  • Half Man Half Biscuit- they've ruined this for me. Damn them all to hell!

  • *whistle* Pew Pew Barny Migrew Tuffit Dibble Grub *whistle*

  • I always thought that were so sedate and dignified for people rushing to save others from a catastrophe of some kind.

  • they are so organised, and certainly no staff cuts.

  • Captain Flack (Whistle) is the only one with a moustache. Barney McGrew does not acknowledge his name! 'Pugh, Pugh' are twins. ?Dibble is the tallest! Cuthbert is 'in the background. No info on him! But 'Grub' is an epic plum!!! But his wife is a sweetie!

  • Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grub!

    OMG I remember this.

Think H&S would have something to say about the Fire Brigade if they were to travel like that nowdays.

  • I've listened to this over and over for a couple of minutes now, and I'm convinced he says "Tuffbert" (or however you'd go about spelling it) rather than "Cuthbert".

    Try listening for a C sound, you won't hear it. It's definately a T.

  • @97channel Get your ears waxed, or some decent speakers! Your hearing is as good as your spelling! It's DEFINITELY.

  • @herrick46 Well, thanks for taking the time to advise me on matters concearning the quality of my hearing, my audio equipment and my spelling. Maybe I could offer you advice on the quality of your attitude, in return?

  • @97channel Cuthbert! Yes! Tuthbert is a silly name! PMSL!

  • i was there when the riots were on

  • fuck me.I was lookin for the rave tune! wheres me fuckin doves?this is awesome!

  • The Trumpton Fire Brigade in full magnificence.

  • @bengusandlex YES - in FULL magnificence is the ONLY way to describe this

  • my uncle jim was a fireman in trumpton. he would tell us about some of the goings on in that station.in fact the locals nicknamed it the knocking shop.ill tell you more later.

  • In 1999/00 the BBC brought out an advert on past children's TV shows, it shown a young boy walking through the scenes of the likes of Trumpton, Bagpuss and many more of my beloved childhood shows, IF ANYONE has any ideas where i can find the advert or any information on how I can see it would be much appreciated. thanks

  • I think the clip you are looking for is this one. Search the following in youtube or look in my favourites

bbc small people children's TV promo 1998-1999

    Hope this helps.

  • The constant sex, swearing and violence in this show led to it being hastily cancelled. The episode 'Dibble and Grubb Raise Cthulhu' was the last straw for an exasperated TV network, and the axe fell....

  • wow no seat belts, those were the days

  • @littlesaltway101 The 6 o'clock whistle waltz at the buscuit factory in Chigley is real Heavy, head banging to this is COMPULSORY. Watch the workers who aren't dancing...

  • I saw the LP of this yesterday in a charity shop! How many TUNES of Trumpton could there possibly be on an LP? Mm I bet blagger56 knows! LOL.

  • @joelarama No, I don't...but you could have bought it for me for Christmas ;-)

BTW, how many songs are there on the album?

Are they the originals or have they been funked up?

  • Anyone else hearing "They see me rollin'...they hatin'"?

  • Does it really matter?

  • health and saftey right outa the window with the firemen!

  • The fire engine has to go that slow because it's in a very tight turning circle, having to go around the same 4 houses, lamp-post and pillar box, again and again. Trumpton being quite a small place, has some short circular streets which the fire service has to drive round and round and round until the song finishes. Not that it matters, seeing as they never needed to get anything that quickly, seeing as they never put out a single fire the entire series.

  • No it is Pugh, Pugh and not Hugh Pugh

  • anyone got guitar tab for the music?

  • anyone got guitar tab for the music?

  • Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew ... sod it, let's go the go to the pub.

  • Take a trip to trumpton? :D

  • Brilliant stuff, the first pugh is well cool the way he gets on at the back.

  • Brilliant. Remember it like yesterday.

    Those were the days.

  • the good old days

  • Blagger56 there is only two Pughs Pughs not four) The fire crew names are Pugh! Pugh! Barney McGrew! Cuthbert! Dibble! Grubb!"[

  • 0:24 Barney Mcgrews a-reving that engine! :P Loved this since I was little and whenever it came on I was sing along :D Pugh, Pugh, Barney Mcgrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grubb xD Captain Flakk ftw

  • the reason they go slow are the damned speed humps and sleeping policemen..the council has a lot to answer for.....

  • absolute great blast from the past !! although all my four children watched it ,still brings back memories of being a child myself-and so much better than all that fake crap today !! xx

  • I lived off Trumpton when i was small! It's epic! Thanks for uploading :D xxx

  • Hi,

Can anyone tell me why this is in colour for 1966.

