  • Like stunt flying, with hundreds of passengers.

  • Kai Tak for ever!

    Greetings from Argentina!

  • That approach took balls of steel, apparently. And those buildings would've been great for plane-spotting.....

  • Thank you so very much for this video. I used to work at CX as a flight crew during the 90s, and the landings at Kai Tak amazed me every single time. Passengers wowed at every landing was one of those sweet memories of Kai Tak! I miss you Kai Tak! And I miss the good old days. Although things had changed in HK, the old HK is still living in my heart!

  • severe wind drafts

  • tolle Aufnahmen, da war noch fliegerisches Können nötig.

  • amazing kai tak aiport in hong kong. those who experienced it before will never forget the feeling. it so wonderful to watched this video. all the memories back. unforgettable steps to pilot and passenger. 80's and 90's drama sure have this screen people screamed on phone. funny .. especially trying to deliver the important message. ohhhhss god, repeat again .. haha

  • 令人懷念~

  • Thank you for this video....brings tears to my eyes every time.

There is a story, maybe just an anecdote.. but supposedly we (my airline) had a DC-10 Captain (when we flew the DC-10 to Kai Tak) who just could not fly this approach. (Many years ago).....the story goes, after two attempts, he got so frustrated he just gave up.....missed twice.....and a dead-heading senior Captain from the cabin was asked up to replace him. The original "working" Captain retired soon after. LOL....

  • Thanks for excellent video, for once a youtube video with great choice of music !!!

  • i miss this airport so much!!!

  • I can watch this 1000x in a row, reminds me of my old home living in HK during the 90's.

  • Prime real estate downtown for airplane lovers.

  • I grew up in Kowloon Tong and remember sun-bathing on the roof of our two story house. Airplanes would fly over and we would wave and see people in the windows waving back!

  • One of my "life memories" is of the landing at this airport on my first visit to Hong Kong in 1997. My amazement at looking into people's windows in high rise buildings on our approach to this airport serves as my most vivid memory. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to have experienced a landing at this airport. I've landed at the new HK airport numerous times since that 1997 experience--those landings all blend together in my memory. But, not that first one!

  • hi, swissair10, the clip reminds me of all the good memories of the "old HK". For 73 years, Kai Tak had gone through many ups and downs with all diligent HK people. I'm in Sydney now but the "old HK" 70's-90's and early 2000's means so much to me. The society and the spirit back then is so much more positive than now. HK has lost the "uniqueness" somewhat. It's transforming and the government is trying to erase the "British" footprints" and kids will forget the true HK spirit which is sad!

  • OMG These aircraft above these buildings. All day? O.O

  • yes

  • My uncle flew L1011s & DC10s. He has 48 landings at Kai Tak. He says he can remember all 48 of them with perfect clarity, and that the other thousand or so at other airports just kind of blend together and they were like driving to the corner market to get a gallon of milk compared to landing at Kai Tak. His first landing cost the company 3 tires! That had just been put on a week earlier. After that he knew what to do and what not to do.

  • 2:42 Alitalia MD-11 crash

  • Great video. Flew into this airport in 1989. One of the most bizzare experiences ever. Looking into buildings , eye level , only 20 - 30 meters away before landing.

  • 54 people jelly they cant fly a plane as good as this :o

  • Planes... All day... All night...

    My mind after years: WTF?!

  • when I was a kid I didn't think it was so scary. Then when older I look back and think, "I'm ALIVE!" and "man those pilots were amazing! @_@ " this video will make aeronautical engineers dizzy with delight.

  • Keep coming back to this. Excellent video, always makes me smile.

  • nice video!

  • the landing to kai thai is so scary they could just crash

  • Flew into Kai Tak 1996. Could look into people's living rooms just off the wingtips. Truly amazing.

  • Amazing video, thank you for it !!!

  • Good Job! I'd hate to live in those buildings

  • 54 people have never been on a plane...

  • I have video photo of your dragon, princess diana is still alive

  • I JUST SPOT ONE OF YOUR DRAGONS

  • 1:48 Was that a concorde?

