I was at this rehearsal and yes most of the principal players are gone. I heard that whenever there is a solo violinist performing a concerto that he does not play. I don't know why. But, that rehearsal was amazing, Gil is soo funny when he plays I love the faces that he makes, and Dudamel's hair is awesome! lol
How come there weren't any principals there? I mean ... it looks like Sherry Sylar is at first oboe and either Renee Siebert or that other lady is it first flute. No Cynthia Phelps, either.
Usually only few, if any, principals join the orchestra in performing concertos. I have no clue why that is. But if you recognize members of the NY phil, next time when you go to a concert in which a concerto is featured, you are likely to find a few principals in tux, not on stage, but in the first 2 left boxes of second tier (sometimes Zarin Mehta and other officials as well). Then they return to stage during the second half of the concert, which is usually a symphony... again, dunno why...
Principals tend to take the concertos/overtures off so as to give themselves a little break. Save their chops for the major pieces on the program. Assitant principals are the relief pitchers of orchestras :)
One thing to notice is that Dudamel doesnt look once at the soloist. Shouldnt he know the piece well enough with the NY Phil to engage Shaham? Shaham stands there looking at him, but gets no regard. Dudamel was conducting for himself, by his ears, not accompanying the violinist. I do think Dudamel is wonderful. But perhaps he needs more study time and fewer gigs.
Gigs are concerts. Engagements. Sorry for not being clear. I am a huge fan of his, and I want him to be successful. Not to burn out. Not to be a victim to this industry. They love him now, but when the next wunderkind comes along, Gustavo is part of the industry, no longer the fresh face. Im sure he knows more repertoire than most young conductors because of his orchestra. But these big orchestras dont rehearse with the same passion as a youth orchestra. I hope he will survive it all.
well your subjective opinion is far away from what the best critics in the world believe, Dudamel is a wonderful conductor and you are nobody to say that he needs more study and fewer "gigs", I don't know what you meant by that...
If you believe the critics when they write good then do you believe it when they also write bad? Best critics in the world dont know any more than you or I. As for gigs, if he does 50+ concerts/year (which he is), working every week, and living on airplanes/hotels, hell soon have back pain and exhaustion. And his wife will suffer too. The LA Philharmonic will be his best proving ground as it has for so many other young conductors who went on to being the best today: Salonnen, Mehta, etc..

Opps, I forgot to say that Dicterow (the concertmaster) does not play when there is a solo violinist.

Well, on the performance of Sibelius' Violin Concerto by the NY Phil on here, Judith LeClair is on principal bassoon. So ... ya.
ThaSchwab 3 years ago
I wondered about that too. Is that just a NYP thing? I haven't noticed it w the orchs I go see or others..
gab1279 2 years ago
@mtu0905 Usually, they do it because performing two large works is very tiring, especially having to do it four nights a week.

I didn't get a ticket either, this is the open rehearsal
Well, i don't have the entire concerto of course...
like you said, i really wasn't supposed to record anything, but i always do that on occasions.
But i do have another longer clip of them rehearsing on this concerto.
The file was too large and i was too lazy to reformat it, but maybe i will do it soon
and sorry, i regret that i didn't record any of the prokofiev fifth...
mtu0905 4 years ago
I WAS PRAYING someone recorded some of this>?
Thank god for you
'I couldn't get a ticket
