  • Could I maybe do 13 CH instead of 26 at the beginning to make the scarf a thinner width?

  • @LetiLaFlaca Yes, you can work a smaller chain for a thinner scarf

  • do you know how to crochet an eternity scarf?

  • Thanks for your video. I had learned the shell stitch many years ago and didn't quite get the hang of it then, but having it on hand and do step by step with you I think I can manage it this time around. This will be my next scarf project. Thanks for your time!

  • how about to make a scarf for a 5 year old?

  • is there a way to make this smaller for a 7 month old?

  • @cathywolfe97 A scarf for a 7 month old does not seem practical. You can make it larger and turn it in to a blanket for a baby.

  • @cathywolfe97

@tjw1963 is right... it's not safe at all, either!

  • Is the hat easier or is the scarf easier to make?

  • Sorry tjw1963

  • @the1963... I'm just learning how to crochet an I made my first scarf...now I wanna learn how to do this pattern an i want a nice lenght scarf how long is my first chain suppose to be so the scarf don't b so short...plz answer me

  • Teresa, thanks for all the great videos! My two daughters and I have been making this scarf. My daughters made this scarf for all their close friends for Christmas!

  • I saw some long booties, the ones that go to the knee. Can you do a pair of them? I would love to make some with the scarf for my daughter that is getting ready to leave for the Army in June.

  • Its sooo pretty! It will be my NeXT project!

  • @springz2000 Please share a video response when you get your scarf complete

  • This would make a beautiful blanket for my daughter's baby. How long of a chain would you recommend? I've read that blankets should have a border to hold the blankets shape. Would this require one? Thank you!

  • I love this scarf, I made for my friend, so if I want to do a hat to match what kind should I do?

  • how much yarn do you have to use for this project? The whole thing?

  • do you have a pattern for a Man's V neck sweater vest. My 70 yr old dad loves to wear them over his shirts in the winter

    TnWonderer1@aol.com

  • @TnWonderer I'm sorry I do not .

  • I picked your tutorial because your name is Teresa like mine! :D

  • @CoriDeaththorn Nice to meet you Teresa and thank you for picking this tutorial.

  • Thank you! I somehow figured it out and am now on my way to a beautiful scarf. Multiples of 6. Very good to know. :-). Happy crocheting!

  • this is great. What would u recommend as an edge for it? I know it looks great on its own, but I like my scarfs to have borders....any ideas?

  • Tjw1963 I don't like the width of the scarf. I always tend to make my scarves skinny. How do you determine the amount of chains for a skinnier scarf?

  • @Philippiansthree1314 The multiple is 6. You will subtract 6 chains for each shell that you want to eliminate.

  • I love how your videos are in slow mo!! REALLY helps!! :)

  • @natalienicole238 Thank you.

  • thank you so much for your videos, they are amazingly helpfull and i really appreciate the low motion in them...

  • @Aguzman13 I appreciate the comment, thank you.

  • Thanks! I use to know this stitch long ago.... Just started making a scarf by watching your video. My daughter and I made one over thanksgiving weekend. Your videos are great! I always search your videos first.

  • @Kathybabe4 You are welcome!

  • Teresa, I love that you have a blog and keep all your written out patterns (instructions) on the blog. But I hate there is not a print button, or a print friendly available. I have had to copy & paste into Microsoft word, I hate it. PLEASE can you tell me or install a print button?

  • @CAPSandNOOSES I do have a print button. It was at the bottom of the blog postings so I have moved it to the top. It is between the Facebook Icon and the +share

  • so pretty much, 5 double crochet where there is a single crochet, skip two and single crochet (should be a double crochet), skip two and 5 double crochet? right? :)

  • OKAY nevermind. I caught on :) thanks.

  • kay... you go way too fast.

  • awesome

  • You're are an awesome teacher Teresa!!

