would take away free will and then would not be perfect because that would mean he lies. Scripture is clear on the sovereignty of God. Peace be with you friend

Your free will argument is BS. First it isn't "free will" at all for some men to have the desire to commit horrid acts against other people - it's evil and unnatural, and does not point to us being "created in god's image." Second, there is nothing "free" about eternal torment being doled out for making the "wrong' choices. Third, we could have been created with some degree of control over our own lives, but without the desire to rape, kill and destroy.

I'm willing to bet that the guy in the video is a youth pastor. While it may be easy to convince young minds of your so-called "truth" anyone who been in the real world for 5 minutes would know that the bible is so full of illogic that it doesn't make sense which probably means it's not true. Things like prayer, for example, doesn't make sense. God said he'd answer your prayer, then if you ask for anything specific, it never happens unless such a situation can be ambiguously defined.

are you going to claim that there is no animal on this earth that defies the evolutionary process? In other words, there is no animal that had to have the compliment of features it has now in order to have survived at all, so that it could not have survived without these things existing in full from the start of its existence? Believing in the supernatural eternal God is the most logical, the most rational, the most scientific thing the educated can do.
The "proof" atheists tend to ask for would require God to take away our free will and compel us to believe in Him. God gives us plenty of evidence without taking away our free will. This is the way He operates, so that we come to Him on a desire to know Him, not by compulsion.
