  • ammm .. Peter pan is Girl? D:

  • @RLStine001 Yeah, since J.M Barrie wrote this play it's been a tradition for Peter to be played by a girl

  • like this if you used to do the shadow puppets when you were little

  • Through out history Peter Pan has been potrayed by a girl. It is a shame how the newer generations need to see peter pan as a boy. The girls do a excellent epic Pan. The only other Panman that I like was played by Robin Williams in Hook. Even still it would have been nice to forever let girls have the experience of playing Peter Pan. All other males suck as Peter. It's time we get back to the girls has Pan!

  • If you birth a boy don't show him movies like this or he'll grow up to be like me. I've been with my bf for 5 years. Nature vs. Nurture? - bah-hahahaha!

  • i thought peter is a BOYS name

  • I don't like this version....I grew up on the 1956 version so this is a shock to see Peter played as a girl and have Tink just a light.....o.O

  • Why is he a girl?!?!?!?!?

  • been a long time since ive seen this. my favorite

  • Cathy Rigby is better

  • I remember having this on VHS as well. Although I was really glad when i sold it at garage sale even when i was young. I never did like this version much, i didn't like how old it seemed and i remember fast forwarding through a lot of it (espeically the shadow puppets part)

Personally, I think the Cathy Rigby version is much better, but to each his own. :)

  • This was the first Peter Pan I ever saw and boy was I confused! But I still love it, none the less.

  • This is the version of Peter Pan I grew up with. My parents taped this for me when I was a very little kid from tv in the lat 80's. I never knew until now that is was originally preformed in 1960. It was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I watched it so many times I can't even count. I love it.

  • @FrozenUSA One last thing I forgot. In the description it says that it was very limited in its showing and long out of print. I still have the tape my parents made for me. I guess it must but worth something since its rare :)

  • i like the one with cathy rigby better

  • ugh love this version! my sister and i seem to be the only ones our age who have even heard of it though!

  • Mary Martin was a great actress, but what I don't understand, is why is a woman playing a male character??? I mean I think its great for actors to play characters that are other than they are, but, Peter is clearly a male character.

  • @maleficentdiva Peter has always traditionally been played by a woman because the part has so many lines and little boys cannot necessarily be relied on to get all of the lines, cues, songs, and acting right consistently enough for the stage. In movies, they can do another take. In a play, they instead get a woman to play the part since, from the audience, the effect would be almost the same, just like the part of Wendy being played by an adult.

  • When I was a little kid I thought the part at 6:20 with the shadow was the coolest thing ever...

  • Also, why don't the Darling children have English/British accents?

  • I think it's fine for Peter to be played by a female, as long as she has a toughness and 'little boy' quality to her. Cathy Rigby, for example has these qualities. However, Mary Martin is too feminine and girl-like to be convincing as a young boy.

  • @katesingactdance Maude Adams, the great British actress, first played the role of Peter Pan in 1905. Thereafter, the role was always played by a female. Mary Martin was a huge Broadway star. She played Maria von Trapp in the Sound of Music on Broadway. I think she was wonderful in the role of Peter Pan. I remember when I was a kid, listening to Peter asking everyone to clap for Tinkerbell to live. I

  • @lucycatism Yes, Mary Martin was a fine actress. I just find Rigby to be more convincing with the character.

  • @katesingactdance

Rigby is indeed more like a real little English ruffian, but Martin sweeps me away with her energy and voice. I only watched the beginning of the Rigby, but the the staging of "I Gotta Crow" for Rigby (acrobatics during the song rather than having dance break) diminishes the lyric and robs the singer/actress of the chance to sing and act, and ultimately destroys the song. By having her lip sync while jumping around all sense of "live" theater is destroyed.

  • Oh my god Peter is a boy

  • So a boy shows up in your room in the middle of the night and all youre worried about is why he's crying?

  • @rosesandhandgrenades Oh to be young :-)

  • I remember the shadow puppets when I was little!! I was so fascinated with that scene. This entire play contained such simple and basic concepts which makes it a timeless classic! So many movies that are made today are complicated, crowded with effects and too much talking - like putting ketchup on filet mignon.

  • Wendy's voice, from this scene especially, reminds me of Alice from the cartoon Alice in Wonderland...

  • peter is gender confused.....