  • This was my first crochet project and now with your help I'm going to try to make a poncho

  • I will happily send a picture. :) It doesn't look as good as the one you did here, but I just started trying to do this a week ago. :) I'm almost finished with my first skein of yarn for this scarf. Do you have a video that shows how to start a new skein in the middle of your work? Thanks.

  • Thank you so much for your videos. I'm just starting out and yours are the most helpful. This scarf will be my first project....

  • @jamiebelle1207 Please share a picture when you get your scarf complete

  • You're a badass!

  • if i were to make a hat out of this type of pattern how would i go about it?

  • @0p0a0s4 I do have a hat shell hat posted. I will send you the video

  • @0p0a0s4

Thank you sooooo much! Love your videos.

  • Your stuff is awesome. I always use your tutorials and have gotten friends addicted to you too! Thanks for all the help!!!!

  • @kmezza Thank you. I appreciate the referral to your friends

  • I love your crocheting videos, I'm so hooked with what your doing I don't want to watch any other person. Your great at this Teresa, I wanted to learn how to do the Prairie Diamond but can you do a video on that.

  • @anothercheapoproduct I appreciate your loyalty, thank you. I do have a diamond crochet block that I will send to you.

  • my mother dye few months ago and i started to crochet and i learn alote with you.Thank you teresa

  • You are so great.

  • Question: When one does the shell stitch, are the double crochets all in the same chain? I am have lots of trouble with it. So, one does a normal double crochet, then does 4 more in the same chain, b/c in this video it looks like she is doing the double crochet in different spots every time. I really want to make this scarf. Please I need help!!!! Also, are you putting two strands of yarn on your hook when you are doing the double crochet? like one normally would do for a double crochet? Thanks!

  • @LesMiserables9430 I am working all the double crochet in the same chain. You wrap the yarn around your hook once for the double crochet.

  • @tjw1963 Okay but when you yarn over and insert your hook are you putting the hook through the chain so that 1 string of the chain is on the top or two. Like, when you would do a half double crochet where only one strand is on the top or a normal double crochet where you insert it through the chain in the spot where two strands are on the top and one on the bottom? How do you get it so that there isn't just a hole for the bottom of your shell? If that makes any sense...

  • Thanks Teresa You a grest teacher..

  • I started this with a skein of yarn that was given to me. I ran out and can't find another skein. Any suggestions on where I might find another skein. I used Wituck4 100% Monsanto Worsted Weight Acrylic winter white.

  • I started this but ran out of yarn. It was very difficult for me to get it right but finally did. Do you have any suggestions how to find more yarn? Unfortunately I used a skein that was given to me. I really want to finish this for my sister

  • I love ur videos they help me so much! I am getting pretty good at crocheting... my only problem is say I want to make a baby blanket how do I know how many chains across I need like I usually do about 55-65 depending on what size crochet hook I use. but I dont know how many to count out for this?! please help me i have a baby shower in 3 weeks and usually it only takes me about 3-5 days to make a baby blanket!

    xoxo

    chrissy

  • Oh wow, I cannot tell you enough just how much I LOVE your videos! I have learned so much from watching them, and I am fully confident that with lots of practice I will one day be as good as you. How nice that you take the time to teach us these cool techinques!

Thank you for sharing your gift/talent, and as always, Happy Crocheting!

  • I'm having trouble with when you chain 3 for double crochet and you finish out that row and come back where do I put my needle? in the top of the chain 3 .... also do you have videos on things like that what chain do I put my needle in it's kinda hard to see how you do that some times but I just LOVE watching your videos THANK YOU SO MUCH

  • Teresa could you explain what this means , I am working on a bed jacket pattern and it tells me to put a tr crochet in the 4th of 7ch...I am lost with this..like this roll says to (1gr, 1ch, 1tr, 1ch) twice, 1gr, 1ch, 1tr in 4th of 7ch.... I would appreciate any help you can offer.

  • @MsRedab The first part means that you will work a triple crochet in the 4 chain in your chain of 7. I am wonder if the 1gr is a typo. The other sequence of stitches would be 1 triple crochet, chain 1, 1 triple crochet , working twice. (1gr, 1ch, 1tr, 1ch) twice

You can also write to the author of the pattern if gr is an abbreviation they have come up with specific to the pattern.