BBC 2 did not go colour until 1967 and BBC1 did not go colour until 1969.

    Cheers

  • @matsui2001

Trumpton was made by Gordon Murray Puppets Productions in 1966 & first broadcast in Jan 1967. Before Trumpton was Camberwick Green & after Trumpton was Chigley. Known as The Trumptonshire Trilogy. The stop motion puppet animation was chosen instead of string marionettes as it was thought they looked old fashioned. The animators Bura & Hardwick insisted to film them with both colour & monochrome cameras knowing that colour tv would be broadcast in the uk in the near future.

  • @jamesclarke1968 Big thank you for that information.

Nice that people sometimes forward think, If it had been filmed in monochrome only I wonder if it would have been as popular?

  • @jamesclarke1968 Nice info. Thank you.

  • @matsui2001

Chilldren's programmes were designed to be repeated for many years. For example, Andy Pandy was repeated from 1952 until 1970, when a colour series was made. By making the Trumptonshire series in colour, the series were repeatable for at least the whole 1970's, while if they had been in B&W, they would have had to be re-recorded or disposed of in the 1970's. Also, back then few programmes for toddlers were filmed full scale or in real-time, so colour reproduction was much cheaper.

  • @matsui2001 Even earlier, Stingray 1962 and Thunderbirds 1964 were made in colour on 35mm film.

  • @matsui2001 Wow! Didn't know this! V. Interesting! In my family house, we got colour TV in about 1971/2! Let me know if U find out!

  • "Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grubb"

Learnt it when i was 7 - 8 and still can remember it :)

  • I remember this scene very well. Trumpton was broadcasted on the Dutch television in the early seventies.

  • I seem to remember Trumpton also had its own motorbike cop called PC McGary (divisional number 452),,or am I just imagining things?..

  • @mistofoles No, he was based at camberwick Green in the local police house (remember when we actually had LOCAL village policemen) but his patch covered Chigley AND Trumpton.

It is a little known fact that HEARTBEAT, the series set in a fictional Yorkshire village about the adventures of a local bobby on the beat as it were, was based loosely on the autobiography and memoir which he wrote when he retired from the force in 1980.

    It was called, simply "452 - A policeman's story"

  • @blagger56 oh how I wish we could go back to the days when a bobby knew his patch

In fact I wish we could go back in time

    Thanks

  • wow that brings back memorys!

  • Unharnassed man in mobile fire ladder gantry. Flagrant breach of Health and Safety regulations.

  • This has to be one of the most sensible threads on youtube. I'm serious!

  • Place would have burnt down the length of time it takes them to move.

  • @adebarde1 Thats probably why there was never actually any fires !!!!

  • BTW. I was the one who played the guitar on this film. I don't always talk about it! It was an acoustic guitar I bought in 1965 for £8! My Mum thought that I was buying hymn books!

  • In my childhood this was broadcasted on the Dutch tv.

  • Aww I remeber watching this as a kid, along with Camberwick Green. True, they didn't attend any fires, but firmen don't just deal with fires, I recall they did mostly rescue work - the cats up tree variety lol

Kids programmes were so much better when I was a kid, Animal Magic, Noggin the Nog, Tales of The Riverbank, Belle and Sebastion, Robinson Crusoe, The Clangers, Mary Mungo & Midge, The Banana Bunch, The Flashing Blade, The Herb Garden - oh happy times!

  • They were never called to a fire though.

  • Barney Magrew always looks like he is asleep, he needs to retire. LOL.

  • so so funny used to love watching this what a blast from the past good old times hey

  • omg .. i love this omg . i rememberd the names .. omg . omg om g

  • if all fire engines drove at that speed wed burn to fuckin death

  • ...Speed of that thing.

  • Nice, but it's incomplete. I'd like to see this in it's entirety. The bit where they go passed the same 5 houses, (and pillar box), over and over again.. They never attended a fire for one simple reason. Fire was very difficult to animate then! They did blow smoke onto a bee's nest, once, though. But, they cheated by having the character still when the smoke appeared. All good fun, though.

  • Great video...... I didnt notice back in the day that the fire engine was "lowered" and was running on red wheels....... the "crew" also see abnormally tall, but back then 30 years ago, I thought it was the best programme on TV, and compared to whats on now still is............

    Dibbler. (no relation to Dibble)

  • I seem to remember the fire engine driver having cotton wool for eyes.

  • its great great to see the Trumpton fire brigade however that fire engaine isn't have slow which is probably just as well as there were never any fire in Trumpton unlike Blue Watch from Londons Burning who were always on call outs for fire & other insidents but which is better Trumpton fire brigade or Blue Watch, there only one way to find out FIIIIGHHHT!

