Naturally Susan has a bad side that we are not that interested like her neglected body, being overweight, unfit, etc. At the age of 47 not having a family or relationship is also a minus. But we admire her skills.
I think that her good voice should provide some sort of compensation for a hard life she had overcome.

This sounds like the conspiracy theory of a mentally ill person. The rising pitch and crescendo of the arrangement. I don't believe that Susan Boyle's version is the best one or even nearly the best one but people have taken a liking toward her because they have empathy for her story and because there was an element of surprise. She is very talented (as are all of these performers) and people's reaction to her are not based on some physiological "code." (it's also subjective)

As a big fan of Les Mis.. like many - i know this song inside out...