  • Teresa could you explain what this means , I am working on a bed jacket pattern and it tells me to put a tr crochet in the 4th of 7ch...I am lost with this..like this roll says to (1gr, 1ch, 1tr, 1ch) twice, 1gr, 1ch, 1tr in 4th of 7ch

  • Guru Teresa lol, I'm making a headband with this stitch (I think lol), how many chains would I start with? Is that what people say are "multiples"? How many chains or how many stitches one makes in a certain pattern? I'm not sure, at any rate, how many chains would I make to make a fab headband? Thanks a bunch for your help.

  • @azianoel00 The multiple is 6. The amount of chains you need will depend on what direction you want use to make the head band. Do you want to make a chain and join or work the length, then sew the edges together.

  • @tjw1963 I think I've been working the length and sewing together but it doesn't have that finished look I'm longing for, so making a chain and joining might be something new and different how would I do it working a chain?

  • Umm i am makeing a drawstring cupcake bag it looks 3-d so the bottom is 6 inches through the center. how tall should i make it?

  • @edwardschild88 I will estimate 3 inches high

  • @tjw1963 thank you!!

  • Comment removed

  • If I wanted to do a scarf that was about 6 inches wide, I imagine it would be 3 shells across. How many loops in a chain would I need?

  • @chunkybutt122 You would still work 5 double crochet. You would make a chain of 20 for an estimated 6 inch wide scarf.

  • Thanks :-)

  • Thanks Teresa! Can I ask where to go for me to print the pattern

  • @joylizadistor You will find the link to the written instructions posted in the video details below the video.

  • The more you practice, the more it will make sense. If you are new to crochet, you will want to learn the basic stitches first.

  • That is the most confusing thing I have ever watched.

  • Hi Teresa i was woundering if you could help me , i'm trying to learn the spider stitch but it just doesn't look right is there any chance you could help me with this please .

    pattern instruction

1dc, 1ch, 1dc miss 1 ch 1dc, 1ch, 1dc into the next ch rep to the end of the row turn ch2

row 1 , this is where I'm lost because I don't know what ch sp to go into.

  • @leanne3021 If this is your foundation row, you will work 1DC, CH1, 1DC in the same chain, then skip a chain and work the next 1DC, CH1, 1DC

  • why are the smashing pumpkins in the tags?

  • @aleinalex They are computer generated tag suggestions based on other tags I have used. Not only that, I have a couple pumpkin crochet projects which creates a relationship.

  • Would you please tell me what kind of camera do you use to do these videos? Thank you

  • @cdw518 This video was recorded with a Sony HRD-SR11. While my camera has been discontinued, Sony does have Handycams on the market with the similar features or better than what I am using. I am transitioning over to a Sony NEX-VG10 for the new tutorials.

  • thnxs this pattern works great for a dishcloth

  • @cookieboy45 You are welcome!

  • HI Teresa,

do you have a tutorial for a crochet infinity scarf?? Tks much!

  • Teresa I just want to say that even tho sometimes that you go rather fast you do a WONDERFUL job of explaining what u are doing and why. The only question I have is.... ok well I have a couple.... 1) is there supposed to be on chain left on the foundation chain when yoy start? and 2) so the second row is 2dc at the beginning and 3dc at the end right? Can u explain why we are doing it that way?

  • @suz8879 1) You can try to get the chain exact but most times you may have extra chain. On completion, sew it in between the stitches. If it is really long, you can cut the chain at the farthest point from the first worked stitches, unravel the chain then sew it in.

    2) When you start the next row, you are working a half shell, giving you a straight edge. If you worked a full shell, you would have a rounded, uneven edge.

  • @tjw1963 I understand that a full shell on the sides would make the scarf uneven but why is one side 2dc and the other is 3?