  • I've never seen this version before. The one I grew up with was Disney's Peter Pan, so for me it's a bit weird seeing Peter as a girl because when I think of Peter Pan I think of Bobby Driscoll.

  • I was so confused as to why peter pan was a woman!

  • @1985catlover Peter had to be played by a girl in the plays because girls are lighter and easier to be "flown" around the room by cord.

  • @Islanzadi381 also, girls usually still play peter pan because the songs were written in a girl's key.

  • HAHAHAHA OMFG i remember this film as a kid!

  • wow Peter Pan is a butch lesbian

  • Proud to be born in 2000...

  • @willrothfuss I was born in 84 too

    TheMatt198427

  • Why is Peter Pan a Petrisha Pan?

  • LOL I can't watch this anymore without thinking 'YURI!' hurray for lesbians!!

  • you have no idea how happy you've made my inner child. more than a decade after i last saw this and i still love it :)

  • @afriendofbean that's because the role of Peter pan was traditionally played by a woman a young boy

  • @AirallialeFay Thank you. I actually didn't know about that.

  • Yay! I have this on vhs!!! Thank you!!!

  • I can't believe that this classic has been uploaded to YouTube. Thank you so much. I cried.

  • Mary Martin did great playing as Peter Pan but, (I'm sorry if I'm sounding rude) why did the director of this Peter Pan play have a girl playing as Peter Pan? I wonder if it was because out of all the people who auditioned for the role as Peter Pan (Mary Martin the only girl), Mary Martin probably was the best one acting as Peter Pan. Or, I wonder maybe if it was because, the director needed a girl's voice singing which happened on Part 9 of this video which is why Peter Pan was a girl here.

  • it's funny how Mary Martin says "I'll stick you on with soap" in this one. It makes me laugh every time.

  • Anyone else think that Wendy is slightly annoying

  • @VioletChocolateShark

i do! I think almost every Wendy i see is annoying.

  • @AnimeGirl665

LOL.....yeah I don't know what it is about them but their way too perky and happy. Make one of the lost boys die then we'll see how perky she is.

  • @VioletChocolateShark

lol wow i liek the lost boys tho

  • @AnimeGirl665

lol yeah....me too lol. I still dont understand why Peter likes her above every one else. I cant stand her. She's such a goodie too-shoes. Ug.

  • @VioletChocolateShark

she will be a mother and tell them stories.

  • @AnimeGirl665

    Touche.....lol

  • @VioletChocolateShark

not touche just saying why he likes her i think

  • @AnimeGirl665

yeah I guess he likes that type of girl lol

  • Maybe it's just me but if some random kid was in my room, I wouldn't ask why he was crying. I'd scream and tell that freak to gtfo of my house!

  • When Peter Pan first came in I seriously thought he was a girl. No joke, his voice was weird, too.

  • @101rocketmail he is a girl. Peter was usually played by a girl in older plays.

  • This was the one I grew up with!! Musical wise I mean. LOL

  • i like peter played by a woman, tbh. Child actors can be really snotty, and a man would seem too old and developed for the part. plus disney sexes the whole thing up when its not about that. I mean... tinkerbell goes from being a light, indistinct fairy figure to a very sexualized little vixen whch is NOT necessary in a film for kids

  • This show was the best. I used to watch my recorded copy everyday with my sister. We just loved it so much.

  • O.O all i have to say is....WTF!! =_= this is stupied

  • is peter pan gay or is he a girl

  • is tinker bell a flash light

  • this was one of my favorite movies when i was like 2 and up to at least 7

  • I Love this!!

I use to watch it everyday when I was little :)

  • 2:01 the hell?

  • i hate how peter pan doesn't crow after he says "I got to crow." Isn't he supost to crow after he says that, im mean the whole song is about crowing when u feel the need to crow. It just doesn't make sense to me at all.

  • man the brothers have a very deep sleep hello everyone would awaken by such a loud singing but they ar sleeping on an on

  • @EngelsdaemonMaya I laughed when in the original book Peter kicks John out of bed and he falls on the floor and STILL doesn't wake up!

  • It always confused me as a child as to why Peter Pan was played by a woman. And I love the fact that at 00:45, when Mary comes flying in and lands, you can see that she has two shadows.

