Anybody realise here, the moment you take an AK away from a dead insurgent's hands, they're just a civilian? In most cases. The new fighters coming to Afghanistan seem to be professional & efficient as a fighting force.

The people who bitch about civilian deaths in war, done by "terrorists" or soldiers, doesn't have a very firm grasp on the fact that civvies have been getting targeted, if not inadvertently, to complete a military objective in modern warfare at least since the Sedan War in 1871.

To clarify on military objectives, let's look at 9/11 really quick. I refuse to accept that random attack on freedom bullshit that barely anyone looks at.

WTC= Economic infrastructure of the US

Pentagon= Military brain of the US

Flight 93= most sources indicate it was headed for the Capitol building if it wouldn't have been stopped.

Those are three planned out attacks that can easily be seen as valid military targets. If a conventional force attacked the US, I can see them doing the same.

As far as the defense contractors making money and not spending that money on other things. Well, yeah, that idea is ideal but not realistic. It would be awesome if it was as simple as that, but the world is no utopia. Moreover, the US is capitalist (most effective system, not perfect though). You shouldn't be surprised here. Now, overspending (such as in the F-22s, Airborne laser, etc) is another issue which changes according to the circumstances. But defense itself should not be ignored.

Defense is different from spending trillions of dollars to bomb a bunch of poor villages in the desert of a country who could give a shit what happens in America. Now that they've been attack by the US, they'll join up with the people you're so afraid of, and cause an even bigger mess. War solves nothing. It only makes the problem even bigger.
