  • I tried with those "mentos" and didnt work. Someone told me i need to get a diferent type of mentos?

  • can id o this as my science project?

  • I sort of just want coke now

  • NOTHING!!! XD

  • How did I get here?

  • That guy had all that time to test options, but didn't test putting the Mentos(R) in the water at the water's freezing point so the dissolving (smoothing of the surface) is at a minimum, which is apparently the key to the trick.

  • Salt doesnt make it "impossible" to freeze water. All it does it lower the freezing point. It's true that saltwater won't freeze in the kinds of temperatures you get in a northern city, but with low enough temperatures you can certainly freeze seawater

  • OMG this is from Colorado!!!!

  • 1:22. did i really just hear that?

  • I was curious about this

  • i would still like to chew on one of those mentos...

  • The 1st wrong he did is he used a DIET Coke.

  • what about freezing salt into icecubes? shouldn't that work?

  • Look how they are amazed by NOTHING!

  • Mento? It is MENTOS singular.

  • o.o

Put the cubes in when the water is about freezing, it'll work.

  • Painful banter between the two guys...

  • Sugarcubes?

  • gzz let the guy talk...

  • What would happen if you'd freeze some salt inside an ice cube?

  • @niels241 Don't think anything would really happen, the reaction is the bubbles attaching themselves to the powered salt as its put in in a heap, the salt in the ice would a)be dissolved in the water before they became ice cubes and b) the slow-release of the salt wouldn't be enough to trigger the reaction.

  • Isn't the tune at the very end from the music of CNET's 404 podcast?

  • Why not put salt in a capsule and then freeze that into an icecube?

  • u r d man !!!!!

  • So if you made a salted ice cube could that technically work? Assuming of course that the salt doesnt dissolve?

  • Haha he pours a new glass when there's already like nine full glasses ??

  • @theCrazyDshow I guess it's because they want you to be sure that the drink hasn't been fixed or been in a glass so long that some carbondioxide has dissolved.

  • @theCrazyDshow Americans.

  • I like mentos :(

  • My sugestio is to use the coke while it's very cold, so the solubility of the gas in the drink is still high. With ambient temperature coke it will never work, because the coke lost all it's gas

  • the coke is completely out of gas. You used one that is too hot, it obviously wouldn't work even if the mentos was rocket fuel

  • @joaopmm92 then why do those last glasses work?

  • Steve Spangler

    9News Science Guy

    9News

  • Y U NO USE REGULAR COKE !?

  • oooohhhh....

  • They were talking at the same time during most of the vid and its annoying

  • 9News? Yeaaaahhh, right, news....

  • Or you could find a way to instantly freeze the Ice Cube

  • what about a salt cube?

  • @ksdlkfjdsg water diloutes salt

  • @ksdlkfjdsg I was going to say that!

  • @ksdlkfjdsg I was thinking the exact same thing.. XD

Guess I've got something to do tomorrow..

  • @ksdlkfjdsg Awesome idea is awesome!!! :D

  • @ksdlkfjdsg salt stops water from freezing... thats y seawater doesnt freeze and y we put salt on the roads so that ice doesnt come on it

  • @ksdlkfjdsg Salt wouldn't work either.

  • @ksdlkfjdsg put some salt in water... see what happens with the salt... doh

  • What happens when you freeze some salt into the ice cube then? Gotta try this... I'm interested now :)

  • @omega86yu Oh, wow, I don't know if you realized what you just wrote, but, unless you want to add salt to the diet coke in a dissolved way, if you freeze some salt into the ice cube, it will first dissolve, then freeze. It'll no stay as salt crystals inside the ice cube...

  • @pokespa11se Unless the salt was powder calcium carbonate or barium sulfate (unless you wanna risk poisoning your friend).

  • @omega86yu Just, how.

  • @omega86yu

Same problem, while freezing the salt it will dissolve slightly and it's surface will smooth out. You might as well just drop a mentos into someones drink while they're not looking.

  • Nice to see they understand that diet coke is only good for experments

  • this might work in a closed cup, like the ones you get in mcdonalds

  • Oh course it does not work, you are using Diet Coke.

  • @ReoJee It has to be diet coke

  • @ReoJee if its not DIET it doesnt work -__-

  • @ksdlkfjdsg Yes, it does.

  • @ksdlkfjdsg Actually, it works with sugared coke as well. The main reason people use diet is that it's not sticky.

  • @ksdlkfjdsg But isn't he using Diet Coke?