  • @FamGuyFreak100 As a child I KNEW she was played by a woman, and I knew Peter's a boy, but I never thought anything of it, I loved Mary martin in it, and it's funny because as a kid I didn't know who Mary Martin was, and I thought it was Lucille Ball playing her, LOL! But I kind of always associated Peter Pan as being a girl, so when I heard the boy in the Disney version I was immediately turned off from it.

  • i used to watch this when i was a little kid!

  • Peter pans a girl? NO! BAD ACTORS :L

  • I use to watch this all the time when I was little my mom was born the yr it came out and she found it and bought it for my brother and i when we were little!!!

  • PETER PAN HAS ALWAYS BEEN PLAYED BY A WOMAN in plays/live-action until Peter Pan (2003 film). The reasons for this are stated at wikipedia. Look up "peter pan" then scroll to "appearance"

  • @Melicioel7 But Peter is a boy

  • This is like, the real Ember island Players. The male lead is, for some reason, played by a woman, the female lead is trying to hard, and the acting's not the best...And through it all, it has a sort of charm to it.

  • It is a play or a movie ? and wich year ?(if you know)

  • what a graceful entrance for Mary Martin...like a ballerina.

  • How are the boys sleeping through all of Peter's yelling and singing? Lol. I used to love watching this back in the 80s and I didn't even realize it was from the 60s.

  • Even as a little kid, I was under the impression that Peter was played by woman here.

  • omg Peter Pan is like 50 . . .

    and a Woman?

  • My mom used to watch this with me on VHS when I was a kid, memories

  • I swear the name peter are for " BOYS " not for " GIRLS ". What a disappointment to play " Peter Pan " as a girl...

  • I don't really know why but I really hate it when peter's played by a girl.. :(

  • @AnimeAmy1110 because you're sexist...?

  • It's Funny How Many People Didn't Know That Peter Pan Was Played My A Girl! When Walt Saw This Play/Musical In His Childhood Days, Peter Pan Was Also Played By A Girl.

  • why is peter pan a girl?

  • oooh, it's in color!!! we only had a b&w in 1960...

  • @willrothfuss While I can't deny the impact may have been greater in the 60's, I grew up in the 90's and I still have indelible memories of it myself. It's fairly unique and well done no matter what the year.

  • its like you want to say evry one knws you can't stick something on with sope

  • This version was seriously my childhood. Thank you so much for uploading it! Mary Martin was so brilliant as Peter, and all the music and dances were so well done.

  • Comment removed

  • @purplefluffyunicorn I was just thinking Peter had some great legs and butt! LOL

  • @purplefluffyunicorn In this, Pan is played by a woman

  • I remember at 6:17 (being kids.. were observant) We had it on VHS. Sadly it is not clear enough on here. She had forgotten to wear underwear because there was a full view..

  • i had this on VHS when i was a little kid. always wondered why they had a girl play peter pan... seems a bit perverted lol

  • HOLY....CRAP....I am so glad this is on here, and other people have seen it! This movie was THE movie of my childhood....and no one ever knows what I'm talking about when I tell them about the version of Peter Pan where a chick plays Peter :-D

  • @1990BrittBritt Well This was THE movie of my childhood too :) I've been wanting to see this for many years and never found it... I can finally show it to my kids & NOW I GET TO WATCH IT YAY! Lol :P

  • is this better than the real life version of hook? that was the first peter pan movie i ever saw and i thought it was awesome. Never knew this was the original

  • This movie is why I still own a VHS player

  • MJ was supposed to play Peter Pan. Would have been awesome.

  • I agree with you willrothfuss! My dad used to "fly" my little sister and me around our living room when the show was over. It was a very sad day when he could no longer pick us up to do that. My Never Never Land ended then but the memory of those days--the anticipation that "Peter Pan is on tonight!", Mom turning on the black & white tv to 'warm up," and the excitement of the scene where Peter Pan flies into the Darling's nursery will stay with me forever.

  • Peter pan was always played by a women

  • Amen I love mary martin as peter pan.

  • @JohannaGotTalent41 A GIRL PLAYED HIM?!?!?!?!?!?! THAT'S SICKENING!!!!!!!!!

  • @XxAmyDeviliciousxX It's tradition in the theater for a woman to play the part of Peter Pan, because a young boy could not handle the massive amount of dialogue and have the required range for the vocal parts.

