  • Right. 15,000 launches, I've got the T shirt. The driver/pilot would like a predictably steady pull, gearboxes change all that! A high tech - read BMW - gearchange can keep power output constant. It also fails in use and has to be fixed. Big engines with a fluid flywheel are brutal but predictably reliable. But! I have also driven systems where the gear was selected, depending on wind, manual clutch used for control, drum selection by standing on brake on 'other' drum, diff. doing the work!!! Mm

  • Hmm, bloody slow YouTube. They've changed their post comment method and you can't tell if you've posted already!

  • Was this a quantitive experiment? Are there figures for altitude gained, wind speed (at altitude), launch speed, launch angle etc? Were they all the same glider and pilot? GJ if yes! What was the conclusion?

  • No, not really (x4)! This video was only made to rebut suggestions made on a Yahoo winch design group that automatic gearboxes that change gear are a problem.

  • Yeah , I agree! I heard that there's one glider winch manufacture that will have no transmission. Some new drive called the "Hydrostatic drive"

  • It will have to have a transmission, or otherwise nothing will happen! You are probably refering to the 'Hydrowinch' which is based on hydraulics, but this is still under development, doesn't give any advantages that I can see over a good conventional winch, and may be considerably more expensive.
