There's not many big time cities where you can go to a gorge, beach, mountains, rivers and lakes so easily like you can around the Portland area. The Northwest of Oregon is truly the best.

Being from Oregon (born and raised) I got a false sense of what most cities in the U.S. should be like. Meaning spoiled. I have also lived elsewhere and Portland is unbelievably clean (yes sterile) since the rain makes it clean. :P We could use some more sun but overall it is very beautiful, especially in the summer! Such a feel of community with all the downtown events. Portland isn't too big and not too small!

@misafan09 The downside to living here is the lack of sunshine. We're originally from California and the almost constant sunshine from March - October was cut in half to about late June - September. As most have said the rain isn't the tough part, areas in the south get more precipitation than we do. The tough part is going from Oct-May with maybe 2 weeks of solid sunshine total. You get used to it. The trade off is natural beauty everywhere you do here and PERFECT weather from late June-Sept.

We moved to Portland from California and the rain doesn't make it miserable. I find it kind of relaxing. If you really hate rain though you wouldn't be happy here. Thing is when I was in California if it rained 2 days in a row it was "storm watch" all over the news with "triple doppler" updates every commercial break and interviews with people complaining about the rain. I just think Californians by nature are wussies.

I saw 5 Blacks, and 2 Asians (shopping bags from forever 21). I know because that's what all the suburbanites carry out here.

Is that because most of these people are tourists? Rather than inhabitants? Like going to Times Sq. here does not make a good representation of NYC'rs.

@TheFaustianMan Like all places, it depends upon where you go. I live about 20 minutes south of portland and about 1/6 of the people here are of asian descent.

There's black people, brown people, yellow people, and whatever other variation there is. But yeah, I think that overall, portland is around 75% white people. Does that bug you? I suppose in the forest it doesn't matter. That's the best place to be in Oregon anyway.