  • @gallafey dude, tone down on the crack.

  • very good

  • Isn't Dibble really tall, Between Cuthbert & grubb, who must be tall, 6"8' ?

  • Now if these guys turned up every time someone leaves the toaster unsupervised at work, we wouldn't have the same old predictable "phwoar"s from the women...

  • If I look at a sexy woman at work, I get- Typical man!!! When the fire engine turns up, there ain't a dry seat in the office!!

  • @martynpank Yeah, and that is just the guy's seats LOL

  • What a wonderful reminder of this gentle children's classic. A great bit of nostalgia for me and my g/friend and a good giggle too. Thanks a lot YouTube.

  • this is daddys fav saying as hes been served dinner each nite :0

  • Wasn`t this just great? (And all other youngsters programmes of that era.)

  • Pugh, Pugh, Barney Magrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grub.... Anyway I always thought Pugh & Pugh where twins....still have to click my fingers to this tune, those firemen where extra cool happy memories lol.

  • Hugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Tuthbert, Dibble and grubb!!

  • Actually, that fire engine is as fast as any other. They go that slow with the music playing so they can cruise for chicks.

  • That is the funniest comment thanks for sharing the thought lol.

  • @Randallw0rth hahahaha I like that hahaha funny coz my grandad was a fireman in the 1950's & his engine had a bell!!

  • @Randallw0rth... that is so bang on!lol..

  • Cuthbert, not tuffett.

  • Its pugh, pugh, barney magrew, tuffett, dibble and grubb.

  • pugh, pugh, Barney-McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grubb!

  • Really don't know why people are giving j0andc0 'thumbs downs' for making a human error. Appreciation is still being shown. I've just given a 'thumbs up', bringing the score back up to -1. Come on, people, let's get the rating above zero at least!

    :-)

  • Fantastic show this was, when I was a kid.

  • my dad made that :D i love this!

  • Don't mess with Barney McGrew!

  • Just think of how many milk floats tried to over take that engine.

  • has to be the slowest fire engine in histoery lol but i love it!

  • and no sambos then...no politically correct rubbish to spoil it

  • Er,,,,actually there was another bell on the front of the engine but it has not been seen for a while......come to think of it neither has firefighter leeroy!!!!

  • It is PUGH PUGH (PUGH PUGH) Barney McGrew, Cuthbert Dibble and Grubb. For goodness sake, LOOK - LOOK, see the resemblance, they were TWINS, I say again, Twins. Their childhood ambition was to be a fireman, and LOOK - LOOK, they realised their ambition.

And if you look carefully, none of them wore poncy modern fire retardent clothing like the nancy boy firemen of today. These chaps were REAL men, in a tough world, constantly risking their lives in the line of duty for their fellow puppets.

  • A DNA test should sort this out.

  • @blagger56

    They ALL look the same

    For clarity:

    From the Trumpton website -

Alison Prince wrote the scripts for the Trumpton series and co-wrote the lyrics for the Trumpton songs. She was responsible for the "Pugh, (Pugh), Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grubb!" catchphrase - probably the most famous line in all of the Trumptonshire programmes.

  • @blagger56 Pugh & Pugh are twins. Geoff & Colin, they grew (not Barney McGrew!) up in Essex before moving to Trumpton, Trumptonshire. I know them fairly well. They retired in 1979 with a handsome pension. Captain Flack gave them both Gold carraige clocks. Pugh (Colin) has since passed away, but Geoff lives happily in Somerset with his wife Mary. They have 2 children. If anyone wants to know about Dibble, the tall one, then let me know. We are drinking buddies, & boy, can he drink!

  • @martynpank I'd heard Dibble was a bit of a p**sh ead, but I just wouldn't believe it. I guess he is like that because of the stress of the job all those years ago. Firemen back then were real men, as I have said, and there was no namby pamby counselling for them then, no tears, no risk assessments. Just do the job, the risk is all part and parcel of it. As I have said, not a poncy "modern day firefighter" but a real puppet in a puppets world. My hat comes off to him. Give him my best wishes.

  • @blagger56 "but a real puppet in a puppets world" How true! ....& I understand what you are saying about H&S! Cuthbert, for example, broke his foot, during a 'Cat stuck up a tree' incident. Did he 'harp' on about- "Oooh, my rights? No! He was at work the very next day, rescuing a 'Mayors Hat' from..........somewhere! (Can't remember)!

  • @martynpank From a tree as I recall. Real men, life threatening danger, day in day out.