  • @suz8879 There are 3 on both sides. The beginning chain 3 counts as the first double crochet.

  • Hi Teresa, I just finished my second afghan. I learned how to make granny squares by crocheting along with you. I did one with 64 squares which I sewed together, and one which I made by just going around and around , They are both beautiful! Now I'm going to make a baby blanket using this pattern.

    Thanks so much!

  • @cybercita They sound really nice. Please post a video response of your work!

  • I have been looking for a nice pattern for a great friend of mine and I think I just found it. Thank you for putting up the video!!

  • @Mystic3975 You are welcome! There is an annotation link in the video that shows how to straighten the edge so both ends look the same.

  • Thank you!

  • @pandapotlovebug You are welcome! This is a great project for the cold winter months.

  • When you do the five dc. Do you do the dc in the same chain?

  • @MSKAYSCOTT Yes, the 5 double crochet are all worked in the same chain. I like to work below 2 chains to reduce the possibility of holes.

  • Thanks Teresa for your quick response and wonderful videos. I was watching the video on my iPhone and there's no side note so I'll hop onto my desktop to take a look at :09. Thanks again!

  • Whitekitty02, that is my question too. To me that might look a bit odd to have one straight edge and one shell edge.

  • @MsVintageCat If you watch to 00:9 seconds in to the video, there is an annotation link to a video on straightening the edge.

  • how can you level the scarf on both ends. one end has shells ans the other end is straight out. how do you level the scarf out?

  • @whitekitty02 See annotation link at 00:9 seconds for tutorial on straightening the edge. A alternative is to use the shell on both ends so they match.

  • Maybe someone already asked this but... when you finished the first row, you chained 3. How many do you chain after you finish the 2nd, 3rd, etc rows?

  • @jsimon171 There is a link to the written instructions posted in the video details below the video. You will find written and symbol instructions that answer your question.

  • very good video! do you ball your yarn? could you advise how to do that?

  • @Alibidancer929 I do not see a need to roll balls. I use my yarn as it comes from the store.

  • @tjw1963 my scarf is coming along great!! how do you connect skein, do you just tie a knot or...? thank you for answering my questions!!

  • @Alibidancer929 I will send you a video for attaching a new color of yarn.

  • @tjw1963 ok thank you!!!!

  • @tjw1963 Okay thank you!!

  • love it!

  • 26 inches or cm?

  • i'm a beginner, so the chain of 26 at the beginning is 26 loops?

  • is the chain of 26 in or cm?

  • @oxelecxo The scarf is 17 CM wide

  • can u help me learn to read a pattern? i cna crochet and i watch your videos but i would really like to make them by the pattern and it all looks like chinese to me. i would be so grateful!!

  • wow you are a wonderful teacher...

  • @colombean84 Thank you! :)

  • How many skeins does it take to complete this scarf? Do you make a practice of balling your skeins? I am somewhat new to crochet and I have to say that your videos are the best teachers. I have really tried to read the written instructions and cannot make heads nor tails of them.

  • Thanks for the great tutorial!!! It's a beautiful scarf, and your pattern and clear instructions made me pick up a crochet needle for the first time in years. I am almost through with my scarf but was wondering whether it's possible for it to have a straight (vs. wavy) end, so that both ends match? How can I accomplish that?

  • I've been crocheting off and on for a few years, but nothing more than single and afghan stiches, and this was so easy for me to pick up, I love the design and its simple and elegant. thank you for posting!

  • I am determined to make this scarf, but don't see how to do the ends and beginnings of each row. MIne starts OK then turns into a triangle, thinner and thinner. What am I doing wrong?

  • @newfartwoman It sounds like you may be missing stitches. I do have the symbol instruction diagram posted on my crochet blog. This will help you see exactly where the stitches should go and how many there are. The link is in the video details below the video.

  • @tjw1963 Hi Teresa. I made a beautiful scarf as followed your instructions. However, my scarf is seems to be hard , not soft. I bought red heart 4ply. What can I do to make it softy?