  • when he put the liquid in the glass, the drink get off the gas

  • You are complete idiots the carbon dioxide of the coke escapes while you take it off the bottle..thats why in the serious experiments they put them quickly inside sticked together by a tape and close the bottle immediately...jeez

  • So if saltwater makes it "explode", will a salt water icecube do the trick?

  • Yeah... no put it inside that bottle.

  • Dry ice is kinda good stuff too

  • arent these ones coated?... :D

  • The act of pouring the Diet Coke also releases most of its Carbon Dioxide, which is why the final test with the regular Mentos was so disappointing. The only way to do it for real is to drop them in newly opened bottles of Diet Coke.

  • if I freeze salt then it will work?

  • idiots,wasting good coke

  • @andreytripleh that was diet coke..

  • I want spend my entire life on college and be the "9news Science guy"

    xD

  • It`s a diet coca that`s why...

  • @TheRenosree mentos works much better with diet coke ;)

  • @TheRenosree Uhm. You have to use diet coke..

  • makes me so thirsty

  • but... can you freeze salt? if you had like an insta freezer and a very very salty saltwater..

  • @Dragonicafan

No. If saltwater ice cubes do work, the reaction would be instantaneous, and the prank would be ruined.

  • Distilled water at freezing, but not actually frozen + Gel capsule full of salt = Dropping gel capsule into the water will freeze it instantly. Boom, now you have something cool.

  • salt water does freeze. just at a lower temp...

  • @LilRasse salty water doesnt freeze

  • what if? you make an icecube with: salt+mentos+water? doesnt it reverse the smoothening effect?

  • @LilRasse Nope. The salt would dissolve and it would become salt water, which would still smooth out the Mento.

  • i try drinking it lol

  • but what if you drink it....

  • Here is another experiment for you to try. You can make salt cubes by mixing water and salt, even though it dissolves will it still work?

  • I really don't know?????

  • You have to put them in the ice cube tray at freezing point, 32 degrees, so they can't dissolve.

  • the first experiment when NOTHING happens! I mean seriously! Absoloutly NOTHING! It's so interesting! Thumbs up if that was your reaction.

  • Eeww

  • The prank is, now you have a horrible tasting diet coke. :P

  • Painting smoothes it out, thats why it doesn't work with colored mentos

  • @peterrocks301 YOU DONT SAY....

  • @peterrocks301 It doesnt? :/ works for me ._.

  • yall are takeing the fun out of these experments :(

  • guess what happens to it...NOTHING!!!!

  • Tap 3 and it says "Larry"

  • I was waiting for that positive control the whole episode, thought you weren't going to do it like a good scientist.

    Good job though

  • Where is your positive control?

  • Someone ultratrolled the internet.

  • ewwwwwwww Y WOULD YOU PUT SALT AND MENTOS IN i tried to prank someone. my friend nearly threw up XD

  • @MinecraftAddicts011 That doesn't make any sense. How could your friend have nearly thrown up if the salts reaction to the diet coke is instant? It would have foamed up before your friend had a chance to taste it.

  • put salt in the ice naow!

  • Mentos and soda = disgusting soda lolololol

  • @meggie590 Water at its freezing point = water at 0 degree celcius = not water but ice. You will never find water at 0 degree because if its 0 its already been solidified. So you go try to squeeze mentos into ice and tell me how that goes...

  • @IAmReinrex2 First off Salt water..but secondly distilled water can be supercooled at 0C and still be a liquid.

  • tap 1 repeatedly and...beat box

  • ITS MEN-TOSS NOT MEN-TOES!

  • its mentos not mento

  • Your supposed to put the water at it's freezing point b4 you put the mentos in

  • "It's all over the internet that it does!"

    Yeah, it's kinda like that...

  • put a mento in some dissolving jell like in pills

  • you could say that the salt is crushed up ice.

  • Nothing happened because he used diet coke !

  • That broadcaster is lame.

  • Science!

  • i think that maybe a company could resolve this thing out, and then just sell the methos ice cubes to do the pranks

  • He told the world he has no life ha ha everytine he said he did somthin he said because he had nothing to do in his life ha ha

  • If you quickly lowered the water with mentos into liquid Nitrogen, then it would probably freeze before smoothing the surface too much. Though maybe when the ice melts it would soften it...

  • Put it in VERY cold Water Then Freeze

  • @FeedFam Can't tell if trolling or just stupid

  • @FeedFam Did you not watch the video?

  • @FeedFam you do realize that Hot water freezes faster than cold water right?

and either way it becomes smoothed out before it freezes

  • couldnt you use like roughened plastic beads?

