These guys are veteran musicians and they sound fresher than any of the freakin younger bands out there. The leader of the band (Mike Rutherford) is from the mid 1960's in his music career.
I think the album was titled that way for two reasons: Paul Carrack is pretty popular internationally in his own right, and Mike wanted to acknowledge his long time contribution to the band, the second reason was the death of second lead vocalist Paul Young (All I Need Is A Miracle, etc.,) in 1999. It was not the same band, really. It was mostly just Mike & Paul and Mike wanted it to be read that way.
i wonder if it is to acknowledge that Paul Carrack has his own career/goals and his own Great albums/music!
I don't mind the M&M + PC at all.
I love PC! period! I fell in love with him two years ago and never knew about M&M before. I just kept hearing 'silent running' on the radio and wanted to get the cd.
anything PC does is all right with me- he is my favorite artist besides John Denver and Rissi Palmer.
@TheUgreenagreen Yeah, but it's still a strange idea. Phil Collins didn't do a whole lot of writing in Genesis before around 1980, after which Genesis wasn't all of a sudden presented as "Genesis + Phil Collins".
Something must've happened to Carrack's ego. That said, I wish Genesis had used him and not Ray Wilson back in the late 1990'ies. He would've been much more appropriate, voice- and age-wise. Still, Phil's drumming cannot be substituted, of course.
I liked that record, to be sure. But why the hell did they suddenly change their name to "Mike & The Mechanics + Paul Carrack"? It doesn't make any sense. Carrack has been with all along.
The one with the rabbit and magician is for the shorter version (radio edit) of this song. I have the CD/DVD release of the album Rewired, and the DVD has both videos on there.
Such scintillatingly ingenious musicians, these blokes. Love how they blend little surreptitious, polyphonic textures to highlight the song's minor aura.
Sounds like it relies heavily on Pentatonics, but I sense an harmonic minor in it, too. It's just an AMAZING song. Every time I listen to it again, I hear something I hadn't heard before.
Thank you so much for posting this gem, steppingstyle. I'm heading to Best Buy right now to order it!
This version is very nice. I dont think this available with the regular album version. I like the album version too. Carrack's voice simply fits any background music.