  • @lovercrochet Hi--I;m not Teresa, but maybe this will help...

Sometimes if the yarn is not really soft, gently handwashing the item you have crocheted in lukewarm water with a little fabric softener with help. Do not pull or "twist" the item to rinse it--just gently squeeze the water out of it. Then you can lay it flat to dry, gently smoothing it out so it will dry flat in the shape you want (again, don't "pull" on it--you can pull it out of shape while it is still wet). Maybe this will help!

  • @lovercrochet I have found that you can wash the piece with fabric softener or your can use a dryer sheet. It softens the yarn right up.

  • would you know how to make the Tilda headband with the flower?

  • I LOVE YOU!!! oh my goodness I just made a winter hat for a friend and now I am making this for my dad, thank you sooooo much!

  • @MsZoologist1 You will be keeping everyone's head warm this winter! I appreciate the comment!!

  • @tjw1963 Well, i'm making a scarf now, I've got some gorgeous thread from Wal-Mart, it changes from a cherry red to bergendy (Dark red. Me=can't spell), and all these different shades. My dad picked it out himself after I told him I was going to make him a scarf and I wasn't sure what shade to do it in. :) I think the best part about this video is the fact that a 12 year old like me that's just a beginner can do something this hard because of your GREAT instruction!

  • P.S Thanks for replying! I also subscribed Btw

  • Im now practicing the shell stitch. thank you so much. I loved the puff stitch so much that I didnt want to stop! lol. Now Im working on this one and its just so great to see all this beautiful yarn getting used and becoming such beautiful things. I cant believe I just learned this and Im making gifts for family and friends now. Thank You so much. I really do appreciate the time you invest. Its really helping me to relax also. Your the Best. Peace & Blessings.

  • @mlm1025 Keep up the good work! I appreciate the comment.

  • Thank You Teresa, Ive been working on the puff stitch and made a few hats and scarves, Im not practicing my shell stitch you just taught me. thank you so much. there coming out so beautiful. It looks like Ive been crocheting for years. Your a great teacher. thank you again. Great Video!

  • I decided to start crocheting again and I have forgotten some of the terms and abbreviations. I have started a hat (something I have never attempted) and do not know exactly what they want. The directions say: Ch3, PST in joining, ch 1 [PST, dc in sp, dc in PST, 2 dc in sp] 7 times, dc in PST, dc in sp, dc in PST, 2 dc in top of ch-3; turn -42 sts. I understand Ch- chain PST? I have no idea maybe pattern stitch? Dc- double crochet Sp- space Ch-3? Decrease 3 Vicki
  • @muziklvr316 PST means "post stitch" around the next double crochet. You crochet around the stitch instead of into it. If you search YouTube for "Crochet Block and Post Stitches" it will bring up a PBS instructional video from CrochetToday.

  • is this pattern a yarn pig because I only have two things of yarn nd i wanted to do it long??

  • @Luvlydrk1 If you make it narrow, two skeins of yarn should be enough.

  • Teresa,

Thank you for the great instructions. I would like to make this a long scarf would that be possible? Or will it through off the gauge? thank you.

  • @CB50221 You can make the scarf as long as you want to.

  • Thank you so much for posting these tutorials! I made a few shell scarves for cousins in Mexico while I was there this past December and one for a cousin in Texas. I also just finished a set of shell hat and scarf for a friend in a very nice sapphire blue. These are easy and they look elegant.

  • As with many others, I learned to crochet a little as a child and I now want to pick it back up. I can do a chain, sc, and dc pretty well and just finished a blanket. I'm now trying to make a shell scarf for my grandson who is 3. I chained 16 (for a smaller neck size) and followed the instructions for the first row, but at the end, it said to skip 2 chains and single crochet, but I had no chains left - only the three scallops. This was right before it said to single crochet, chain 3 & turn.