    I'm sad now....

  • 2:35 ... epic :D

  • In episode 4 of the new ABC TV show “Pan Am” crew lands at Kai Tak in 1963. The real landings were far more dramatic. Thanks for a great presentation of the thrills and chills of putting her down on 17. Drinks at the Peninsula Hotel later?

    Cheers! Jamie

  • I love this video. Thanks a million!

  • I wish I was born 10 years earlier...to view the marvelous landings on the checkboardhill ><

  • 52 people lived in the glide path :D

  • WTF thats mad

  • I like the music. Gave a nice movie theme to it.

Landing sure can be scary. Landing in Bhutan is a challenge, every time !!! Check it out. It's cool and breathtaking :)

  • Stunning!!!!

  • what is this music? please tell me.

  • Awesome :') closest I'll ever get to this experience is FSX :P my dad said that Kai Tak was simple :P

  • 3:13 747 Varig!

  • OMG that was concorde

  • 2:41 the cameraman stand dangerously on the middle of the road just to firm the plane?

  • That 747 in the beginning looks spectacular but shouldnt he have gone around, he was way off until right before touchdown...

  • I was 5 the last time I used this airport so I have no memories of it but just watching these videos shows it was quite challenging for pilots.. I asked my dad how hard it was to land on it, all he said was. Meh a bit harder then other airports...

  • @GoPensGo377 exactly the same with my dad! :) I was talking to him about Kai Tak and he was just like "Meh. Not what it's cooked up to be."

  • ive only been to this airport a few times and now its gone and i use the new one ha, just got back from hong kong!!! miss it :(

  • imagine the people living in the buildings next to the airport......with the plane so close to the building day and night.

    no sleep lol

  • @YearraeY actually there was a curfew between 12:00am and 6:30am so i suppose it was possible for around 6 and a half hours of sleep.

  • i worked in hong kong and remember it well the final approch i used to shit myself so started to get pissed on the long flight.

  • Missed the day I could almost touch the plane by just raising my hands...

  • great respect for the pilot who flow into kai tak

  • have the chinese not money or place to build a better and safe airport ?

  • @TheKarasakal Kai tak closed down years ago (1998 like the title says) there is a new airport but its not directly in Hong kong. its more like on the outskirts

  • it's so close to the city

  • Flight attendent..."Peanuts? Beer? Adult briefs?"

  • What a great video! Inspired music choice too.

  • Oh, man, good old days, good old HK, what an airport and what a City back then ... I miss you , the Old Hong Kong ... Primary school should not forget to tell our kids about the true and amazing history of HK ... a lot of people has already forgotten about the precious part of the HK story ...

  • @stephensocool123 what do you actually mean with "the old hongkong" - I was there some days ago and in my opinion it's still a really great place - of course with kai tak it would be more fun but... yeah what do you mean with that - it's a firm question i really wanna know.

  • Spectacular and perfect matching of the 633 squadron music. :o)

  • A past-tense miracle

  • I lived there to the airport, it was so close and so impressive!

  • Salute to all those pilots!!

  • Absolutely no room for error, not 1 millimetre!

  • Chek Lap Airport sucks Kok.

  • @fs10inator I don´t think so, an airport is a neutrum, a facility. It can´t provide any sexual actions to humans. Or I just get you wrong and you mean that it sucks the genitiles of other airports, but I´ve never managed before to see some...

The third possibility may be that you just wanted to leave a nice underqualificated meaningless comentary under this video spiced with your impressing ability of using this language.

  • In Hong Kong planes fly you!

  • thumbs up if u watch it until the music stops then watch the video again :)

  • alitalia the baddest dangerous company in the world

  • On UAL flights attendants would have a supply of boxer shorts and panties to hand out after every landing if needed by certain passengers.

  • wow, amazing, and the music is brilliant to go with it :)

Respect for all pilots who land in Kai Tak.

Respekt für alle Piloten, die in Land Kai Tak.