  • if you'll try it with aspirin just get away fast

  • can you freeze salt in ice and get a reaction?

  • @5xfunny No. The salt will dissolve in the ice. You can freeze sand in ice and it may work.

  • Steven could u dye dry ice then make different smoke colors???

  • try to cover the mentos with a NAPKINS

  • sure it works? all i know is that it wont work with fruity mentos. LOL

  • The soda gets bubbles on the mentos rough surface so why would you liquify a mento?

  • @vincereviews Like he said, he had a microwave and nothing to do.

  • Actually u have to try it with Regular Coke. Not Diet Coke.

  • @cr5zyg0y dang it, we bought cherri coke . lol

  • But bbut it was on the internet... it must be true uve got to be kidding me

  • @SupaUploadah -99999 degrees doesnt exist. only -273 degrees which is 0 Kelvin. if you can go beyond -273 you probably get the noble prize for science. or you will create another universe ????

  • @SupaUploadah mentos are solid at room temp.

  • @VenTzxBellicose bad idea, it could explode and injure someone.

  • You have to do it in a bottle stupid!!!

  • @schweij doesn't matter...

  • NOTHIN!!!

  • ok so the question is not why doesnt it work, its how do we MAKE it work?

  • @Butterfunky7 It would be really impossible to make this work unless you wanted to go through a lot of trouble. You could freeze two separate ice cube halves, hollow out a place in both halves for the mentos to go, then stick the ice cube halves together with a drop of water in between and freeze. That would probably work because the mentos would never actually touch water, only ice.

  • @Mac1634 and when the ice melts it touches the mentos

  • NOTHING

  • is dangerous because he eat it it will explode? xD

  • they say,NOTHING! alot in thiss video

  • Put a little bit of salt in the ice cube.. and put in a freshmint., and if you put in the right consistency salt, it shouldn't react fast enough to flow over, but keep the mint nice and jagged so that the carbon dioxide can react normally.. That's my theory at least..

  • @MrFThree You're as sharp as a marble.

  • so does that mean if u mix salt and water together and freeze it then it will explode?

  • do this with freshmints not mentos.

  • Why not put the mentos in those non-toxic on-touch-with-water disolvable bags then freeze them in water? :O

  • @DIMATIF wouldnt it dissolve in freezing?

  • Hey Steve Im the one that came up with this idea... in fact I made a video of it... I have not posted it on youtube yet but its all over the internet through Metacafe.... anyways It has a lot to do with how you freeze the mentos. You have to have your timing right.

  • Ive done this and it worked for me....

  • if you poor it, you lose a lot of all the gas... :(

  • We need to put cola in some ones salt.

  • i know the eaxed kind the wax will come off and the craters will stay and freezze(thery) or froxen solt water ice cube

  • So, wait. Hypothetically, if I found a way to hollow out an ice cube, and place the Mentos inside, it would work?

  • salt and ice cubes?

  • mentos and salt maby

  • same tune to the 404 podcast :)

  • how about making saltwater icecubes then.

  • maybe it works with pain killer instead

  • maybe it works with asperine instead

  • it is the coke on the suface area with the mentos because mentos has a bunch of holes in it, it has nothing to do with what the mentos is rlly made of, when he put the mentos in the water to freeze it the surface dissolved before the water froze.....

  • @titsandcheese well done for telling us exactly what he told us.. doosh !!

  • dude. YOU.ARE.AWESOME.

  • "Nothing!", *Place Explodes*

  • Doesnt the mento add a lot of carbon dioxide causing the air pressure in the bottle to erupt?

  • 2:30 kind used with optical the craziness!

  • Nothing beats a fly anyway.

  • so what happens if i put some salt in my ice cube?

  • @shabuyamorningstar it dissolves...

  • use an alka seltzer instead

  • lol you give me the bad joy of doing this to my mom

  • Mentos shells are a catalyst for this?

  • ugh.. the captions are just funny...

  • what if you put loads of pieces of mentos shell inside of a pill capsule, and then put the capsule in ice. like that the cratered pieces of shell would not lose their nucleation effect, and would react with the cola once the capsule dissolves.

i wonder if the effect would still be as potent if the mentos where crushed like that, or if it would be better to use salt, or... could you possibly make ice cubes that are frozen in such a way that they cause the effect all by them self?

  • EPIC FAIL

  • "I liquefied a Mento, 'cause why wouldn't you?" Classic

  • Man I was actually gonna try that. :-((( dang!

  • @cherylsmith75 same

  • haha that mark dude sounds funny the whole video

  • but what happens if u put salt in the ice cubes?????