  • wtf? peter pan is a woman? christ that would have been screwed if it was the movie verison where Wendy falls in love with peter :/

  • Wow this sucks

  • Btw; I can see Peter's Shadow... :P

  • Is Peter Pan a girl?

    Call me stupid,but... :P

  • My little man ;)

  • "No one must ever touch me!"

    "Why not?"

    "...I don't know."

    lmao!

  • @LizaKimoto where was that scene??

  • i used to watch this every single week when i was little. along with annie. recorded on vhs. love love love it!!!!!!

  • I was born in 1994 and I have always loved this version of Peter Pan.

My grandma had it on vhs.

  • I grew up watching this my sister in the mid 90s. It was my dad who thought it was so important to watch this musical version. I didn't even know there was a disney version until I was about 13!! So I just wanted to say that for a child you can't even tell what era something is from, and I think it can give you just as much pleasure watching something even when are a billion other things to watch.

    I just love this film!!

  • Hes climbing in yo window snatching yo wendy up so better hide your kids, hide your wife and hide wendy cause hes snatching everybody out there

  • @Pelea10000 XD Brilliant.

  • @Pelea10000 who...mj?

  • @1080portal say what?!

  • @XxAmyDeviliciousxX pelea said theres a guy climbing thru windows stealing kids and i said.......who michael jackson :D hahahahahahha

  • @1080portal well, i know that.

  • @Pelea10000 lmao 1000

  • @Pelea10000 HELL YEA!

  • 2:54 you are not permitted to touch!

  • @BeckahBizarre

Don't be ridiculous, they could have easily got a eunuch to play the part! You feminist swine!

  • From the beginning Peter was played by a woman. The downfall was when that kid Jeremy played Peter. That was a ridiculously horrible movie. Disgraceful.

  • I don't think anyone under a certain age can understand how much pleasure this brought to us back in 1960.

There were only 3 TV channels then, no way to record anything, and most people had never been to a Broadway show. To have this wonderful production come in our homes was truly remarkable and left indelible memories on all of us. When it was rebroadcast for a few years, the entire family gathered around the set every year to watch it. Of course it's dated, but that adds to it's charm.

  • @willrothfuss its felt like true christmas when i think of peter pan

  • @willrothfuss dude, that comment just made it even crapper

  • @willrothfuss I may not understand the full pleasure of this in that way, being only 20, but this is still one of my favorite movies ever. It's so full of life and energy! That's why I like theater so much, you seem to get more personal energy out of people than in film.

  • @willrothfuss I agree. I was born in 1984 but this is the Peter Pan that I grew up on. It's wonderful. I remember this like I do a lot of movies I watched as a child.

  • @willrothfuss I'm only 18 and I have thoroughly enjoyed and cherished this film my entire life. One of my fondest memories is watching this as a child, and walking around everywhere with my chest poked out, crowing. proudly. :]

  • OMG My childhood. i love this movie.

  • FINALLY THIS MOVIE WAS UPLOADED :) :) THANK YOU@@

  • peter pan's...a chick. i like the 2003 film better

  • This is the version I always watched as a kid. I don't think I've seen the full disney animated one through.

  • @gcincubus Me too! haS TO BE THE BEST THOUGH!

  • Mary Martin is Peter Pan - I fell in love with her Peter Pan in 1960 when I was 5 years old and my daughter did the samein 1993 when she was 5 years old - maybe someday I will have grandchildren who will do the same - Thank you Ms. Martin, your spirit lives on - in Peter Pan and many other wonderful performances!

  • Mary Martin was a good actress, but they shouldn't have given her the role of Peter Pan. Even at a young age, I could tell that this was a woman.

  • @bxjam85 Acrually this musical was written specifically for Mary Martin. Edwin Lester of the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera commissioned Mark Charlap to create the show for her. It then moved to Broadway and of course to this TV version.

  • @bxjam85 In every performance of Peter Pan, Peter was performed by a woman until Walt Disneys animated classic Peter Pan released in 1953, when the voice of Peter was done by Bobby Driscoll. It was stage tradition.

  • LOOOOOOOOOOOL. This is probably one of the, well, believe it or not,One of the best movies i've seen,Though i lol'd when i saw that peter pan was a gurl. <_<

  • Who would ever dislike this?! BEST PETER PAN EVER!