    甲斐はい上陸すべてのパイロットの尊重。

احترام جميع الطيارين الذين في الأراضي نعم كاي.

  • Kai Tak was best airport in the world with pilot's dream.

  • The music is totally fit on the video, just like a movie!!!Great!

I am so amazed how good the technique of all the pilots got!!

The aeroplanes just flew very very close to the buildings!

Thank you for sharing this old stuff but new things to me!!!

  • Lived in Hong Kong for 15years and flew in and out of Kai Tak for many of those - never appreciated how scary it was. It was just another landing or take off!!! WOW!!!

  • @1963Pip Oh, I lived there 3 years, flew in and out 2-3 times per year. I was always scared flying in and out, but I never thought it was actually dangerous! Returning for a visit in 1999, I was actually disappointed by the new airport - so far from the city, and the scariness of the earlier flights, well-handled by the pilots, was replaced by an even more frightening severe drop in the plane's altitude as we landed. I'll take Kai Tak any day!

  • Nostalgia...

  • Flew into Hong Kong for the first time in 1995...... with no warning. Nearly shit myself! LOL..

  • 近距離見到好有現在feel

  • Nothing else in HK has changed, the neon lights, buildings taxis and everything else is exactly the same.

  • @lovesBobothehobo Except nowadays you do see loads of mainlander from CHina in HK as they can travel to Hk easily with a tourist visa. Back then you nearly saw no mainlander during colonial period as it was very difficult for the chinese to go to HK as if they were going to the US.

  • I really enjoy visiting Hong Kong, but seriously you can keep those sideways air landings, I will stick to sailing into port. lol..........

  • This video is one of the wonders of Youtube. Great work and thanks!

  • love the soundtrack, excellent choice

  • Awesome! Many years ago, my Mother 'warned' me about the landing at the old Hong Kong airport, and just like everybody else who heard the stories, I didn't believe it!

And then of course, like everyone else, I saw it for myself. And finally I believed! And it was gob-smacking amazing. A free roller-coaster ride... And I lurved it! :o)

You could almost read the teletext on peoples' TV screens as you went past. It was amazing.

The new airport is wonderful, but RIP Kai Tak... sniff! :o(

  • type in "ski crashes" in the youtube search and click the video with stars in the title to be shocked!

  • ´look on google maps and see what they have done with this great airport :'-(

  • chuck norris arrives in hong kong!!! thumbs up!

  • 1:24 haha sheer madness!

  • seriously i hate chep lap kok more than 777(i rather hate 777)so in my FS if i fly to HK i will fly to Kai Tak never fly to Chep Lap Kok

  • who agree, we can collect sound, and then we can suggest to the Hong Kong/China Government to re-open and re-build kai tak

  • @wisnu1231 China does not manage the affairs of Hong Kong except foreign relations and military defence because Hong Kong is a special administrative regions, she has a "high degree of autonomy" in all matters . Under the principle of "one country, two systems", Hong Kong has a different political system from mainland China, so we cannot suggest to China.

  • @elskerstine Yeah right. No offence but i went on your channel and your first solo flight was in Aug,11,11 so yeah dont lie.

  • @elskerstine

  • their going to fail one of these days

  • 0:07 cue epic music!

  • 45 people love Chep Lak

  • lucky i had the chance to visit hk via kaita and left via chek lap kok in 1998 =)

amazing that being one of the most "dangerous and challenging"... there were close to no accidents.. the only 1 i remember was a china airline plane somehow went off the runway into the sea... i think i was able to see it from my primary sch as it was in tokwawan ... ahhh.. all these gd old memories..

  • why is the plane floating at 0:39?

  • haha, unbelieveable super low flying that have no accident. :) How this is become real? Maybe Buddhism prays? This is also the benefit of building low apts to avoid the 911 accident and keep on humbling attitude. :)

  • 2:35 Now Coming To Honda Store Worldwide the 747 at the fabulous price of 260 million

  • Captain King from Cathy Pacific was one of the best pilots to ever fly with in or out of Kai Tak. He once took me into the brand new 747 simulator. Abrilliant man and his wife wasn't such a bad teacher either.