  • @blagger56 Oh God, you are so right! By the way, as we are now having a frank discussion. Did you know.......Don't tell anyone........Shhhh! But, Chippy Minton is Bi! .....Having a go on one of the soldiers from 'Pippin Fort' in Camberwick! Keep it to yourself! ....& under NO circumstances tell Captain Snort! Actually, this was told to me by Dr Mop. Keep it to yourself & don't put it on the YouTube thread!

  • @martynpank But what about Grubb?

  • @mistofoles Oh, Grubb! He was fine, Never any trouble. Sheila Grubb, his Wife, was brilliant! Always made cakes for the after-band concert do!

  • @blagger56 thanks mate nice to know some 1 appreciates us

  • its actually Hugh, Pugh, barney, mcgrew, cuthbert, dibble and grub

  • @SCAROBOROS pugh pugh not hugh the butmunch

  • @blagger56 They all look the same, how can you tell who are twins?

  • @walshiiii they may look the SAME, but only the twins look ALIKE. There is a subtle difference. You look the same as your best mate, but you do not look ALIKE. hopen thet clarifies it for you,

    best

  • @blagger56 -Outstanding Firefighters they were. Loved these openings as a kid, still do. Marvellous, simply Marvellous.

  • @blagger56 Risking their lives? ... a cat stuck up a tree was their most dangerous task!

  • Pugh, Pugh. Period! They were twins.

  • My only complaint is that it was too short!! It cut off just before the houses scrolled past a stainionary fire engine! Oh the joys of the 1960s. I could watch these all day!!

  • My boys watched this on cable a few nights ago, and my eldest said in his best yorkshire accent." I'm sure that bloke shouldn't be driving...... he's got no eyes".

Perhaps thats why the fire chief keeps looking at him?????????????????

  • Comment removed

  • Cuthbert Pugh Hugh and all that ....its better than boring rubbish EASTENDERS....the biggest loads of bollocks on Tv......at least these characters have more sense of humour than old fart Aunt Dot ....glad they finually getting shot of her ...no pun intended

  • lol at all the Pugh/Hugh arguments on here

  • Its pugh, pugh... for gods sake they were TWINS.... did anyone bother to check the official website. Wars were started over lesser arguments than this !

  • its hugh first not pugh

  • its pugh pugh, they were brothers

  • I was always Grubb. I used to love Trumpton and Camberwick Green. amazing programmes :D

  • Its Pugh, Pugh, barney magrew, tuffet, dribble and grubb.

  • Cuthbert not tuffet

  • They can't make 'em like that anymore...

  • Correct, seems some people need to learn how to spell

  • there names also rhyme quite well ! !

  • its pew,pew actually. Was on telly the other night. They are twins.

  • Love it!!!

  • That's the first time i've watched it 'stoned ' god it's even better

  • for attending presumably a fire, tht engine is moving ridiculously slow lmao

  • OMG Epic, lol. I watch this not that long ago on Nick, and my mum came in and said why are you watching Trumpton, Good times.

  • The BBC don't show them now, no ethnics I suppose!

  • A Wonderous Classic , Thankyou !

  • Me too - I'm back in front of the telly with my tea!

  • SUDDENLY!!!

    :)

  • Pew, Pew, Barney, McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grub

  • pew ,hew, barney,mcgrew apparently.

  • are you SURE about that? o.O

  • Comment removed

  • Hi,

it is Pwe, Pwe... as they are twins - which is why they are standing so close to one another.

    Thanks for posting x

  • It's Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew (for some reason he get's his full title for being the driver) Cuthbert, Dibbly, Grub.

  • I thought it was Hugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grub

  • No it's definately Pugh, Pugh, I listened to it through my headpnones to check (I know i'm a little bit sad lol).

  • Common mistake, a lot of people thought it was Hugh!

    They were brothers!

  • hugh, pew, barney, mcgrew, cuthbert, dibble, grub

  • But there's only six firemen there! Sounds weird but Barney McGrew is one person? considering the way it's said.

  • yes one person

  • Barney McGrew is the driver thats why he gets the full title.

  • The BBC kept all the Trumpton episodes in pristine condition from 1966 but binned all episodes of Top of the Pops.

Intelligent at the BBC aren't they!

  • I heard they taped over lots of old episodes of Doctor Who too

  • Brilliant..used to eat my tea watching this as a kid ....

  • CLASSIC!!!

  • SUPURB!!!

  • Excellent

  • thay were the days when. the best days as a kid when you come home from school and sit down and watch tv on the bbc at 4.o clock. those were days as a kid.
