Having talked to Stephen Moffat this weekend, the casting procedure is to look at the audition tapes of a number of possible actors who have a degree of relevant acting experience behind them. Then reviewing them and calling them in for audition. He didn't mention youtube, so I'd suggest completing some acting training then moving London for theatre work.

@HaleyOfAwesome On 15 June 2011, BBC One controller Danny Cohen stated there will not be a full series in 2012, but that some of the episodes will air in 2013 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the show.

@salllla Researched this. It appears that they are not making a full series in 2012 because Steven Moffat is also writing Sherlock as well, but it doesn't sound like this is by any means the end of the show.