  • you are not a pilot till you have fully landed at kai tak! lol

  • Wow.. I went to the UK via Hong Kong back in 1997.. I'd forgotten how 'fun' the landing was.

  • Great video!

My dad used to live near the airport, and he said he watched several crashes.

  • Thank you for sharing this video.

It brings back memories to when I was a kid visiting my grandfather. I used cover my ears every time a plane landed.

The last time, I returned to Hong Kong was in 1995. I literally could see right into people's dining tables from the plane.

  • I'm fortunate to visit a lot of wonderful places and airport all over the world but there is one airport that's missing and will be missed; Kai Tak Airport.

Well, you can't have everything I guess ;)

  • The shot at 2:35 looks so lol, its as if the plane is playing hide and seek :)

  • kat tak is korean and means "easy landing".

  • lmao that landing strip is mental

  • They should put a sign there that says: "Highly trained professionals only"

  • why they close kai tak??!?

  • @Luc1590 How about reading the description. Or are you too lazy for that?

  • @MisterHowzat im not american or english. i understand somethings

  • Oh how I miss that landing / airport... Always a highlight of my Asia trips... Always tried for a window seat on the right side... Did it maybe 30-40 times...

  • @snowfan what if it landed from the other end fuckstick?

  • @Airbus294 Nothing better to do with your sorry life than to troll around on YouTube? So who's the fuckstick?

  • 1 PERSON COULD FLY THAT APPROACH

  • I was a flight attendant with Cathay Pacific and we flew over those low-rises and laundry lines with metres to spare and i did live in a top floor flat in the flight path for 18 months. Still miss Kai Tak. One of the quickest & most efficient international airports in the world in its time.

  • DAMN! Imagine having that top apartment!!! Are you kidding me!! Planes flying right over your balcony all day and night.

  • disaster waiting to happen

  • @rockerhippi never will as it was closed since 1998!

  • I really find it criminal and not respectful to indigenous who constantly lived with the fear of gettin a 747 straight in the ass.

  • scary reminder of 9/11

  • @LadyLea34 how?

  • Its the music to 633 Squadron - a brilliant WW2 movie

  • please tell me what is the soundtrack in this video. it's fucking epic

  • If i ever become ruler of Hong Kong, i will re-build and Re-open Kai Tak

    RIP KAI TAK!!!!

  • @Concorde847 you have my support sir ;-)

  • @Concorde847 cool and i will want to be a 747 pilot again lol

  • @Concorde847 Kai Tak better than Chep Lap COCK

  • @Concorde847 YES PLEASE!!! I'll be waiting!!! my home sweet home!

  • @Concorde847 Yes reopen it and maybe your lucky and a big ass 747 crashes into 10 sky scrapers and 200 000 people get's killed

  • I could probably hit it with a rock when its that low XD

  • RIP Kai Tak Airport.

  • The scenes at the end reminds me of old Japanese and Cantonese animes where there was this HUGE muther fucking metropolises and planes usely flew low

  • the song sucxx....

  • JEZUZ!

  • this is brilliant, tks for this video, had fond memories of landing here, tried on the b737 simulator and it was great !

  • 45 ppl dont mind the video but hate the indiana jones music!

  • Indiana Jones in coming :)

  • Great Job, very good video.

  • Hong Kong lost it's waaahh when we lost this airport. Those who do not know HK it means we lost our exciterment and what makes this city so wonderful. Goodbye Kai Tak, and thank you.

  • why the dont fly straight on to the airport?

  • @Knoedel1993 because of its geographical condition...many mountains nearby...

  • @Knoedel1993

because kai tak have a giant hill on her back

  • I find it funny how the Alitalia at 0:55 lands on the grass to the Right of the Runway, it is typical Alitalia

  • Im sooooooooooooo pissed, they built a new airport there, it will never be as good as kai tak :(