  • is this the first movie that they use tinkerbell?

  • I think the actress playing Peter is doing a good job in spite of the fact she's a girl playing a boy. Wendy, on the other hand, is awful - that seems to be the real problem here

  • @broadwaybaby1594 ya i know wendy is terrible..the actress who played her actually died this yr..but her voice is so annoying in this

  • Women to me will always be unconvincing as Peter Pan, and I don't mean that as anything insulting or misogynist or anti-feminist. They're GOOD actors.

But for years, directors have stuck with the mindset that somehow a woman is better at playing a boy than an actual boy. I understand it started with restrictions of minors & the intense aspects required for the role, but a male is just as capable if you find the right guy.

The 2003 film version with Jeremy Sumpter will always be my favorite.

  • @PeteyPoison when i was a child which is i'm guessing the audience this movie is after i thought that peter pan was a boy. it never once dawned on me that it was a girl playing a boy.

  • This version is coming to the Lowry this Christmas, Salford Quays nr Manchester with Tom Law (Eastenders) as Peter and Brian Capron (Coronation Street) as Hook. With Comedian John Henshaw as Smee!!! 2010/2011 x

  • I'm pretty sure that's a girl.

  • When I was a young girl I watched this fabulous movie on TV and was absolutely mesmerized, especially the part when the venetian blinds open up and Peter Pan comes flying into the room.

  • no one must ever touch me!! Why? I dont know xD

  • Amazing... I wish they put this on DVD for under $300!

  • OMG I USED TO WATCH THIS!!!! ALL THE TIME!!!! AS A LITTLE KIIID!!! XD

  • I remember when I was a kid and this was on TV. My sister walked into the room and said, "he's a GIRL". One the eve of my 5th birthday I was given the original cast album and I loved it. It was my introduction into the world of musical theatre.

  • @oldschoolbrawlers My Story exactly!

  • a GIRL!!!! OMG

  • I wish Wendy was more of a heroine like in other movies in this movie/play. She was supposed to go to Neverland to escape growing up, not just for fun.

  • Comment removed

  • did anybody else wonder why peter pan is a girl???

  • @koollkid8940 Men can't play boys as well as women can, and boys grow up too fast to cast them in a play that will run for a long time.

  • @anatole69 I'm sorry?! There's plenty of younger guys out there (and yes, over 18) who have the body type & skills necessary to play the role. Whoever decided that a girl is better at playing a boy than an actual boy was gravely mistaken. I've seen productions where a young man was used, & they were just as good as the females who have played Pan over the years.

Sorry, but to me, it's very ignorant and sexist to assume something like that. Not that the girls haven't done well cuz they have.

  • @PeteyPoison eh? I was just reporting what the rational is for casting Peter as a woman, I should have made that clear.

  • @PeteyPoison Peter Pan is a 12 yer old boy. The best choice is naturally either a 12 yer old boy (can't do it for too long on stage, Puberty is a bitch) or a woman. It was WRITTEN for a woman so therefore it should be played by one. I'm almost positive that even in the first production of the normal play (which came before the book) that Peter was played by a woman. Just saying...it should stay that way. A male can't do this role like a girl can.

  • @killianlock I've known of plenty of stage productions of the show who used a male to play him, and I think it's arrogant to assume that no male can play this role. There are plenty of young men in their late teens or early 20's who are fully capable of playing Peter. Not all males' voices are that deep, not all are super-masculine, and plenty are great actors who deserve just as much a chance at the role. Men used to traditionally play women's roles onstage. Thank god we changed that, right?

  • @killianlock peter pan was always played by a woman from the start on stage and captain hook and mr darling were always played by the same actor.

  • @lilyflower58 Thanks. =) I Thought so. haha It's just right to have it done that way. haha

  • @killianlock np. its the original way. its a more recent thing that men play peter. women were easier to lift for the flying parts, and are tinier which is why it was always a women. i don't think children were usually allowed on stage back in those days, so they couldn't have used a small boy for the part. where as modern times kids can act all they want on stage. so now peter can be played by a boy/man, but back then they had to go with who was easier to lift and looks/sounds like a boy.

  • funny how u can see her real shadow off to the side. :P still love this play though.