  • As with many others, I learned to crochet a little as a child and I now want to pick it back up. I can do a chain, sc, and dc pretty well and just finished a blanket. I chained 16 (for a smaller neck size) and followed the instructions for the first row, but at the end, it said to skip 2 chains and single crochet, but I had no chains left - only the three scallops. • I'm pretty sure I'm doing everything right but the first row always comes out curving. It is supposed to be 5 dc in the one chain. Is it just my tension maybe? I've tried adjusting my tension but everytime the row comes odd and stretched looking! Help!

Your crochet videos have helped me learn a new hobby, thank you! :D

  • I've practiced this, but I think I crochet too tightly, since my shells come out small and the spaces in my chain look huge in comparison... It just looks awkward...

    More practice, I suppose...

  • I also use red heart yarn but 5 times smaller than that! :)

  • thank you finally first video on youtube thats show slow so we can see and learn :)

  • Hi, thank you for your time in those tutorial videos for us, iam a begginner. I love your video. Please, explain me if is better to do double crochet passing the hook in one loop or two loop from the chain below. Excuse my english. Thanks from Puerto Rico.

  • @palital1006 This stitch will work better with the double crochet.

  • if i wanted to make this scarf and stitch for my daughter how long would my starting chain be? she is 2 and it's a little wide for her neck

  • @dancehappy202 never mind! i figured it out. i just did a starting chain of 21 and my pattern is 3 shells 2 shells 3 shells 2 shells. it's the perfect width for her neck now. BTW... everytime i want to learn a stitch i watch YOUR videos. they are so easy to learn when i can see and hear it very clearly. thankyou so much for taking the time to teach so many people!

  • @dancehappy202 I would suggest a chain of 10 or 16 for a smaller width.

  • Teresa, Thank you sooooo much for your videos. I wanted to learn how to crochet but was being taught by right handers. I didnt catch on until I saw your videos. Thank you! Thanks for doing different things like hats and such.

  • Teresa: thank you so much!!!! your videos are very clear and wonderfull. I'm starting in the crochet and I'm practing every day, I don't speak english but I can understand you very well, thank you again and you are the number one , best wishes from Chile.

  • @mcd5650 Thank you for the comment.

  • Thanks Teresa for all your wonderful and clear tutorials. It´s so easy to follow your instructions. I van´t get enough of your videos. Many greetings from Italy

  • @Zauberzunge07 Thank you, I appreciate the comment.

  • Your videos are great! I have trouble seeing if you go under one loop or two loops, the front and back loops. Will it make any difference if you do either one? Which one did you do in this video or do you have another preference?

  • @dskhdjk I always go below the two loops at the top of the stitch. It would not hurt anything if you did go through the front or back only. I go through both because I find that is most secure where, one loop may pull up and create a hole.

  • I was up till 2am crocheting! What type of things can I do with chain, dc, sc, tb... just to give me some ideas of how much progress I am making.

  • @urbancyclist1 You can make hats and afghans, just about everything with the single and double crochet. They are the basic stitches.

  • I am a beginner, now starting to get confidence at long last.

  • @urbancyclist1 Great to hear! Keep practicing and you will continue to gain more confidence. :)

  • I've been watching a few of your video's, you're very talented. thank you for sharing.

  • @honeybear172 You are welcome, I appreciate the comment.

  • انا اتابعك منذ فترة طويلة , الحقيقة انك بارعة بما تفعلين.

I wrote in arabic that i have been watching you for long time and you always make an awesome things keep going.

    iam from dubai

  • I Appreciate the comment, thank you. @FIS999

  • Thank you soo much for your videos! im an intermediate crochet-er and i still have a hard time following a pattern... seeing someone else do it really helps!

  • @strgrl424 I appreciate the comment, thank you. :)

  • I just don't get it no matter how many times I watch your videos

  • @charrygirl10101 If you are a beginner, you may want to start with learning the basic stitches first.

  • Thank you, it was so easy for me to follow your instructions. I was taught to crochet as a little girl and had not picked it up again until now that I'm 48. lol Thank you again for bringing the joy back of crocheting and desire to create more crochet items.
